Take the sting out of your eyes with Sweat GUTR

One of the most annoying and sometimes dangerous situations that can occur will cycling is to have sweat, laced with sunscreen, drip into one or both eyes. This is especially true while descending some of the canyons around Colorado at over 50- miles per hour. Just that split second of time not focusing on the road can mean the difference between riding home on your bike and never making home again. The pads inside a helmet do a decent job holding the sweat back to a point, but once they become saturated, the sweat just continues to run down the forehead and into the eyes. A terry cloth and bandanas can also be used, but they too will become soaked with sweat leading to the same problem.

There exists another solution for managing the sweat that doesn’t involve a fabric band that can ultimately become saturated with perspiration. The Sweat GUTR is an ingenious little invention that does exactly as the name implies – it acts like a rain gutter for sweat. The thin, non-absorbent band is worn across the forehead, just as a terry cloth sweatband is worn; but instead of soaking up the sweat, it channels the sweat from the forehead to fall down the face between the ears and eyes. When a workout is over, simply remove the Sweat GUTR, wash it with soap and water, and let it dry. Continue reading Take the sting out of your eyes with Sweat GUTR

Take a look at the stats for the most recent Tour de Frances and you will find that the average speed for the entire 2000+ mile race is between 24 and 26 miles per hour. So how is it possible that a new World Record for the relatively short distance of 100 kilometers (62 miles) was just established at an average speed of 14.3 miles per hour? Well, it is possible through the efforts of a Frenchman, Robert Marchand, who will turn 101 on November 26. That’s right, 101 years old, nearly four times as old as the average age of the Tour de France winners. Continue reading How can 14.3mph set a Cycling World Record?

Get a (Lark)Life

Everyone can use a little motivation to stay on the path and reach the goals. Sometimes that motivation can come from a life coach but now it can just as easily come from Larklife, a wearable fitness device that tracks users activities including exercise, diet and even sleep patterns. It features a vibrating alarm clock, sleep quality tracker, calorie counter, hydration tracker and of course offers fitness coaching tips.

Where this one differs from similar devices is that it syncs with an iOS app – Android app is a possibility down the road – and this can provide real-time feedback on your efforts. Continue reading Get a (Lark)Life

Sir Hoy Says Gadgets Can Impact Health

Olympic and World Champion cyclist Sir Christopher Hoy certainly knows a thing or two about staying fit. The Scottish cyclists also noted recently that fitness gadgets are not gimmicks and could in fact have a positive impact on health – simply because they encourage people to take up sports.

“Are fitness gadgets gimmicky,” he asked when speaking to U.K.-based gadget magazine T3? “I don’t think so. Everything we do is measurable and it’s that information you get that is useful. Whether they do or do not work isn’t really an issue.”

“If they encourage people to go out an exercise then they have achieved their goal,” he added. “It’s the same as buying a new pair of jeans – you’d want to put them on and go out. If you’ve just bought a new pair of running trainers, you’d naturally want to try them out.”

Good words of wisdom from someone who has certainly gone the distance.

49ers Help Construct Fitness Zone

Instead of heading to the end zone in an NFL game, last week players from the San Francisco 49ers helped complete the new outdoor 49ers Fitness Zone at Peterson Middle School in Santa Clara. The 49ers reportedly traded in their cleats, shoulder pads and even game faces and picked up power tools, put on smiles and helped install seats and hang two gates at the new center.

The 49er Fitness Zone features green technology, and requires no electricity or scheduled maintenance. It is designed to increase physical fitness and encourage healthy lifestyles among the youth. Several philanthropic community businesses joined the 49ers and United Healthcare in erecting the outdoor fitness zone as part of the NFL-United Way Hometown Huddle Day of Service.

The dedication of the center also correlated with the NFL’s Play 60 program, a campaign to encourage children to be active for 60 minutes a day in order to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity.

