Patagonia Offers Transparency with Supply Chain Map

Patagonia is one of those companies that’s ahead of the competitor pack. Many of the clothes and other merchandise it produces is made from recycled and sustainable materials. And now Patagonia is revealing details about where its garments and other merchandise is manufactured. The Footprint Chronicles is a Google Maps listing of the company’s supply chain including textile mills and factories. You can see how many people work at each location, what languages they speak on the job, and what merchandise, such as baselayer or accessories, is produced at each location.

Nike recently put together a sustainability site with a similar goal of providing information for customers and investors.

Heatstick Boils Water

As we’ve often noted hot water in the wilderness is something that is close to priceless. We’ve seen numerous methods to heat the water in a pot or other cooking vessel, but there is another way – by heating the water from the water from inside out.

Heatstick takes the old concept of heating a rock and putting it in water, and applies it to a lightweight stick that draws on a propane and butane mix to heat up water in a singled container. It is able to turn cold water hot through the use of an aluminum Fuelstick cylinder. This can boil around two gallons of water, and the Heatsticks are available in different temperature ranges for varying conditions and uses. Video after the jump

Shower Power

After a day hiking in the wilds a warm shower can be so welcome, but if you’re camping the best option might be a jump in the lake. There are systems that use propane and an electric pump, but those are only ideal for car camping – and aren’t the sort of thing to camp in the wilds with.

However, another option is the Helio Pressure Shower from Nemo Equipment, which takes the basic gravity shower up a notch. It uses the Nemoid Foot Pump to provide an even-pressured stream of water – ideal for getting clean but still small and easy enough to take on a trek in the woods. It offers 11 liter capacity, where the water can be heated by the sun, and provides around five to seven minutes of shower time or even dish washing. But after a long day we think a shower in the woods would be seven minutes in heaven.

Bag That Is Light As A Feather

Lightweight and highly adjustable is the promise of Osprey’s Escapist 30 Multi-Sport pack. Weighing in at just 2 pounds, 4 ounces, the bag can be fine tuned to figure back just perfectly. It is adjustable at the shoulders, back, and hips. And even if you may sweat the small details in life, while you hike your back won’t get overly wet, as a series of mesh-covered foam ridges provide passages for fresh air circulation. Shoes That Suction

Sometimes with shoes it is good to get a grip, and the OluKai Maliko shoes are certainly about getting such a grip. These feature a sticky rubber sole along with an aggressive traction pattern that also includes suction cups. But the foot print on these is unique in that these offer a double toe as well, which is designed to provide greater balance and dexterity. This is done by separating the big toe from the rest of the toes and along with the suction cups provides more traction on slick and wet terrain, but reportedly should give a grip on dry terrain as well. Much More Than a Pup Tent

For those who camp alone the traditional method is to utilize a bivy, but we recently heard about the Kilo 1P from Easton Mountain Products. This is a one-person tent that weighs just 1 kilogram – or 2.2 pounds – and provides three-season shelter with just a single, sleek carbon fiber pole. It provides enough space for the equipment and more importantly provides some headspace that is usually missing in a bivy. With about 18 square feet, along with a side area for a pack this is like bringing creature comforts to the great outdoor!

Getting into Hot Water

There are times that “getting into hot water” is a good thing, such as when it is cold outside and you could use a warm beverage. The Jompy takes this a step further, as it provides a way for campers, backpackers and hikers to get hot water from their hydration packs, while also ensuring that the water is clean and safe to drive.

Made in America: Trumark Slingshots

Trumark Slingshots - The Bat

Preparing for an outdoor adventure means packing the right gear: water, food, bike helmet, sunscreen, and more. But how many people are prepared for the “unexpected?” A flat tire or getting turned around in the woods can mean the difference between a two hour trip, a two day survival situation, or even never returning from your adventure at all. Are you prepared to survive in the wild if the “unexpected” does occur?

“Surviving” is not just a situation reserved for the great outdoors, as people push further into the suburbs, we are more than likely to encounter bears, big cats, and other animals that would love to chow on us for dinner while roaming local trails just outside our own door. Sure, a firearm can provide the protection, but it can also land you a criminal record if you are carrying without a permit or carrying in an area that firearms are prohibited. Plus, ammunition is heavy and a firearm can become damaged in the rain. Mace can provide protection, but it cannot kill a rabbit or squirrel – for sustenance – if the situation gets that desperate.

A slingshot, in the right hands, can provide both food for survival and protection from wildlife. It won’t have the killing power of a firearm against a large animal, but it may hurt one enough to allow you and your family to escape. A modern slingshot (a.k.a. a catapult, or katapult for you European readers) is fairly lightweight, compact, and accurate; and the current models on the market are a far cry from a rubber band attached to a Y-shaped stick seen in cartoons. They have fiber optic sights, mounts for flashlights, and stabilizer weights just to name a few features. But, as we are seeing with a number of products, most slingshots are imported from China. One company has not followed that trend and is still making their product line in America. Trumark Slingshots of Boulder, Colorado has been continuously designing and manufacturing their slingshots in the U.S. since 1953. Continue reading Made in America: Trumark Slingshots

Made in America: Belle Baby Carriers

In the next few months life as we know it is going to change – this reporter and my wife are expecting a newborn, our first. The preparations and gathering of baby related products has started at our household, and as exciting as this is for us, there is a disturbing trend that we noticed in this entire industry – a majority of the products are made in China. Certainly there are products manufactured in other countries, Mexico, Vietnam and South Africa to name a few; but we have not found one baby related product that is made in the U.S.A. – until now. Belle Baby Carriers of Boulder, Colorado has been making baby carriers for those on-the-go since 2006 and they are all made in America.

The idea of carrying a baby close to a parent’s chest is not a new concept. It keeps the newborn close to the parent promoting ‘bonding’ during the first few months of development outside of the womb. For the parents, it allows the newborn to be easily carried during the first few months without the hassle of a stroller or jogger. Video after the jump

Toe Motion Flip Flops

We’ve seen a big trend in barefoot running shoes that fit the feet like a glove, and now Sazzi is taking this to a new direction with the “Toe Motion Footwear” system, which includes four toe posts (for all five toes). The company, which gets its name from the ancient pueblo dwelling of the Anasazi people, was founded by Mark Thatcher, who previously launched Deckers. This time around he’s creating footwear that is actually based on the Anasazi’s tribes traditional footwear – albeit with a modern twist.

Where the original Anasazi featured two toe posts to help make for stability over rough terrain, Sazzi takes a cue from the barefoot running style shoes. The company calls this the “quad post lateral stability system,” or QPLS, and it is meant to provide control and comfort for negotiating obstacles on land and river, while still providing a flexible open feel. Get On My Back

Earlier today we noted exercises that can damage the back, so what about carrying a child? Toddlers often like the idea of hiking – at least in the beginning, but eventually they’ll need to be carried, and it seems most end up getting a piggyback ride as well. It is might be good for the rider, but it can be a pain in the neck and back.

Brothers Wayne and Jonny Lifshitsz had another idea, namely the Piggyback Rider, which provides an easier way to carry a child on your back. Functioning much like a backpack with a shoulder-mounted foot-bar to distribute the child’s weight at your core, it enables a more natural and upright walking posture, while the child stands safely on the wide textured foot-bar and can hold onto integrated shoulder handles. This harness system won the “Best New Product” award at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market Show last year and this year will see new expansion of the line with a system that even allows for a bit of storage too.
