Next week at the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas Oakley and Nike Max will introduce their respective lines of Transitions adaptive sunglasses that change depending on outdoor light. Interbike Preview: Day Trader
A used bike doesn’t have to mean used and abused, but determining the value of a “previously owned bicycle” can be more challenging than buying a used car. However, the Bicycle Blue Book might make things a whole lot easier – for both buyers and sellers.
This service can take a lot of guess work out the pricing for used bikes, and it can even reduce some of the risk out buying via sites such as Craigslist – by involving a third party. As the company noted, “Bicycle Blue Book is a service that takes the wild west out of the used bike market.”
The Bicycle Blue Book will be at this month’s Interbike trade show in Las Vegas.
Interbike: The Real Recovery Ride
Next month at the Interbike trade show attendees will get a chance to take part in a new 25-mile ride that is about more than just testing next year’s bicycles. The Ride 2 Recovery/Interbike Honor Ride will start at Interbike’s new home, the Mandalay Bay Convention Center (MBCC), on Tuesday, September 17th, at 8:00 a.m. Veterans, troops and all attendees of the Interbike trade show are invited to ride to the OutDoor Demo site in Boulder City, NV.
This is one ride we hope not to miss.
Enduro Challenge Coming to Interbike’s Outdoor Demo
We at KineticShift look forward to the OutDoor Demo Days during Interbike. It is our chance to test ride a variety of bikes on and off-road. This year the show organizers are looking for something a bit bigger with the Enduro Challenge to be held at Bootleg Canyon and presented by Innovative Timing Systems (ITS).
The all-new Enduro Challenge will consist of four stages covering both days of the OutDoor Demo. There will be two unique timed courses that riders can put their skills and the latest bikes to test on over the two days. Awards will be presented both days to the top three finishers for both men and women, with three grand prizes awarded on Tuesday afternoon to the combined two day winners. The overall winner is the rider (male and female) who accumulates the lowest combined time from the four timed sections. Participation in the event is free of charge to all attendees. Riders can take practice runs, but only one official time will count towards the prizes.
The Endure Challenge, will take place on both Monday and Tuesday, with winners to be crowned both day, and is open to all Interbike & OutDoor Demo attendees.

Gran Fondo Riders Can Hit Interbike
Over the years we’ve heard many our cycling friends comment that they’d love to attend Interbike, which of course is a trade show and not generally open to the public. However, this September there might be a way for the public to partake in some of what Interbike has to offer.
Participants in this year’s RTC Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo, held in Las Vegas the day after Interbike closes, will be allowed in to the show for part of its final day.
“We view the Viva Bike Vegas event as the ultimate culmination of a week-long celebration of cycling,” said Pat Hus, Interbike’s managing director. “The RTC has done such a great job with this event and it has been growing nicely year after year for the last six years. The participation numbers are significant and now with the event taking place on the Saturday after the show, it just makes sense to invite this group to Interbike. The Gran Fondo customer is a passionate cycling enthusiast and exactly who we want in the halls.”
German Chancellor to Open Eurobike
While it is unlikely that President Obama or even de facto health czar Michelle Obama would make a visit to the Interbike trade show, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit the opening day of this year’s international Eurobike trade show at the end of Augsut.
This move comes as cycling in German has seen economic growth. Merkel will reportedly open the show and then spend time getting to “know the latest trends and innovations from the biking world.”

Interbike Goes Electric
Bob Dylan went electric so why not Interbike? The organizers of the largest bicycle trade show in North America announced this month that it will host electric bike manufacturers and journalists at an event that will showcase pedal-assist bikes.
The Electric Bike Media Event is set for February 12-13 at the Terranea Resot in Rancho Palos Verdes, and will allow companies to introduce their products and technologies to consumer media. SRAM, Prodeco, Easy Motion USA, Currie Technologies and Bikes Belong have announced that they will be attending the event.
Interbike Trade Show To Provide Limited Access to Public
This week Interbike, the largest bicycle industry trade show in North America, announced that for 2013 the show will allow select consumers to attend the event. According to the organizers the new program’s primary intent is to showcase the industry to some of its most loyal enthusiast customers.
This limited-access initiative, called Interbike by Invitation, will allow registered retailers to invite their best and most loyal customers to attend. These special invitees will be treated as special guests of that shop and will be afforded preferential treatment at the show. Interbike will not be adding a day for this initiative, and instead will be extending Friday’s hours and allowing access to both consumers and retailers on Friday, September 20, 2013. The show will now be extended to 6:00 pm on Friday instead of the previous 4:00 pm.
Made in America: Bag that Phone – Jersey Style
Most cyclists ride with their cell phone, usually stashed in the jersey pocket if it is not being used on the handlebar as a cycling computer. One ride is all it usually takes to realize that sweat builds up on the phone and regardless of the chance of rain, the following ride usually sees the phone placed in a zipper closure plastic bag before being put in a jersey pocket.
This is exactly the scenario that played out when I first purchased my iPhone. Since the replacement cost of that phone can exceed $600, every following ride saw the iPhone being protected by a Ziplock bag. Over time the zipper usually stops properly sealing and the bag breaks apart. While at Interbike this year, the crew from the 2013 Amgen Tour of California was giving away JerseyBins, the vinyl zipper pouch used to protect cell phones, cash, or anything else that may need to be protected while out for a ride. This little pouch seemed like the perfect solution.
The JerseyBin is a heavyweight zipper closure pouch that is available in four different sizes. The 10-gauge vinyl is cold crack tolerant to below -10 degrees Fahrenheit, yet it allows the use of a touch screen without removing your phone from the pouch – that can be difficult to do through a normal Ziplock bag. A ‘Slick’ Chain Lube
Stroll into any bike shop looking for a chain lubricate and prepare to be inundated with numerous choices. From synthetic to ‘biodegradable’ options, picking a lube usually comes down to a recommendation from a shop mechanic or a friend who works on their own bikes. Each year at Interbike there seems to be a new lube making its debut, but is there really any need to change from what already works? This year there was one company bringing a lube to market that maybe worthy of trying something new. Slick Lube of Newark, Delaware has a product line with a laundry list of features, some of which have not appeared in any other chain lubes. Continue reading A ‘Slick’ Chain Lube
