Healthier Than a Kit Kat

KitWho doesn’t love Kit Kat? Well, it may be good tasting but it isn’t exactly good for you. However, Clif Bar & Company has something that might be almost as good: the new Kit’s Organic Fruit + Seed bars, which are made with all organic fruit and seeds. The bars were inspired by Kit Crawford, owner and co-chief visionary officer of the company, motivated by her own experiences on her family farm and in her kitchen. The bars are made with just a handful of ingredients and no added sugar.

The entire line is USDA-certified organic, gluten-free, soy free, dairy free and contains 200 calories or less; and these also contain zero grams trans fat, and do not contain partially-hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors or synthetic preservatives. The Clif Kitchen also sources ingredients that are not genetically engineered. The new line of bars are available in four flavors including Apricot Sesame Seeds, Cherry Pumpkin Seeds, Lemon Vanilla Chia Seeds and Coconut Sesame Seeds.

Break it Down

pb&cc_protein_vectorWhile you probably wouldn’t reach for a Peanut Butter Cup after a long ride, you could grab Bonk Breaker’s new protein bar – the Peanut Butter & Chocolate Chip flavored bar. This is the latest edition to its protein bar lineup, and is consistent with the company’s philosophy of baking simple, high quality, real food ingredients into great tasting bars.

“We’ve seen huge demand for our protein bar products since introducing the first two flavors, Peanut Butter & Jelly and Almond Cherry Chunk,” said Bonk Breaker co-CEO and founder Jason Winn. “For the third addition to the high protein bar family we went for a classic favorite – Peanut Butter & Chocolate Chip – and spent a year perfecting the flavor profile and ingredients. We were committed to maintaining a clean ingredient list of real food that tastes great, which differentiates the Bonk Breaker Protein line from other protein bars on the market.”

The 62 gram bar has 13 grams of protein from brown rice protein and nuts. The bars offer a 2:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein, helping to restore depleted carbohydrate glycogen stores after exercise. Like all Bonk Breaker bars, the new flavor is gluten and dairy free.

Bonk Breaker has its followers as it is the official nutrition bar of Ironman, USA Cycling and the USA Cycling Team.

CamelBak Pitches It

CamelbakCamelBak has entered the filtered-water pitcher market with the CamelBak Relay, which featured a Double Filter Technology system that filters water twice – once as the pitcher is filled and again as water is poured. CamelBak says that this means the pitcher filters water 10 times faster than the leading competitor.

The filter lasts four months with regular usage and removes 97 percent of chlorine, taste and odor. The pitcher holds 10 cups of water and fits in most refrigerator doors, while a pair of side-locking latches keeps the lid in place and ensures spill-proof pouring.

CamelBakChuteRefillable water bottles have become quite the accessory whether you’re taking one on a workout, a hike or even just a long shopping expedition. Healthy America

America's-Health-RankingsThis month the United Health Foundation and America’s Health Rankings released their annual report of America’s healthiest states rankings. The healthiest state in 2013 was Hawaii, which edged out long time leader Vermont.

There was some good news for 2013. According to the report Americans made considerable progress in their overall health in 2013. This was also the first year since 1998 that America’s obesity stats did not get worse. However, there is only so much good news in this. America’s obesity rate was about the same as last year, at 27.6 percent of the adult population — marking the first time since 1998 that America did not get worse in this key metric. It didn’t fall, but at least it didn’t go up.

Other key findings noted that among the adult population smoking rates dropped from 21.2 percent to 19.6 percent, and rates of physical inactivity dropped from 26.2 percent to 22.9 percent.
