Ferrari Surfboard – Big Price, Old School Materials

We noted earlier today that Lamborghini was following Ferrari and Porsche into the bicycle arena, but for Ferrari doesn’t look like he wants to be left in the dust. The company has a number of fitness products available, including in-line skates and even a skateboard, however one of the companies most unique non-automotive products might be its branded surfboard.

The 7 foot, 2 inch board is customized Ferrari 16 M Scuderia Spider graphic design, and is a limited edition with just 499 made available. This all-around board is designed for beginners, but interestingly this surfboard is fairly low-tech materials department. Made of polyurethane, with glass fiber and resin it features only carbon fiber covered it. At almost $1700 this is an expensive board, and more high-tech options – including those made of carbon fiber – are available for less money. Of course those aren’t Ferrari branded.

Wheelblades Let Users Cut Through the Snow

We’ve seen a variety of technology that allows those in a wheelchair to go off-road, but usually only on hard-packed and more importantly dry ground. Most winter conditions remain a difficult, if not impossible proposition, for those in a wheelchair. Wheelblades looks to change this.

These small yet high-quality skis can be mounted to the front wheels of a wheelchair with a simple click, and can allow for easier movement through the snow. While obviously not intended for downhill skiing, or traversing deep snow, these could still allow users greater flexibility come winter.

Helle of Norway Decides to Fold

After 80 years in business Helle of Norway has decided to fold it. The company, which has operated exclusively as a fixed-blade knife manufacturer since it was founded, isn’t closing shop but instead is looking to introduce its first folding knife. Until now, the company’s mantra was that folding knives simply never met the strict quality standards synonymous with the brand.

Quality isn’t being sacrificed however,  as the company introduces the Dokka, a folding knife that features a triple laminated stainless steel blade, which measures 3.5 inches long and has 58 Rockwell hardness. Unique to Helle of Norway the Dokka the triple laminated steel blade gives a lasting, razor-sharp edge designed to protect against corrosion and breakage but any folding knife design. The blade nestles into the curly birch handle, making it an easy knife stowaway. The Dokka is distributed in the USA and Canada by Sport Hansa.

Sheet Metal Bikes Ready to Roll

What goes around comes around, especially when it is a bicycle. While carbon fiber may be the current material for the major frame makers, some small builders are returning to good old metal – but in new and innovative ways. One such builder is Ronin Metal Masters of San Francisco – a small three man partnership that is is building frames from laser-cut or punch-cut sheet metal. Cool Point Tackles Heat on those Hot Days

Trigger Point Performance, a company that makes products that regulate and stimulate the muscular movement of the body, just created its Cooling Division with the release of Cool Point. The concept is that athletes keep cooler by reducing mental and physical stress that heat places on the body. This is done by cooling certain points with a targeted ice pack.

This ice pack is about the size of an ice cube, with a strap that wraps around the hand. By placing the ice pack on your palm the rest of your body will be cooled, or will maintain a cooler temperature while working out on hot days. The Cool Point pack was previously available, in fact we checked it out at Interbike last fall, but the new model includes a few upgrades. Those include improved gel with up to 50 percent longer cooling time, a lighter strap, dual-sided mesh for improved cooling. The new Cool Point has a more prominent logo, which has its pluses and minuses for those of us sensitive to brand advertising on products

To infiniti3D and Beyond

In urban centers bicycles are unfortunately stolen a lot. And a quality bike lock can protect the bike but only to a degree. Thieves often use tools to steal the expensive components from an unguarded bike, but now we’ve started to hear about British bike component maker Atomic22, which has introduced its infiniti3D system that utilizes a one-of-a-kind key tool that is paired with matched fasteners including bolts, wheel skewers and other parts that require tools. Poler Takes You Back to Nature

While some camping gear has gone so high-tech that it might not feel like you’re actually getting back to nature, Portland’s Poler Camping Stuff brand, which launched last fall, is all about simple yet efficient. The company’s focus revolves around being “an outdoor brand that brings together surf/skate/snowboard culture and sensibilities into pragmatic gear,” and providing “simple, good looking, well designed gear.” The products offer a vintage look, such as the Napsack sleeping bag that will keep you warm at night and in the morning let you wear it while heading to the camp fire.

PhatBlox Brings Fat Ride

Longboarders have a new way to keep control and get a little adjustability with their boards. The PhatBlox is designed to help provide a bit more support for heftier riders, while also letting them make adjustments to fine-tune the feel for a smoother ride.

The system can be used to retro-fit a board in a few minutes. Made of billeted aluminum, the blocks (PhatBlox) are just installed around the trucks using very simple hardware. A cable connects between the front and rear blocks and once tightened it flexes the board downward and allows the deck to hold more weight. For some it might be an easier fix than dropping a few pounds. Additional images after the jump

The Name is Bondi

Innovative need not be high-tech, but the right innovation can work well with our high-tech devices. And the Bondi is just such a piece of innovation; this silicone holder for the iPhone (which would probably work with other smartphones as well) is like a little protector that will hung onto the handset for dear life.

Bondi can be stretched or contorted into unique positions and could be a way to hold the phone on a bicycle – although there are probably better handset mounts for that purpose. But where Bondi really could come in handy is for those who hit the gym or regularly workout on a fitness machine. This $20 device could be a great way to securely stash the phone so it isn’t dropped or worse forgotten. Handy for the handset indeed!

Vapur Wear

There has been a big move against the one time use “throwaway” water bottle, but there are times when a reusable water bottle is a pain. It is great for carrying water, until it is empty. Then it takes up room, and for hiking and running this is space that could often be better utilized.

Vapur has its own take on this problem with the Anti Bottle, a soft-bodied bottle that can be rolled, folded and most importantly of all reused. It works like a hydration bladed but in the size and basic shape of a bottle. The new Element is built for those times when a lot of water is required, or just for those with a bigger thirst. Consider this the big gulp of foldable water bottles. It is available in 24 and 34 ounce sizes, and offers a “SuperCap” for those with big mouths or bigger thirsts.
