Hang Time

Cinch-to-HangWhile book shelves and cabinets are made of wood out in nature some people try to hang things off trees using nails, screws or hooks. This might not seem like a big deal but those can actually hurt or injure the tree.

The folks at Cinch to Hang have another idea for using the trees for some storage. This system wraps around any tree less than four feet in diameter and cinches down tight, while a plastic hook allows for hanging of backpacks, wet clothes or just about any other gear you want off the ground. For the Love of the Gloves

Baseball-GloveWe recently came across two stories – both involving baseball gloves. Over in Boston 60-year old Robert Megerdichian – who spends his days converting blueprints to computer-aided designs for landlords and engineers – spends his nights and weekends repairing baseball gloves. He reportedly started when watching his adult son play baseball in a men’s league in Cambridge.

Megerdichian discovered that rather than repairing old gloves the players typically bought new ones, and he figured out how to breathe new life into the old gloves. He doesn’t actually sew but instead starts off with a good cleaning using Murphy Oil Soap, then replaces the laces and gives the glove a shoe polish treatment. The result is a glove that gets some added life.

Over in Hartford, Connecticut 62-year old David Katz doesn’t restore old gloves, he’s found success in breaking the gloves in. He’s been selling and breaking in gloves for the past 35 years. Exactly what is involved in breaking in a glove Katz won’t say, but it takes about a week.

Perhaps the two should talk about their love of the gloves!

CrossRopeSure an old clothes line can be used to “jump rope,” but the CrossRope system promises to be so much more. The CrossRope features cables tailored to specific training needs, while the system’s handles are so much more than just plastic rods. The multi-piece sets ensure that users will have the right cables – with varying weight and resistance – for the workout. This is one system that essentially hops to it! Video after the jump

Love Lace

Castle-BrookeThe Castle Brooke Paralaces are laces to love. These hand-crafted bootlaces are reportedly the toughest around, and feature a seven-strand construction with 550 pound-tested Nylon Kernmantle rope, and aglets made from polyolefin plastics. Those bind and mesh with the nylon fibers to become one with the lace. These are even available in a variety of colors including the old standby in black.

Hemp Cover

RamshackelAustralian skateboard maker has introduced a new type of grip tape alternative for its boards. Instead of the traditional tape, the company is utilizing hemp. The FGT Series woven hemp requires a special application process and takes at least two days to get it done, but it could be the last grip material you’ll ever need to apply. The results aren’t pretty – in our opinion – but it looks like it will do the trick and then some.

Rat Patrol

OKCOntario Knife Company has looked to blend fashion and functionality with its new Pink RAT II folding knife, and lets the company get in touch with its feminine side. While it might be pretty in pink this everyday carry (EDC) knife features an AUS-8 blade steel to offer a combination of toughness, edge sharpness and corrosion resistance. The razor-sharp blade measures three inches and comes in satin finish or fierce black.

The knife features a four-position clip to ensure it can be stored and easily retrieved, whether from a purse, front pocket or MOLLE gear.

The pink handle isn’t just for show, as the high visibility coloring makes it easier to spot in low light conditions, emergency situations or just finding in a pack. The handle further offers good balance along with an ergonomic design for a woman’s hand!

Tool Time

Gerber-GearGerber has just introduced a new lineup of keychain and pocket-friendly tools that include a zip blade, driver with Phillips and flat head options, a hex diver, an LED light and bottle opener, a hook knife and even a black pocket knife. We don’t expect most of these to be friendly with TSA but they could just the thing when you need to fix something and don’t have access to the tool box.

Road Rage

This new ebook Roads Were Not Built For Cars explores the history of what roads in the US and UK may have been built for instead. While we will have to check this one out and applaud the efforts to tell the story of cycling in improving roads, we do know that many of the roads in Europe were built by the Romans – some 2,000 years prior to the bicycle. Just saying. Continue reading Road Rage

Work Boot for More Than Work

The Chrome Industries 415 Urban Work Boot promises to be waterproof while offering a “sneaker-like” fit. It is really a work boot in the sense that John Travolta was really an “Urban Cowboy,” which is to say it could be used for work but is really meant to be an everyday shoe for flat pedal cycling, skateboarding and just heading to work in wet, slushy late winter/early spring weather. It is a hybrid of a shoe and boot and is ideal for those urban adventures.

Recycled Skate Decks

We’ve seen companies such as MapleXo turn used skateboards into sunglasses and iPhone cases, but apparently other companies are looking to ensure that old skate decks don’t end up in landfills. Streetwear maker Diamond Supply Co. is launching its own mini-accessory line that includes an iPhone 5 case and companion sunglass frame.

These products are made from 100 percent recycled skateboard wood, and feature the words “BRILLIANTLY CRAFTED” etched onto the frames. Brilliant and sustainable.
