Dieters in Japan looking to add fiber to their diets don’t have to give up Pepsi. The soda bottler is marketing a drink with dextrin to Pepsi Special, and marketing it as a “fat blocking soda.” The Atlantic looked into the new drink and other companies doing the same thing including Kirin, a beer company that recently released Mets Cola, which also contains dextrin. Endomondo App Tracks Hydration
Apps can track calories burned, distance, speed, and really help users stay motivated. But what most apps can do is to keep the user hydrated as well. The harder someone pushes the more they’ll sweat and the more they may need to hydrate.
Now Endomondo, the app-based social fitness developer, and Powerade have partnered to add a hydration function within the app. The collaboration was announced last week, and will include hydration meter aids to remind users to drink up as well! Press release after the jump
CLIF SHOT BLOKS Adds Chocolate to the Chew
When we met with Clif Bar at Interbike they were very excited to talk about the new flavor, Chocolate Cherry, in their CLIF SHOT Bloks energy chew line. Clif Bar just released the flavor in stores. The reason they were excited about the Chocolate Cherry flavor? It’s difficult to put real chocolate in a chew. It takes a balance to get the chew to be, well, chewy. Continue reading CLIF SHOT BLOKS Adds Chocolate to the Chew
Pour Cold Water on Your Workout
It’s necessary to drink water during workouts. But new research shows that cold water is more effective at helping exercisers keep up the momentum during workouts. Findings in two studies say that cold water helps keep core body temperature down longer, which allows athletes to push harder during workouts. Continue reading Pour Cold Water on Your Workout
Taste: Luna Fiber Vanilla Blueberry
Most of us could use more fiber in our diets. So the other morning when I needed a quick breakfast that I could grab and eat, the Luna Fiber: Vanilla Blueberry bar hit the spot. The new line of fiber bars from Luna – which is part of Clif Bar – pack extra fiber in a palatable bite. Continue reading Taste: Luna Fiber Vanilla Blueberry
Get a (Lark)Life
Everyone can use a little motivation to stay on the path and reach the goals. Sometimes that motivation can come from a life coach but now it can just as easily come from Larklife, a wearable fitness device that tracks users activities including exercise, diet and even sleep patterns. It features a vibrating alarm clock, sleep quality tracker, calorie counter, hydration tracker and of course offers fitness coaching tips.
Where this one differs from similar devices is that it syncs with an iOS app – Android app is a possibility down the road – and this can provide real-time feedback on your efforts. Continue reading Get a (Lark)Life
Review: Clif Bar Kit’s Organic Fruit + Nut Bar
I’m planning for a day that combines work writing at my computer, yard work, and hopefully a workout somewhere in there. The pressure is on, and suddenly I realized that I’m starving. In the press to get going on my day, breakfast somehow got lost. By this time I realize that I need to grab something quick, and don’t have time to put any kind of breakfast together. Interbike 2012: PocketFuel Natural ‘Concoctions’
The words ‘whole food’ are not just reserved for the name of a grocery chain, but is a term referring to food that is eaten in its purest, unprocessed form. Without ingredients like partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, or many of the chemicals that we can barely pronounce, the body can digest whole foods much easier than those containing processed ingredients. As a bonus, whole foods often taste much better than their processed counterparts and are much easier to stomach during a physical activity lasting several hours.
There are many solid, whole food type of energy bars on the market that can be carried easily in a pack or cycling jersey pocket. There are even unprocessed drink options. But when it comes to gels, there are not many choices for those wanting a compact, easy to carry, quick energy boast. While strolling the floor at Interbike this year, I was able to sample a number of different flavors of the whole food type of energy ‘gel’, PocketFuel, a 100% all natural energy product. Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
September means the end of summer, and with the coming of fall, it is a time when kids are headed back to school and starting up old routines like classes, homework, and hopefully some involvement in teams, sports and activities with friends. September is also Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.
To help encourage activity, there’s plenty of ways to use technology to get kids excited.
There are activity monitors that turn walking and other movement into a game. Technology is improving sporting equipment. But sometimes the best tool is the simple one, such as a ball or a jump rope.

Making Sports Drinks from Skratch
Cycling coach and sports scientist Dr. Allen Lim went back to the drawing board to create a new sports drink from scratch. He found that most drinks include things that weren’t helping aid performance and in some cases making riders feel ill.
So Lim crafted his own drink, utilizing all-natural ingredients, using far less sugar with more natural fruit flavoring and more electrolytes. While it was known as the “Secret Drink Mix” to riders, the Boulder-based Skratch Labs has now introduced the Hydration Mix, which is available as a powder-based formula in four different flavors – Lemons & Limes, Raspberries, Oranges, and Pineapples. The Everyday Hydration Mix is for those who might be simply dehydrated from working in the yard or just spending time in the sun, while the Exercise Hydration Mix is for those ready to go the distance.
