A Little Bit Gym

BitGymIt has been a while since we heard from BitGym, a technology that can transform a typical cardio machine into an interactive experience. Now the company is looking to Kickstarter to offer ways of making workouts a bit more interesting.

The device works by using any monitor device – including tablet or mobile smartphone – that offers a front-facing camera. The software utilizes the built-in accelerometer that can sync with movement, so you can watch the screen but feel you’re a million miles away. Video after the jump

Can’t be Defied

Ultimate-Gym-BagLiving up to a name like “The Ultimate Gym Bag” might not be easy, but this bag from Defy features 500 Denier ballistic strength Cordura fabric, 1.9 ounce coated ripstop Nylon fabric and offers a 2-inch flat nylon webbing handle. It doesn’t come with lots of pockets but the camo material says it is read for adventure. This bag might be overkill for a trip to the gym but it is probably the last bag you’ll never need for sweaty socks and dirty underwear.

DI-MOVE-WAVE

DIMOVEIf that 1970s TV show Goodtimes were still on the air more people would get the headline reference, but regardless the DIMOVE WAVEpro is still something different and eye catching. It is a balance board device that offers a challenge for users just trying to stand on it. The creators say it can be used in 70 different ways, but seeing it we have to wonder if that includes draping clothes and collecting dust.

While we’re not calling this out as a (Mis)Shift we’d need to hear more about what this one has to offer before fully getting on board, or even on it! Video after the jump

Read and Run

ReadingMateEarly reading lessons for kids often consist of “see Dick run,” “see Spot run,” and of course “see Jane run.” However, actually reading while running isn’t really so easy – even on a treadmill. There are stands that can allow for placement of a book or magazine but the motion of running can make it hard to concentrate on the words.

This is where the ReadingMate comes in as this new system, which is being developed at Purdue University, utilizes a video monitor with head-tracking technology to keep onscreen text bobbing in unison with a runner’s eyes. The monitor also increased font size making it easier to see. All this should help runners stay focused on what they are reading and that could help runners put in more time on the treadmill.

Fight Right

Everlast-Protex-3Everlast products tend to live up to the name, and the Protex 3 Professional Fight Boxing Gloves might be the last boxing gloves you’ll ever need. These are competition gloves that feature four layers of C4 foam to protect wrists against hyperflexion, while the ti-collar support panels further protect wrists. So whether you’re heading into the ring or just the gym these gloves have you covered.

Trigger Point Downsizes with Grid Mini

The foam roller is one of the more overlooked workout accessories out there. We have one, but it got put away somewhere and as it’s out of site, it’s our of our routine. Unfortunately. This is one case where smaller might actually be better. Trigger Point is introducing its GRID Mini foam roller, a smaller version that will be compact enough to leave out, or take with you.

The GRID Mini from Trigger Point is 5-inches tall, and 5.5-inches in diameter. It has an attractive texture that might even blend in with modern décor – so it can stay out in your living room without becoming unsightly. While that’s one of benefits we like, Trigger Point also stresses that the smaller (and lightweight) equipment is portable and can be taken to the gym or even packs in a suitcase for a trip so you can get your workout on the road.

Trigger Point will make the GRID Mini available in April during IHRSA in Las Vegas.

Xbase Station

If you can’t always make it to the gym the next best thing is to take the gym with you. This is the idea behind the Xbase training pod, which can adhere to any clean, smooth, flat surface – OK, many hotel rooms are probably not going to work. But if you can find the right surface this device could be a good alternative when you can’t hit the gym. Just make sure the suction cup is secure so this portable gym doesn’t hit you instead. Surf Kentucky

Lexington, Kentucky is rather far from the ocean and quite a bit above sea level as well. It is really more known as horse country than surf country, but a new exercise center in its download is letting some feel like they’re catching the waves – even if they never get wet in the process.

Surfset Lexington offers fitness courses that are based on riding a surfboard, utilizing a device called a RipSurfer X. A 45-minute workout can reportedly burn 500 to 850 calories. Sessions cost around $20 but no trip to the beach is necessary!

Well Armoured

Under Armour has taken fitness monitoring in a new direction with its newly announced Armour 39 system, the first-of-its kind performance monitoring. This reportedly tracks “willpower,” providing a score that tells users exactly how hard they’ve worked during a training session. This take the usual calorie counter to a new level.

The system, which will be available next month, utilizes an algorithm that can track activity duration, body position, heart rate, intensity, calories burned and then determines what level of willpower was reached. It could allow athletes to further arm up during training.
