ARIS Rolls With New Wheels

There has been a lot of development with skateboards – including composite decks – but now ARIS Sports is taking a new turn that will allow riders to change the way they turn. The ARIS Blade Runner features conical wheels, which also feature carving wheels with the diameter or regular wheels at the trucks, but become narrower towards the outside.

The boards, which will be available in three models including a snowboard styled deck, long and short boards. Each will cost about $200 and these will be available later this year.

What’s in a Name? Douchebag Has Us Asking

Maybe Jon Olsson should have thought about the name, but apparently he liked the ring of the “Douchebag,” which is actually the result of collaboration between skiers, designers, engineers and a technical university. Apparently the pro skier, who travels more than 300 days a year with his skis, looked to create a bag that could hold two pair of skis and basically got input from 150 skiers. Parabox Retrofits Disc Brake for Cyclo-cross Bikes

When the International Cycling Union (UCI) announced that it was allowing for disc brakes with cyclo-cross bikes there were two quick opinions: the first that it was about time, and the second, now I need to buy a new bike!

Well, fortunately bicycle brake maker TRP saw that not everyone was going to want to replace their bikes, and has now released the Parabox, a system that easily allows cyclo-cross bike owners to convert their bikes to hydraulic discs. The Parabox works with existing cable-based brake levers, via a junction box master that is linked to the levers via two hose-enclosed cables, which activate the cylinder mechanisms within the box. The system further includes front- and rear-specific calipers along with pads, 160 mm rotors and hydraulic lines.

So while this might require a shop to install, it certainly beats buying a new bike!

Base Camp Gloves

Sometimes gloves can be overkill, but Italian outdoor clothing maker Camp has introduced a new medium weight base glove, the G COMP WIND, that features a durable synthetic leather palm along with Grip’R pads on the thumb and index finger. The result gives the wearer a bit more hand control. These “base” Camp gloves further feature a terry wipe strip on the thumb that can be used to clean goggles or glasses.

When the temperatures fall or conditions worsen, ripstop nylon Windmit’N covers can be pulled over to provide extra protection to the fingers, while still leaving the palm exposed. This is like two gloves in one, and best of all allows more precise finger use without the need to expose the hand in the process.

Sears Gets in Fitness Game

Mass retailer Sears has tried to redefine itself a few times. The store that is still probably best remembered for tires and its tasty popcorn, offered its “softer side” back in 1994. Now the company is following such retailers as Best Buy, showing that it can help customers get fit as well.

Sears has announced it is introducing its “Fitness Flagship” store-within-a-store at more than 35 sites across the country. These 6,000 sq. feet centers provide new fitness products and floor models. Is this the fitter side of Sears? Press Release after the jump

Bontrager Goes to the Races With Trek

The world’s top-ranked downhill team will race on the newly developed models. Press Release after the jump

Like a Frog to Water

There is an old saying that water and oil don’t mix, and now De Soto is looking to become the first triathlon company to offer an alternative to petroleum-based wetsuits. The new T1 Wetsuits could also make it easy to be green!

“We have seamlessly replaced one rubber with another that is better,” says company founder, Emilio De Soto. “It is more buoyant, it helps you swim faster, and it lasts longer.  If nothing else were to change, we are selling a better-performing product with less detriment to the environment, which is always our goal.”

The suits are made of GreenGoma rubber that reportedly offers better stretch, buoyancy, durability and insulation. It is made of a close-cell injected construction that also makes it 98.9 percent water impermeable, but it also is lighter and dries out faster than petroleum-based wetsuits. So maybe it will let wearers take to the water… like a frog!

Skiing Out of Control? Get Custom-Fitted Boots

The Surefoot RX130 custom ski boot lists for $995.

Ever wonder why you can’t seem to ski properly when you’re on the slopes, that you can’t turn as tight or feel in control at all times? The answer may lie in the boots you’re wearing, according to Forbes contributor Larry Olmsted in an extensive piece he’s written on the subject of custom boots. Olmsted says that of all the ski equipment, the boots are what make the experience, not even the skis themselves. (We theorize ill-fitting boots could be a reason why beginner skiers have a hard time learning, too, but no boot will instantly make you a master skier.)

The reasons for buying a custom boot? Olmsted cites three advantages: improved skiing for more control and betters turns; more comfort for more runs, less soreness, and less fatigue; and warmth for better blood circulation. Despite his championing custom ski boots, he acknowledges the high price of $1,014 to $1,214 for a pair. But for avid skiers looking to conquer the mountain, a custom boot might be the weapon you need. Hit the link to read further about how custom boots are made and the benefits they offer.

More Shock from Casio

Earlier this week we noted that Casio has a limited edition G-Shock watch for those who want to add a little style to their wrists while on the go. Now Casio is offering a few more options with its G-Shock line, including connectivity to mobile smartphones.

The G-Shock GB-6900 series, which will arrive early this year, will feature Bluetooth LE connectivity and can be paired with select Android smartphones, including the upcoming NEC Medias LTE N-04D and NEC Medias PP N-0ID. This won’t unfortunately transform the rugged time pieces into fitness watches, but it will show incoming calls, emails and text messages on the display – something that can be handy while hiking, cycling or otherwise on the go.

The phones are set to arrive in Japan in March, and hopefully will arrive stateside soon after.

Row, Row Your Workout

For 2012 you might be able to row to a better and fitter you! The American made Waterrower Rowing Machine offers all the benefits of hitting the Charles River without the need to set foot in Boston! What makes this rowing machine special is the WaterFlywheel that was specifically designed to emulate the exact dynamics of the boat as it sails across the water.

Water is 800 times denser than air and thus this machine requires no mechanical dampening or resistance. Instead the water provides a “natural” feel, and creates just the right rhythm of motion as well and once you get in the rhythm of things you might feel as if you’re gliding on air as much as powering down stream!
