Gauge Hydration With Fuelstrips
We spend so much time worrying about how much electrolyte drinks, chews and other nutrition we’re consuming when we exercise, but still don’t quite know when we have the right mix. Fuelstrip is a strip that tests sweat to help athletes analyze and detect levels of fuel depletion. The strip helps figure out when you need to guzzle some more drink or down another chew or two in order to balance out your hydration and electrolyte levels. Holiday Gift Guide: Weighing the Options
Staying fit is more than just watching the weight, and the iHealth Wireless Body Analysis Scale can measure, track and share nine different characteristics of a user’s body composition. It is compatible with the iHealth mobile app, and the scale can be used online or off, while supporting up to 20 users.
It allows each user to track weight, body fat, lean mass, muscle mass, bone mass, body water, daily calorie intake, body mass index and even visceral fat rating. The scale allows those looking to get fit to set goals, view trends and even organize records.
Refuel Based on Sweat
While it is easy to just grab a handful of some sports chews and eat until you feel “full,” Fuelstrip works another way. These wearable strips actually analyze an athlete’s sweat levels during a workout, and then recommends the appropriate amount of sports nutrition to eat. The strips will change color from orange to yellow to green to blue based on the athlete’s glycogen depletion progresses. The color determines the number of Fuelchews needed to maintain energy. An orange strip requires one chew, while yellow requires two. That takes the guessing game out refueling.

Air(o) on the Wrist
Airo Health has released its AIRO, a next-generation health-monitoring device that can be worn as a sleek wristband to automatically monitor nutrition, stress, exercise and sleep. It can also analyze caloric consumption, stress patterns, daily exertion and sleep quality to help wearers obtain better overall health.
It can monitor nutrition by looking at different wavelengths of light to look into the blood stream and detect metabolites as they are released while and after a user eats; while it also measure calorie intake and determines the quality of meals consumed. From here it can provide recommendations on how to improve one’s diet.
On the stress end AIRO utilizes heart rate variability (HRV) to monitor micro-fluctuations in stress throughout the day, and can notifies users when their stress level is on the rise. It can work like other sleep monitors as well, as it looks at the autonomic nervous system to notice distinct sleep cycles; and from here can recognize when the body is in deep sleep, light sleep or REM sleep and can calculate how much of a user’s night was restorative.
As an exercise tracker the AIRO monitors daily exertion through heart rate and caloric burn, and from here it uses these metrics to detect how intense the activity has been, and even checks to see how the body has recovered from activity over the course of the following days. Video after the jump

Interbike 2013: Kids Feel the Honey Stinger
Kids are as active as you are, maybe even more. But their nutrition requirements are different. So giving them an adult-size nutrition bar might be overkill, and push them over the daily recommended calorie and fat intakes for the day. Honey Stinger is addressing this need with Kids’ versions of their popular Organic Waffles and Organic Chews. Continue reading Interbike 2013: Kids Feel the Honey Stinger
Interbike 2013: Water is Essential
At this year’s Outdoor Demo Days at the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas there was no shortage of fitness drinks on hand, but on a hot and very windy day what really stood out most to us was something quite basic. It was just good tasting water from Essentia.
The brand is the top dog in the natural channel and the fastest growing top 10 brand in grocery, and possibly for good reason! The water line was created by Ken Uptain in 1998 but unlike a lot of bottled waters doesn’t need to come from a particular source. Instead Essentia Water is a non-source-dependent water that goes back to the basics.
This is accomplished by removing the acidic ions to produce water that is 9.5 pH. The company claims that the charged ions help the water permeate the body instantly, meaning instant hydration. We certainly felt refreshed after a few hours on bikes in the desert! And we certainly liked the taste.
Interbike Outdoor Demo Day 2
Another day at the Outdoor Demos at Interbike. With temperatures in the upper 90s and wind that kicked in from all directions it wasn’t so much a day of demos as it was a day of enduring the elements! But where else can you get a cold one before noon? Continue reading Interbike Outdoor Demo Day 2
