Well Armoured

Under Armour has taken fitness monitoring in a new direction with its newly announced Armour 39 system, the first-of-its kind performance monitoring. This reportedly tracks “willpower,” providing a score that tells users exactly how hard they’ve worked during a training session. This take the usual calorie counter to a new level.

The system, which will be available next month, utilizes an algorithm that can track activity duration, body position, heart rate, intensity, calories burned and then determines what level of willpower was reached. It could allow athletes to further arm up during training.

iXtreme Obstacles App

There have been no shortage of fitness apps to help users stay fit while on the go, but the Obstacles XRT app goes to the extreme – and XRT even stands for Extreme Reality Training. It provides instructional videos based on high intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts, which can be done from the home. While that might not sound particularly extreme the works promise otherwise. The only thing not extreme is that this only is available for iOS.

Easy Breezing

There are plenty of wearable devices that can track activity as well as calorie intake. However the actual tracking isn’t actually accurate because these devices – including heart rate monitors – can’t determine an individual’s specific metabolism and thus can’t really determine how fast one is really burning calories. While the devices aren’t technically guessing, the results aren’t 100 percent accurate, and this is why some users don’t see the results they think they should be getting. 2013 CES: Panasonic Gets In on the Action

It seems like everyone is now getting in on the action camera bandwagon. At last week’s 2013 International CES in Las Vegas Panasonic introduced its HX-A100, which offers a unique twist in the “point-of-view active lifestyle camera” category. Unlike those “helmet-mountable” cameras from GoPro, Contour and others this one features an earhook that makes it wearable without a helmet! This one is even waterproof so perhaps would let swimmers get in on the action too.

It features built-in Wi-Fi so users can broadcast live video with simultaneous full-HD recording, which can be controlled from smartphone or tablet as well. The new A100 will offer 140 minutes of battery life and can record in Full HD at 1,920×1,080 resolution at 60FPX. It will be ready to go in march.

KineticShift Goes For Three

It was three years ago at CES that KineticShift officially launched. In that time we’ve filled more than 220 pages of news, show reports, reviews and interviews. We’ve logged countless miles running, on bikes and on the slopes. We’ve tested several dozen products and hopefully have gotten healthier and fitter for it all.

This week we head back to Las Vegas for the 2013 International CES, and that is just the beginning. Throughout the month we’ll report on the latest news and products coming out of SHOT Show, SIA Snow Show, NAIAS (Detroit Auto Show) and Outdoor Retailer Show. And there is much, much more to come. It has been a great three years and we look forward to what 2013 has to offer!

We’re also on the look for some help, so contact us if you’d like to contribute or see your product covered on KineticShift!

Compact Waist Belt

While many people may “supersize” all aspects of their lives and like the idea of a “supersized” waist belt, the folks at SPI had another idea. Small Personal Item Belt as these are called are exactly that, small for taking the bare essentials. The company has introduced a line of SPIbelts that can hold ID, some cash and some keys. In other words leave everything else at home!

Not a bad idea. Reduce the waist belt and hopefully let the user get back to keeping the waistline down as well.

Fit Like a Glove

From BikeRadar: Best winter gloves for mountain biking and commuting
Once the temperature drops, riding-specific winter gloves are essential for keeping warm and in control on your bike. A decent pair will offer windproofing and, in some cases, waterproofing, although it’s important that any fleeciness doesn’t get too in the way of dexterity. Strava’s Year in Review

Strava apparently had a very good year. The activity tracking system released some details on usage for 2012. According to the company Strava athletes rode and ran 500 million miles, or 85 percent of the length of Earth’s annual trip around the sun. Strava cyclists ascended over six million meters, equal to the entire peloton in the Tour de France climbing Alpe d’Huez 30,000 times!

Strava runners climbed over 226 million meters, which is on par with running the Speedgoat 50k course more than 67,000 times. Continue reading Strava’s Year in Review

Barefoot Winter Shoe

Time and tide wait for no man and when the snow falls you can either wait until spring or hit the treadmill to get in a run. Or you can add some layers and endure a run in a winter wonderland. But what if you prefer the barefoot running? That doesn’t seem to mix with ice and snow.

But Vibram FiveFingers still has your feet covered while offering that minimalist style with glove-like fitting shoes designed for the winter. The Lontra feature a multi-layer laminate upper with fully taped seams to provide insulation and water resistance, while the micro-pile fleece liner is soft against the skin. The neoprene heel cuff will keep out snow and debris as well. Continue reading Barefoot Winter Shoe
