Winter is finally over – in fact it never arrived for much of the country – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t too early to think about next year. Actually it is Neva too early, as in Anthony Griesel’s Neva microprocessor-equipped ski poles that will bring “smart” technology to skiing and back wood snowshoeing and hiking.
Each pole features a waterproof grip with a mini-computer that can be linked via Bluetooth to an app on a user’s iPhone or Android device, and this could allow for flashes for incoming calls and even the ability to take calls without taking off the gloves. Other possibilities include text messages, and basic (but very useful data) such as temperature and elevation, as well as time. GPS could of course be a future possibility. Video after the jump
The Tour de France is still just over two months away, but yellow products are popping up with cycling tie-ins. Polar is offering a limited edition Polar RCX5 Tour de France training computer.

GPS is very good for plotting distance when fairly direct travel is involved, but this isn’t always possible. One notable area where this can be difficult is with sailing as tacking to catch the wind is necessary, making it nearly impossible to determine arrival time.

The timepiece will tell more than the time, offering information on just about everything in your life – and including health monitoring options and GPS when needed. It will be available later this year in 16GB and 32GB options, along with Wi-Fi connectivity. It could be one watch that will be good for work, working out and just about anything else. We’ve reported on the Motorola MOTOACTV a few times already, but we’ve circled back as the company announced a new golf edition that is ready to hit the links. This actually includes a partnership with the mobile device developer and three-time PGA Tour winner Bubba Watson. This new MOTOACTV takes proven GPS tracker and basically has added a virtual caddy and online clubhouse into the mix.
Fortunately the same technology that can allow athletes to know how where and how far they’ve run can be used to keep track of family members with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Swiss-based u-blox has created Watchie, a GPS-based device that can be worn by patients as a watch and provide real time GPS tracking for caregivers.
Get your running gear ready. Srava has a new running app, and has partnered with GU Energy Labs to create a challenge for spring. Between March 9 and April 9 there is but one goal. Run. The GU 100,000 Mile Challenge encourages participants to run as many miles as they can in 31 days. 
When you’re in a pool, swimming from point A to B is a no-brainer. Out in open water, however, tracking your performance and location is a bit more difficult. The new Hydro Tracker GPS from FINIS is a fitness device designed for open water swimmers that tracks, maps, and records performance.
