Biking at night can be hazardous for riders and drivers alike, and there is no shortage of blinky lights, reflectors and even wearable attire that lights up. We’ve seen gloves with LED lights, vests that illuminate and even a wired light that can wrap around the frame. Continue reading Glo Bars Light the Night

Poler Takes You Back to Nature
While some camping gear has gone so high-tech that it might not feel like you’re actually getting back to nature, Portland’s Poler Camping Stuff brand, which launched last fall, is all about simple yet efficient. The company’s focus revolves around being “an outdoor brand that brings together surf/skate/snowboard culture and sensibilities into pragmatic gear,” and providing “simple, good looking, well designed gear.” The products offer a vintage look, such as the Napsack sleeping bag that will keep you warm at night and in the morning let you wear it while heading to the camp fire.
Cervelo P5 Makes Big Debut
While the athletes are the serious, Cervelo proved once again it is worthy of the Ironman competitions. The new P5 made its debut at the Ironman Melbourne last week and it brought several riders to excellent showings including two podium positions with Rachel Joyce (current ITU Long Course Champion) and Frederik Van Lierde (winner of the 2011 Ironman Nice and Abu Dhadi) placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The P5 also made its debut appearance in the 7km time trial stage of the Criterium International with Garmin-Barracuda’s Dave Zabriskie finishing 7th in the time trial stage.
Much More Than a Pup Tent
For those who camp alone the traditional method is to utilize a bivy, but we recently heard about the Kilo 1P from Easton Mountain Products. This is a one-person tent that weighs just 1 kilogram – or 2.2 pounds – and provides three-season shelter with just a single, sleek carbon fiber pole. It provides enough space for the equipment and more importantly provides some headspace that is usually missing in a bivy. With about 18 square feet, along with a side area for a pack this is like bringing creature comforts to the great outdoor!
EPIC Awards From Gearjunkie
The good folks at Gearjunkie have announced plans to applaud those in the outdoor industry world with a trophy that looks worthy of the honor. These include mountain axes from Black Diamond Equipment, along with some paint skills from local artist Bekah Worley. According to Gearjunkie:
For 2012, we plan to award six EPIC prizes, and this week we jumped in with two recipients, Jason Kruk of Squamish, B.C., and Hayden Kennedy of Carbondale, Colo., who in January made a history-altering and controversial ascent of Patagonia’s famous “Compressor Route” on Cerro Torre. See the full post on Kruk and Kennedy here.
Going forward, we’ll announce new EPIC Award winners every other month, including an axe hand-off to our next recipient planned live and onstage April 29th at the Midwest Adventure Expo in Minneapolis. Be there to see our presentation and ogle an EPIC axe in person. And be sure to email us and nominate anyone potentially worthy of recognition and exhibiting “epic” tendencies within your sphere.

Tapping Into Something
Hydration packs are fantastic for carrying along water or other beverages for a long bike ride, hike or run. These are easy enough to fill up from a faucet but less so on the go. Now the Source Universal Tap Adapter makes it easier to refill the reservoir through the drink tube rather than in the opening in the back. The UTA valve works with different kinds of taps and even water bottles, the latter needing a bit of gravity of course. From the wink the pressure is all you’ll need.
This allows a new way to fill up, but also gives new meaning to backwash. Continue reading Tapping Into Something

Skateboard Company Calls for Riders to Wear Brain Buckets
There was actually a time when football was played without helmets, and batters in baseball just headed to the plate with their cap. Times have changed, and football, baseball and hockey all require helmets to be worn. Cycling and many winter sports are now seeing helmets being used.
Last fall skateboard maker Freebord launched its “Wear A Helmet 4ST” campaign, and has called upon riders to wear a helmet every time they ride. This comes after Sam Trowbridge (ST), a Freebord pro team member, suffered a fatal brain injury last year while Freebording. He was not wearing a helmet. The company coped with the tragic loss of one of its own by trying to inspire preventative measures. Wear a Helmet 4ST is part of an ongoing effort to get all riders, not just freeborders, to wear a helmet.
Jet Pack
You won’t take flight with this one, but the Jet Backpack from Italy’s O-Range will let you catch some air – inside the pack! The patented Air-range inflatable padding system is designed to replace the dense foam that most backpacks provide for comfort.
The water-resistant pack features an interior valve that can be inflated, and the idea here is to make the backpack both more comfortable while providing a bit of protection as well. It is also designed to be breathable to avoid all that sweat on the back. There are plenty of internal pockets to keep electronics dry, and the company even has a solar panel version available to charge up those electronics on the go.
