Pedal Powered Coffee Cart

What lengths will people go to for a cup of coffee in the morning? Graduates from the Royal College of Art have created a street vendor tricycle called the Velopresso that not only uses pedal powers to get to the spot on the corner but also to grind the beans as the wheels turn.

The trike has no electric motor and hot water is heated in gas powered canisters but the developers are looking at other options. Inventors Amos Field Reid and Lasse Oiva created the Velopresso as a way to produce the coffee without the need for electricity – which could come in handy if that new TV show Revolution ever becomes a reality. If the world suddenly stopped working we think a lot of people would worry most about the coffee too!

Interbike 2012: Michelin’s Call of the Wild and Mud

We know what you’re thinking: “It’s 2012 can there really be innovation in mountain bike tires? Seriously!” The answer is yes, there is always innovation, always some improvement. That’s par for the course at Eurobike or Interbike.

But then we saw the Michelin Wild Mud Tire and it could be a game changer for those who ride in situations where the ground isn’t bone dry. So while they might not hear the call of the Wild Mud in drought-plagued Texas, for those where the rain falls and snows leave mud this is the tire that can cut through it like no other. High Tech Bite Aid

No one likes to be bitten by mosquitoes, but bee and hornet stings are far worse, while jellyfish stings can be quite painful. We’ve heard of various methods to ease the pain and reduce the itchiness but most still leave us scratching and in some discomfort. One solution would be to slather yourself in various bug repellants or simply avoid outdoors altogether. But there is another option.

The Therapik is a high-tech solution to an old age problem. But ironically it is a fairly simple solution too. The Therapik might look like something out of Star Trek, but it simply produces the right range of heat to neutralize the pain, itch and swelling – because the irritants in the stings and bites are in fact sensitive to heat. Just press the device’s tip against the bite or sting and the irritant will be reduced along with swelling and itching.

Interbike 2012: Eyes on Cébé Eyewear

During our annual pilgrimage down to Las Vegas for Interbike, we had a chance to stop by the Bushnell Eyewear booth to checkout their current lineup. For those of you who are not familiar with the Bushnell Eyewear name, they are the parent company of Bolle and Serengetti – two high end eyewear lines. But it wasn’t the offerings under those two names that piqued our interest, it was a third name in the booth, Cébé, which caught our eye. Continue reading Interbike 2012: Eyes on Cébé Eyewear

A Blanket Ready for Action

The army blanket is something quite notorious. When made properly in a bed a quarter should bounce of it, and yet it should keep those under it warm and toasty even during those cold winter nights. The actual “army blanket” that we know – and maybe don’t love – has been around since just after the Civil War.

The new OFS Limited Edition Military Blanket by Faribault Woolen Mills is made just like the army issue ones, but basic training, KP and angry drill sergeants are not required with this one. Woven and stitched to meet standards, it is ideal for camping or just feeling like you’re getting ready for action.

Binoculars for Boaters

If the crew members watching for icebergs on the Titanic had the Fraser-Volpe Optics Mariner binoculars 100 years ago this past April 12 those 1514 people who went to a watery grave would have instead made it to New York City, and director James Cameron would likely have had to settle for making a movie about the Hindenburg instead!

Today cruise ships have modern radar to prevent tragedy – Italian cruise ship captains excluded – but for others having a pair of binoculars is still necessary, and should be a crucial part of equipment out on open water. Fraser-Volpe, which has supplied binoculars to the military for more than 30 years knows a thing or two about optics, and now have introduced a marine grade pair that are built for sea. Motor Board

Boosted Boards is looking to roll out what it claims to be the absolutely lightest electric vehicle on the planet, which isn’t much of a surprise as it is essentially a motorized skateboard. The company claims that it can hit speeds up to 20mph, and handle grades up to 15 percent. It can run six miles on a single charge, which could make it an option for daring commuters.

And it is still a true skateboard with serious bearings and other components – which help justify the $1,200 price point. The Boosted Board is currently looking at Kickstarter campaign to raise funds and get a boost to bring this thing out. Video after the jump

Tactical Pants For More Than Just SWAT Teams

Today it might be hard to consider but blue jeans were originally just pants worn by cowboys and miners. But now it a fashion that is almost universal throughout the world. But tactical attire could give it run for its money. While this type of clothing has a military Specials Forces sort of look, it is also durable and comfortable.

And more and more it is less military looking and just more rugged looking. This includes the new 5.11 Tactical Taclite Pro pants, which are made from lightweight poly-cotton ripstop fabric complete with gusseted crotch to allow more range of motions than jeans typically provide. The pants feature pockets for magazines (not the reading type) but this is a good spot for a mobile phone, while cargo pockets ensure you can take just about anything you might need on a hike.
