Garmin Run Time

There are sports watches that do everything – and more. But for those who just pound the pavement while running Garmin has you covered with the GPS-enabled Forerunner 10. It is designed to provide runners with the most essential data, including how far you ran and how fast you ran it, but it can also keep track of personal bests and records so you can know if you’re improving. Other features include a virtual pacer to allow you to compare current running speed to that of the optimum speed to meet a particular goal.

The watch doesn’t include a lot of more advanced functionality, but the $129 price point reflects this fact. It is designed – as Garmin notes – “for runners who want to simply lace up their shoes, push one button and just run.”

Heart rate monitors are great for keeping track of heart rate (obviously), time and calories burned. The Polar RC3 GPS is aimed at runners and cyclists who want a light weight heart rate monitor.

Ecoxpower Brings the Gear

We’ve seen a new trend this year with bicycle hub-attachments that power lights and more. Earlier this month we noted the BikeCharge Dynamo and now rugged outdoor and waterproof lifestyle product maker Ecoxgear by Grace Digital has introduced the Ecoxpower pedal powered headlight and smartphone charger.

This nifty gizmo attaches to most standard and oversized hubs, which is what the Dynamo and other devices do, but the Ecoxpower takes it a step further by providing handlebar mounted, water-resistant yet touch-screen compatible phone/GPS case. This solves the problem of worrying about that expensive device while riding home in the rain. Continue reading Ecoxpower Brings the Gear

ICEdot to Provide Emergency Response System for Athletes

A helmet can help protect the wearer’s head in case of a fall or accident, but it can’t call for help. What is an individual to do if he or she falls while out alone and far from home? ICEdot (In Case of Emergency) is working to provide a solution, and the company has partnered with SenseTech LLC of Denver to develop and launch a helmet-mounted impact sensor.

In the event of an accident the sensor determines the crucial forces, and can activate communications on the wearer’s smartphone to send a request for help. This could be used with cycling, skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing and even motocross helmets. Continue reading ICEdot to Provide Emergency Response System for Athletes

Polar RCX3 BIKE Ready for the Road

We really love the Polar RCX5 Tour de France training computer that is ideal for cycling, running, swimming and other sports. But for those who simply want to stick to the wheel the RCX5, which costs more buck, probably offers more bang than is needed. So rather than buying a monitor and not use all the functionality, those riders should look to the RCX3 BIKE, which can measure speed, distance, cadence and heart rate.

It is available now in a GPS version, and includes a zone optimizer so users can adjust heart rate zones for a ride, to track current condition, as well as fatigue, recovery and hydration.

Data can be shared with friends for some friendly competition in training, and the RCX3 can track routes, speed and distance – combining the benefits of having a cycling computer and heart rate monitor.

It offers a training benefit program, with instant performance feedback on each session – and that data can be analyzed in greater detail on Polar’s personal training website.

Garmin’s fēnix Outdoor Watch Goes Off Trail

GPS is great, but when you’re on a road you typically still have an idea of your location. For trails and other outdoors activities, if the GPS stops marking when you step off the trail, it’s useless. Garmin just released its fēnix Outdoor Watch, which still tracks and directs adventurers, even when they’re off the beaten path. Continue reading Garmin’s fēnix Outdoor Watch Goes Off Trail
