Outdoor Retail Show Preview: Abominable Snowshoes

Like Bigfoot the Yeti, also known as the Abominable Snowman, remains something illusive. More a myth than reality, but Louis Garneau has could allow winter trekkers to tackle the snow like a Yeti.

The company has introduced the Boa Closure System to its line of high-performance Yeti snowshoes in advance of next month’s Outdoor Demo and Outdoor Retail Show. Designed for the back country these lightweight snowshoes utilize the Contact Pro Harness System for on-the-fly adjustment and a secure fit. It might be just the thing for those who hike in search of mythical snowmen.

Surelock is a Sure Thing

The MSR SureLock TR-3 are trekking poles that will put the user in just the right position. These poles offer easy adjustment but at the same time provide a solid lock, ensuing that these are there when you need it. The SureLock three section poles provide an on-the-fly two-finger adjustment system with glove-friendly operation. The 7000 series aluminum poles are also sturdy enough for use in rugged terrain, but lightweight enough that they don’t weigh the user down. It is almost elementary SureLock! Video after the jump

Sport to Watch: Seatrekking

Here is one that we hadn’t heard of but think it could become big in 2013 – seatrekking, which has been described as a combination of swimming, snorkeling, free diving and backpacking. And yes, there are already specialty products for this fledging sport.

German-based ÁETEM is providing purpose built-gear. The company got its start as small groups of seatrekkers started to explore coastlines about seven years ago.

So what is needed for seatrekking exactly? Well, the company offers gear that can be used on land and water, where the packs can be worn on the back on land or tethered in the water. These waterproof bags even feature a pressure system to inflate when on calm water. There is even the Seashell hard-shelled carbon pack that can double as a body board. Kanguru to Carry Kids on Bike and More

Transporting the young ones can be tricky, especially for those with active lives. This is where designer Oliver Klein’s award winning Kanguru might be the one to beat. This transformable baby carrier/bike seat, which is made almost entirely of recyclable materials that can be easily replaced should any wear out or break, won a Gold BraunPrize 2012 for “Genius Design for Everyday.” The Kanguru can even stand upright on the ground, thus serving a third purpose as well. Again, genius for everyday.

Kangaroo Water Bottle Holds More Than Water

When going for a run it is good to bring along some water, and virtually any water bottle on the market can do that. But what about bringing keys, money or ID? If you like to run without stuffing the pockets that means more stuff to carry.

But the Kangaroo Water Bottle from Contigo can solve the space issue for you as this 24-ounce bottle, which is made from high-impact BPA-free plastic that is also dishwasher safe, offers a compartment that can hold some ID, a little cash and a key. It isn’t a lot of space, but simply having any room for this stuff is great. The bottle also features a carabiner clip so it can hang off a belt or backpack – just be sure the bottle doesn’t get snatched, especially if you have your ID and key inside!

Holiday Gift Idea: Trail Tray

When camping or backpacking you might often times find that there isn’t exactly the right place to set your plate, cup or other items. The typical option is the ground, but that often means waiting for a spill to happen. The Ozen Solo Table from Snow Peak solves the problem as it provides a nice flat surface so you can cook, and have a place to eat. The flat surface can make it easy to get organized as well.

Ti2 for Judgment Day

Earlier this week we noted that the Cell Machined Survival Baton would protect your important stuff while camping or hiking. If that aluminum survival baton wasn’t enough for you consider the Sentinel, another survival baton/rod. This one is made from grade 2 titanium and features loops that can be hooked to rings, clips, and lanyards. Currently the creators are looking to raise funds through a Kickstarter project, with plans to bring these out in a variety of sizes. As the Sentinel is titanium it is waterproof and corrosion resistant, and could be made in multiple sizes so these can hold cash, medicine or just about anything else you might need for judgment day! Bag That is Ready to Go

While only spies and criminals likely need to really have a “bug-out” or “go” bag, anyone can now have one – at least in the name. The Gerber Go Bag features everything you could need – a Gerber foldable knife, a rainproof notepad, Sight multitool, Recon task light, metal water bottle, frog lube clear/lubricant/preservative and pocket reference guide. All of it is stashed in the Mexpedition Mongo Versipack, which makes it perfect for hiking – or running to the border.

Hands On: Lumbar Backpack Packs it In

For a day’s hike in the woods there is still much to bring – but hardly the right bag for the job. Many large packs are overkill, and the smaller packs still mean jamming things in the pockets or worse having the hands filled!

Mountainsmith might have a solid solution with its Lumbar-Recycled Series Day TSL R. It is bigger than the usual waist-sized pack but smaller than a backpack – in other words just the right size for those who are going on a trek but not a serious adventure. We see it could come in handy on a trek during an adventure as well. Continue reading Hands On: Lumbar Backpack Packs it In

Go Back to Berkeley to Get Low Down

They say you can’t go home again, and while we don’t know what they mean or who even “they” might be, we do know that you can get Back-To-Berkeley and even do so down low, or rather Back-To-Berkley Low Down via a trip to North Face.

The outdoor retailer is offering these hiking shoes, which could allow you to walk back home or to the back woods. These feature retro looks, but include some current technology, such as waterproof suede, polyurethane coated ballistic mesh upper and inner HydroSeal waterproof membrane liner, PrimaLoft Eco insulation and Winter Grip rubber outsoles. There are also IcePick temperature-sensitive lugs. Continue reading Go Back to Berkeley to Get Low Down

Survival Knife That Could Survive Anything

A good knife is one tool you don’t want to be without when camping, hiking or hunting. The DPx Gear HEST 2.0 Survival Knife isn’t a good knife, it is probably the one knife you’d serious want when things get serious. It features a 3.15-inch Sleipnersteel blade with a resilient cutting edge, a strong re-angled pry notch, wire strippers and hex driver. It available either with a PVD coating for the stealthy look, or as a naked stone-washed blade and wood handle for that woodsman look. Either configuration offers a hollow handle for storing extra survival materials.

These Boots Were Made for Hiking

We’ve seen a lot of innovative technology in boots – heat coils, synthetic materials and all sorts of waterproofing. But sometimes you can’t mess with a good thing. And that’s why the Danner Mountain Trail Left Bank boots seem so classic. These evoke style that is often missing today.

These are constructed of Horween Russet Chomexcel Leather from Chicago’s Horween Leather Company, and are fully lined to endure a hike in the woods and so much more.

Mountainsmith Pack Worthy of a Mountain Man

If Jeremiah Johnson were around today and opted to go into the woods to become a hermit he’d probably opt for something like the just announced Mountainsmith Haze pack to carry his gear. Empty this pack weights just 1.9 pounds, but it can carry 50 liters of gear in its open main body, while the outer mesh pockets provide places for all the things a modern mountain man might need.

There are pole carriers, ice axe loops and plenty of places to tuck a mobile phone, GPS device or other gizmos. Let’s face it, just because someone opts to be a hermit doesn’t mean they want to be completely out of touch! The Haze will be available next year for those looking to get off the grid, even if it just for a week or so.
