KineticShift Goes to Interbike 2012

To say that this week is “bike week” is surely an understatement. Today kicks off the Outdoor Demo Days in Boulder City where dozens of bicycle companies offer a chance for attendees to test the latest bikes and gear, while Wednesday is the kick off of Interbike, followed by the 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Grand Fondo on Saturdya.

Check back all week as we’ll be reporting from Las Vegas. Let the good times roll!

Interbike Made in America: Ultralite Pedals Almost Like Pedaless

We’ve heard of clipless pedals, but the Ultralite pedal system from Ultralite Sports of Colorado almost seems like they forgot the pedals. At first glance this sort of looks like the deck of a flat pedal just broke off. But actually nothing has broken off. Instead the company has created what truly promises to be the lightest clipless pedals ever made. With pedals and cleats these weigh just 112 grams. As the photo above shows it is basically just a single barrel with absolutely no “platform.” Continue reading Interbike Made in America: Ultralite Pedals Almost Like Pedaless

Kinetic(Mis)Shift: Fit Wet Seems All Wet to Us

httpv://youtu.be/Ae9Lihg6XMA

Maybe we’re missing something here with the Fit Wet? A bike jacuzzi is what this essentially is, and the makers claim that it “combines the effects of biking, water resistance, & jets to improve results 10 times faster than an average bike.” It also costs $18,000, which seems just a little high to use for such exercise equipment. It also essentially means that the water is dumped out after each ride, which seems like a huge waste as well. At least it is made in Florida!

We’ll see if we can get some answers as the company will reportedly be doing demos at the Health + Fitness Business Expo taking place in conjunction with next week’s Interbike trade show. Until then this one seems all wet!

Kinetic(Mis)Shift are products that we think deserve to be called out for missing the mark in health related products.

Interbike: Cardo Systems BK-1 Demos in the Desert

We first heard about Cardo Systems and their BK-1 helmet-mounted communications and entertainment system for cyclists back in March. The system lets cyclists – or anyone – communicate via Bluetooth for up to a 1,600 foot range. That means those conversations on the road can happen even when cyclists are single-file, or not one right behind the other. Continue reading Interbike: Cardo Systems BK-1 Demos in the Desert

Interbike 2012: Triathlon Pavilion and Urban Yard Added to Show

Next week’s Interbike trade show will see the addition of two additional communities including a new Triathlon Pavilion, which is there to embrace the spirit of the sport. It is hosted by Triathlon Business International and will feature tri-specific educational seminars, including two sessions by Kristen Carroll, Active.com’s VP of Corporate Communications.

The show will also feature the return of the Urban Yard for a second year, where retailers and attendees can take in urban bike products, while also having access to free Wi-Fi. Continue reading Interbike 2012: Triathlon Pavilion and Urban Yard Added to Show

Interbike 2012 Preview: Kinomap Trainer Apps Up

Kinomap Trainer has just announced a major update of its app, which key features including new equipment configuration page, search by location on a map, new Facebook connectivity and even Apple TV/HDMI display mode within the map.

We first heard about Kinomap back in January at the Consumer Electronics Show, and this cycling and running training app lets you hit the road from the gym or living room offering, while sharing of routes with users remains key. We’re looking forward to seeing Kinomap in action at Interbike in two weeks. Video after the jump

Interbike Preview: POC Enters Road With Time Trial Helmet

We first got a glimpse of the POC Tempor helmet at the Olympics earlier this summer, and now the helmet’s designers have announced that it will make its American debut at next month’s Interbike trade show. Since we haven’t seen it up close we can’t comment on many of the details, but POC Sports noted that “the helmet provides the highest possible safety thanks to the appropriate thickness of the liner at exposed areas around the helmet. The ventilation system is optimized with regard to impact absorption without neglecting air flow and aerodynamics. In addition, the fluorescent color increases visibility. The Tempor helmet has overlapping upper and lower shells and includes a detachable visor.”

Hopefully we’ll get to try it on for size in Vegas.

Interbike: WD-40 Introduces BIKE Line

For years many shop mechanics have said to keep WD-40 away from the bikes. While WD-40 is good for solving a squeaky hinge or for helping loosen a rusty nut, the lubricant wasn’t really meant for a bicycle chain. But now WD-40 has announced the launch a new subsidiary business unit that is focused exclusively on cycling-specific maintenance products.

WD-40 BIKE will offer a range of products designed for bikes including wet and dry chain lubricants, a heavy-duty degreaser, a foaming bike wash and a frame protectant. These products were developed over a year with collaboration between the team at WD-40, professional bike mechanics and independent bike retailers. Surly Chews the Fat Tire Bike

Last year at Interbike we were able to try out some of Surly’s new snowbikes including the Pugsley and the Moonlander. These bikes of course don’t have to stay in the garage until the white stuff falls, and they work well in sand and mud as well.

But now Surly is coming out with a fat-bike that is meant for the trail as well. The Krampus is a fat tire mountain bike that offers three-inch wide tires but is actually a 29er that can handle singletrack at speed. Unlike the Pugsley, which requires special hubs, cranks, rims and other parts, the Krampus is compatible with most mountain bike parts. Continue reading Surly Chews the Fat Tire Bike

Trek CEO to Offer Keynote at Interbike

We know where we’ll be on the morning of September 19. We’ll be in Las Vegas at the Interbike Trade Show, and more specifically we’ll be at the Industry Breakfast, presented by Bikes Belong and NBDA. For this year’s inaugural industry breakfast John Burke, CEO of Trek Bicycle Corporation will be on hand to deliver the keynote address.

Burke’s keynote presentation is expected to address a clear plan to get the U.S. bicycle business from $6B to $10B a year by 2020, and what the industry needs to do to make it happen. He plans to describe the crucial role that the industry—retailers and suppliers–must play to create an effective movement that links bike businesses and consumers to shape a cycling-friendly future. This call-to-action presents the pathway to doubling the size of the U.S. bike industry and dramatically increasing IBD sales. Continue reading Trek CEO to Offer Keynote at Interbike

Interbike Preview: Shoe Maker Has Your Head Covered

Cycling shoe maker Vittoria has for three decades managed to provide some very stylish footwear for riders and for 2013 the company will have rider’s heads covered as well. The company is jumping into the helmet market for 2013 with five models, ranging from $70 to $250 – with the latter being the top end V700.

This features a co-molded design with structural carbon fiber and rear dial closure. With 25 vents riders will likely not get too hot headed either. The helmets will be on hands at next month’s Interbike in Las Vegas and we look forward to seeing them.