Run for the Ribbon

With October being breast cancer awareness month we’re seeing several promotions and campaigns to raise awareness and to highlight the important role exercise plays in reducing the risks. This includes the Fourth Annual Cybex Pink Ribbon Run.

The maker of premium exercise equipment is partnering with fitness clubs, and other organizations to install special-edition pink treadmills throughout the country. For each mile logged on every new qualifying pink Cybex treadmill during October the company will donate 10 cents to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. More than $100,000 has been raised in the first three years of the Pink Ribbon Run, with this year expected to surpass previous years.

Interbike 2012: PocketFuel Natural ‘Concoctions’

The words ‘whole food’ are not just reserved for the name of a grocery chain, but is a term referring to food that is eaten in its purest, unprocessed form. Without ingredients like partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, or many of the chemicals that we can barely pronounce, the body can digest whole foods much easier than those containing processed ingredients. As a bonus, whole foods often taste much better than their processed counterparts and are much easier to stomach during a physical activity lasting several hours.

There are many solid, whole food type of energy bars on the market that can be carried easily in a pack or cycling jersey pocket. There are even unprocessed drink options. But when it comes to gels, there are not many choices for those wanting a compact, easy to carry, quick energy boast. While strolling the floor at Interbike this year, I was able to sample a number of different flavors of the whole food type of energy ‘gel’, PocketFuel, a 100% all natural energy product. Nerf Ball Goes High Tech

While the Nerf football was not the first Nerf ball, since 1972 it has the brand’s most popular ball. It has been used in pickup games ever since. Now 40 years the Nerf Firevision could allow night games where lights aren’t required. The new ball, which is also available in a basketball version, light up.

And so that the game playing doesn’t attract too much attention these Nerf balls can only be seen by those wearing Firevision glasses. No charging required.

Interbike 2012: Roll it for Recovery

Have you ever finished a run or ride and your legs feel heavy or sore? That feeling is due to the breaking down of the muscle tissues and ‘toxins’ like lactic acid that build up inside the muscles. A massage is one of the best ways to flush those toxins and improve circulation which in turn will speed recovery and rebuilding of those muscle tissues. Unfortunately not everyone can afford their own personal masseur, the cost of paying for a daily massage, or they simply are not close to a Massage Therapist. There are a number of different devices on the market to help an athlete perform a massage on their own aching muscles when they can’t get a massage. While down at Interbike this year, we had a chance to checkout a new entry in the personal massage market – the R8 from Roll Recovery is a roller type of device that is designed specifically for use on an athlete’s legs. Treadmill on the Wall

This past summer we noted the Climblock Rotor Wall, a rotating climbing wall that was ideal for those with big bucks and bigger space. While the Climblock could see its way to gyms and fitness clubs it just won’t work in most homes.

But the Treadwall could be the answer. This machine offers a 4 foot wide climbing area and works much like a treadmill – except that it is vertical instead of horizontal obviously. It is still 10 feet tall, so probably not ideal for those with low ceilings. The M4 Base model comes as a vertical only unit that is affordable but can be used against a wall, while the M4 PRO even offers a +5 to -20 degree angle to up the challenge.

Interbike 2012: Eyes on Cébé Eyewear

During our annual pilgrimage down to Las Vegas for Interbike, we had a chance to stop by the Bushnell Eyewear booth to checkout their current lineup. For those of you who are not familiar with the Bushnell Eyewear name, they are the parent company of Bolle and Serengetti – two high end eyewear lines. But it wasn’t the offerings under those two names that piqued our interest, it was a third name in the booth, Cébé, which caught our eye. Continue reading Interbike 2012: Eyes on Cébé Eyewear

Office Fitness Done Right

Earlier we called out the OfficeGym chair as being a silly example of office-meets-gym fitness. But then we came across the Ping Pong Conference Table, and this struck us as a true example of a two-in-one product that can be all business until it is time to play. It is made from stark, powder-coated white tubular steel and features concealed drawers to hold office supplies or the office’s ping pong paddles, balls and net.
