New Pará Boots

There are boots that can be good for walking in deep wet snow, but these aren’t exactly good as hiking boots. Fortunately Hi-Tec Sports will bring out the new Pará Boot, a new pair of boots that offers “the best of standard rubber boot with the flexibility, comfort and performance of a hiker.” It features a Vibram sole and removable footbeds, along with a waterproof rubber upper, neoprene lining and a “toggle closure” to make them watertight. These weigh just a pound and a half on each foot, and at $105 they might be more than other pairs, but it is like two boots in one!

Sounds like a great boot that won’t let your feet slip or get wet!

CES 2012: Turning Water into Power

There is something to be said to turning water into wine, and a whole industry exists to do just that (with a little help from grapes and time), but Swedish fuel cell pioneers myFC has introduced the world’s first portable fuel cell charger that runs on just ordinary water. With PowerTrekk just add water and you’ll never run out power again, making this an excellent way to juice over your mobile devices when an outlet isn’t available. And best of all it something you can use when the sun isn’t shining.

Unlike solar chargers – which do need the sun – fuel cells recharge quickly, and there is no power degradation as there are typically with batteries. The result is a reusable device. Just add water!

Base Camp Gloves

Sometimes gloves can be overkill, but Italian outdoor clothing maker Camp has introduced a new medium weight base glove, the G COMP WIND, that features a durable synthetic leather palm along with Grip’R pads on the thumb and index finger. The result gives the wearer a bit more hand control. These “base” Camp gloves further feature a terry wipe strip on the thumb that can be used to clean goggles or glasses.

When the temperatures fall or conditions worsen, ripstop nylon Windmit’N covers can be pulled over to provide extra protection to the fingers, while still leaving the palm exposed. This is like two gloves in one, and best of all allows more precise finger use without the need to expose the hand in the process.

Bontrager Goes to the Races With Trek

Trek won’t be a stick in the mud, or rather stuck in the mud, but the 2012 Trek World Racing gravity squad will instead pin its hopes to get through the mud – and much more – with the Bontrager G-Mud and G4 tires it was announced last week. The world’s top-ranked downhill team will race on the newly developed models. Press Release after the jump

US Army to Deploy Smartphones

While the troops are coming home, or mostly have come home from Iraq, a large presence of U.S. soldiers still remains in the field around the world. The time in Iraq and Afghanistan no doubt made it clear to military planners as to what technology worked and more importantly what likely needed improvement.

Last week The Army Times reported “Army expects to field smartphones next year,” and this will include Army-issued handsets. According to the story these will include a secure version of the Android operating system, which will get certification from the National Security Agency. Additionally, the iPhone and iPad iOS is being considered as another option. Continue reading US Army to Deploy Smartphones

Corn on Board

Corn sometimes gets a bad rap. It is partially blamed for the downfall of the some Native American civilizations, which relied too much upon it, and more recently anything with corn syrup causes some people to run away. But corn does hold some promise, and we recently heard about the CornBoard.

The skateboards are actually made of corn stalks and husks exclusively by Stalk It Longboards! Kind of an interesting twist on what might otherwise just end up in the trash!

Hot Under the Collar and Much, Much More

With winter now actually here the temperatures outside are dropping and that means it can be hard to keep warm. But the Columbia Circuit Breaker jacket could help wearer’s get hot under the collar or just about anywhere else. This jacket uses the same Omni Heat thermal reflective technology that we reported on last week with Columbia’s Gathering Storm gloves.

Basically the technology reflects body heat back on the wearer, but the jacket goes a step further by including rechargeable battery powered heat coils. These are strategically-located at key body zones to help battle the cold, and afterward the jacket can be plugged into a standard outlet or recharged via a USB port. Out in the wilds the jacket can even light up to show others that it is doing its thing.

Of Course Nike Can Dunk!

httpv://youtu.be/7XS4GFnP53c

Expecting a Nike shoe to be able to dunk is… well, like expecting Michael Jordon to dunk. Of course it can happen and more importantly will happen. But we’re not talking about basketball this time, we’re talking about golf! The Nike Dunk, which is available now, has been weatherized and spiked. Thus it can handle a very different kind of dunk as the video above proves! Press Release after the jump

Reusable Winter Brain Bucket

Helmets are meant to protect the wearer’s head by taking the impact. However, even a minor spill can diminish the protective qualities of a helmet, and after a major crash or blow the helmet needs to be replaced. This certainly makes sense with cycling helmets, but with winter sports helmets there is an alternative.

The Pro-Tec B2 Snow instead features multiple-impact rebounding foam under the shell that can reconstitute after a crash. This allows the helmet to be used time and time again. The downside to this budget minded helmet is that it has just 15 fixed vents and no adjustment, with no audio options. But those who want a helmet to last and last, let the Pro-Tech B2 Snow be the last word in brain buckets!

Mini UV Magic Wand Makes Water Safe

Water that looks good enough to drink can still present a problem. As we noted back in October, there is a way to help make the water a little safer to think while on the go. The SteriPEN Freedom is a handy gadget that can be used to “zap” water and make it safe by killing bacteria or viruses. The battery-powered wand-like device emits UV light that will destroy bacteria, viruses and protozoa, and is actually just a scaled down version of what is used to treat mass quantities of water already.

A dedicated outdoors enthusiast Miles Maiden, had been studying the uses for solar power, and noted that UV technology had been used for more than 100 years. In 1997 he founded Hydro Photon Inc. and created the first SteriPEN. At $120 it isn’t cheap, until you realize how many bottles of water you might buy while traveling, and more importantly can be used when there is no convenience store in sight. We also bring it up again as it has been garnering lots of media attention this holiday season.
