Power Caster Gives Disabled Ability to Fish

We’ve seen a few new products to provide greater mobility for those in a wheelchair to get a little closer to nature, and now we’ve heard about the Power Caster, which enables those sitting in a wheelchair to regain the ability to launch a lure.

The Power Caster is operated by push buttons, and includes a joystick or even a sip & puff controller as well, to offer fairly precise control.  The device can be snapped to a wheelchair, and uses the chair’s power as well. Once the lure is launched the user can sit back and wait for the fish to bite – then the Power Caster can help reel in the big one.

Go Fish

Any GPS can help you find your way to a seafood restaurant, but the Magellan eXplorist line – 310, 510, 610 and 710 – can be loaded with the Fishing Hot Spots maps so you can get a very personal catch of the day.

Fishing Hot Spots features detailed profiles with shoreline characteristics, size, depth and contours, and submerged cover/vegetation to better prepare anglers for their fishing trip, along with lake-specific tips and techniques help the angler identify the fish species, seasonal fishing patterns and the best baits and lures to use for greatest success.

It even offers information on fishing points of interest and not so “fishy” data such as primary species and average sizes, tackle techniques and stocking practices.

The new maps are available now for $9.99 each, and will feature approximately 6,000 lakes across the U.S. The fish won’t stand a chance.

Stand Up Paddle Board

It is that time of year when the new water sport crafts are taking to the water, and a new trend seems to be stand up paddle boards. This includes the new Flow 106X SUP line from Pelican, which offers anti-slip, padded deck pad for secure footing, bottom grooves for solid tracking, four carrying handles for when it isn’t in the water, and even elastic bungree cords to allow storage “on deck.”

This craft obviously is designed for flatwater, light surf and slow moving rivers. We wouldn’t advise taking it on serious white water, but the the Flow can go with the flow and be used as a sit-on-top kayak as well – with optional conversation kit.

League of American Bicyclists Name Bicycle Friendly Communities

A lot of bicyclists are doing some climbing during their commutes, because Colorado and Montana lead the way with new gold and silver level bicycle friendly communities according to the League of American Bicyclists. The group has just named its largest round of Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC) yet.

“We aren’t surprised that this was the largest number of new and renewing applicants that we’ve ever had,” said League President Andy Clarke. “The popularity of this program is clear evidence that simple steps to make bicycling safe and comfortable pay huge dividends in civic, community and economic development.” Continue reading League of American Bicyclists Name Bicycle Friendly Communities

Bodyboard-Kayak Hybrid Spotted Down River!

We’re always on the lookout for new and innovative fitness products, and this week we heard about the Bellyak, which is essentially a hybrid of a kayak and a river body board. This hand-paddled craft can be used to head down a river head first!

Invented by husband and wife team Adam and Anna Masters, it was reportedly inspired by the duo’s desire to create a craft that could be used by anyone, even beginners. It is thus easier to exit than a traditional kayak, and offers an easier learning curve. It also puts riders in the water in a way that other craft don’t do – namely head first at water level. Currently the Masters are working on two models that could hit the rapids this summer. Video after the jump

SensoGlove Gets New Fit

Two years ago we first profiled the SensoGlove and just in time for a new season on the links Sensolutions – the maker of IT systems for sports analysis, motion and performance measurement – has introduced a new model with long batter life and increased sensitivity for more accurate pressure read.

This new version was reportedly created based on feedback from international PGA professionals. As with the original model, the SensoGlove features a small, sweat-proof 1.2-inch LED digital monitor that analyzes the pressure of the swing through highly responsive sensors placed throughout the glove. It is made from cabretta leather, and is designed to work a personal golf trainer, showing user’s the correct way to grip the club, thereby avoiding bad habits and injury. The glove can be used as a regular golf glove as well. Continue reading SensoGlove Gets New Fit

Outerwear Goes Beyond with Custom Fit Gear

Last year I ordered a jacket for outdoor wear. I looked at the measurements, and thought I’m in between sizes. I decided to err on the larger side since I knew I’d be wearing layers to keep me warm. Even with my bulkiest sweater, I swim in this jacket. Outerwear company Beyond aims to give you the perfect fit, even with online orders. The company has you fill out a form with all your measurements and custom makes the garment to fit you. That’s better than you’ll get, even in a brick-and-mortar store.

This fall Beyond will offer its Baker Jacket. The jacket is both waterproof and insulated. It has a 2.5 Layer waterproof, breathable shell using PrimaLoft ONE insulation. PrimaLoft ONE insulation is a warm, soft and packable grade of water-resistant thermal insulation.

The basic configuration of the jacket comes with a two-way zipper and large zippered hand pockets. It also comes with a hip shock cord.

In addition to the custom-fit size, certain features of the jacket are customizable. Options include a ripstop, encapsulated ripstop or waterproof and breathable fabric; pit zips to let air in; elastic or laser cut Velcro cuffs; a permanently attached hood and mesh inner hanging pocket. The custom sizing and configuration options make the Baker Jacket yours. The base price is $450.

Heatstick Boils Water

As we’ve often noted hot water in the wilderness is something that is close to priceless. We’ve seen numerous methods to heat the water in a pot or other cooking vessel, but there is another way – by heating the water from the water from inside out.

Heatstick takes the old concept of heating a rock and putting it in water, and applies it to a lightweight stick that draws on a propane and butane mix to heat up water in a singled container. It is able to turn cold water hot through the use of an aluminum Fuelstick cylinder. This can boil around two gallons of water, and the Heatsticks are available in different temperature ranges for varying conditions and uses. Video after the jump

Olympic Air to be Monitored

Air quality scanner in London

Many cities have questionable air quality, but London is one of those places where you can sometimes see the air – and that’s not going to be a good thing for the athletes in the upcoming Olympic Games. This isn’t the old London fog that is a problem, but rather the pollution.

Researchers at the University of Leicester have now released details on what could be the first of its kind instrument to measure and monitor the nitrogen dioxide emissions in a 360 degrees panorama. This technology, known as CityScan can monitor the impact of increased traffic on pollution levels. The irony it seems is that pollution will increase because of the games and that won’t be good for those competing.

At least the athletes can get a sense of how bad things are and hopefully prepare for it.

Bike Patrol Gets Serious Ride

Police officers aren’t just coffee and donuts, and many communities have put patrol officers on bicycles. While it would seem that a fast road bike would be the way to go, police officers need a tough bikes for the mean streets. At last week’s International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) Conference Safariland introduced its newest bicycle for the police. And like many dirt riders, they’ve gone to the 29-inch wheels.

Safariland has teamed with Kona USA, one of the world’s leading all-terrain bicycle manufacturers, to develop the flagship product in the line, the Safariland/Kona Patrol Bike 29er. This new bike is built from the ground up as the premium patrol bike for law enforcement and security markets, and utilizes some of the most technologically advanced components in the industry. Sleeping Bag Nightlight

When sleeping in a tent or even under the stars the only light might often be from the moon and the stars above. That can make for a good night’s sleep but can make it hard to answer nature’s call. While a flashlight can be just an arm’s length away it can’t always be so easily found in the dark – the very definition of irony.

The Snugpack Chrysalis sleeping bag makes it a little easier to get out of the bag and find that portable light, as it offers a built-in LED light as well. It rests in a small pouch at the head of the bag, and is thus readily available! A night light for a sleeping bag! Continue reading Sleeping Bag Nightlight
