Knife Light

Sometimes a little light can go a long way, such as not cutting yourself when using a knife in the dark. For those times when you’re hiking, camping or just need to cut something and don’t have access to a light – and don’t want to hold a flashlight in your mouth – the SOG Blade Light, a folding knife, will come in handy.

It employs six LED lights molded into the GRN handle, which are powered by two AAA batteries, and can provide 34-37 lumens. It can also stand up to nature as it is IPX-7 rated for full immersion in water. The Blade Light will be available next month for $85, which is far less than the cost of stitches on the hand! httpv://youtu.be/zFZSW_aTzVc

Anyone who goes cycling probably has a similar story to share about a “car that came way too close.” Advocacy group People for Bikes talked to five professional riders, including Lucas Euser, Team Spider Tech; Craig Lewis, Team Champion System; Kristen Peterson, Professional Triathlete; Timmy Duggan, Liquigas-Cannondale, current U.S. Road Race Champion; and
Mike Friedman, Optum Kelly Benefit who shared their stories.

We just wish the stories they shared didn’t all include such close calls!

Hands Free Bottle Glove That is Still in Hands Reach

When is something “hands free” if it is still within hands reach, and actually worn a bit like a glove? This is the first question that comes to mind with the Salomon Sense Hydro S-Lab set, which are sort of like gloves with a water bottle attached. Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

September means the end of summer, and with the coming of fall, it is a time when kids are headed back to school and starting up old routines like classes, homework, and hopefully some involvement in teams, sports and activities with friends. September is also Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.

To help encourage activity, there’s plenty of ways to use technology to get kids excited.

There are activity monitors that turn walking and other movement into a game. Technology is improving sporting equipment. But sometimes the best tool is the simple one, such as a ball or a jump rope.

Knife Time: Swiss Army and Helle Blades Arrive

Whether out hiking, camping, hunting or just spending a day in nature it isn’t a bad idea to have a good blade. This week we actually saw two!

First up is the L.L. Bean 100th Anniversary Swiss Army Knife, which likely is rugged enough to survive until the company’s bicentennial in 2112! It was made in partnership with Swiss Army Knife maker Wenger with reclaimed walnut wood that makes each model truly unique. In addition to the blade this knife offers a bottle opener, wire bender, nail file, nail cleaner, corkscrew, can opener, Philips screwdriver, mini-key ring and awl. Video after the jump

Garmin Run Time

There are sports watches that do everything – and more. But for those who just pound the pavement while running Garmin has you covered with the GPS-enabled Forerunner 10. It is designed to provide runners with the most essential data, including how far you ran and how fast you ran it, but it can also keep track of personal bests and records so you can know if you’re improving. Other features include a virtual pacer to allow you to compare current running speed to that of the optimum speed to meet a particular goal.

The watch doesn’t include a lot of more advanced functionality, but the $129 price point reflects this fact. It is designed – as Garmin notes – “for runners who want to simply lace up their shoes, push one button and just run.”

Simple sometimes is what wins the race. Video and press release after the jump

How Are You Fixed for Baladeo?

If you’re heading off into the wilds chances are you might not always want to eat with your hands, but don’t have space for a lot of utensils. The Baladeo Eco133 will solve that problem, as it folds up into a compact pocket knife-sized package but opens up into an individual knife and spork. This seems more ideal than eating with a bulky Swiss Army knife any day and allows for a semi-civilized attempt at eating.

In addition to the knife and spork tools provide a can opener and bottle opener, and are made of lightweight stainless steel to reduce bulk.

EuroBike: Urban Arrow Aims to Be Second Car

Many people in the Netherlands don’t own cars and rely on bicycles to get around. But even those who do own a car tend to use the bike as a “second car,” and that’s what the designers of Urban Arrow are aiming for this new cargo bike.

Bakfiets Urban Arrow is a multi-function cargo bike that includes a padded, rain-protected cargo box but as taken the concept beyond pedal power, adding an electric motor to help riders get from point A to point B. The bike was first unveiled at the 2010 Eurobike trade show and is being demonstrated at this year’s show. As the video suggests this could easily be a second car for just about anyone – the question is whether the car crowd could be swayed to become pedal pushers. Video after the jump
