Burn More?

From Runner’s World: Running v. Walking: How Many Calories Will You Burn?
Two weeks ago, I began planning an update to a Walking v. Running calorie-burn article that I had written for Runner’s World magazine in 2005. When that article subsequently appeared on the RunnersWorld.com website, it attracted a lot of interest and comments. Some of those comments displayed the widespread confusion and outright disbelief that’s common to this topic. Bike Park of Dreams Goes With Flow(Form)

If you build it they will come. This isn’t just about fictional ballparks in the movies, but playgrounds, skate parks and bike trails. And leading the way is Alpine Bike Parks, which now has announced a new way to go with the flow.

The FlowForm features are specially engineered playground structures that will allow bike parks to create even more professional designs that are popular with riders. These can be designed to accommodate a new facility or added into an existing trail system to either enhance the flow or even provide durability that might not exist in nature. Laser Spoke Track Pedal Power

While many cyclists watch distance, heart rate and calories burned another number to watch is the power output. This is a harder number to track however, but now the Laser Spoke might make it just a bit easier – and best of all this third-party device can work on virtually any bicycle.

It can measure the power generated by the rider’s legs at the spokes of the wheel through a laser-based optical system, which consists of a laser and position-sensitive detector that can be mounted on the hub. This laser fires a beam at a prism attached to the rim, and this determines the deflection and the applied torque. Continue reading Laser Spoke Track Pedal Power

Cycle Jacket Protects From UV Rays

While there are plenty of ways to get out of the sun, these aren’t always possible when hitting the bike. On some rides there is little if any shade to be found. One option is to get covered in sunscreen, or donning the right apparel.

There are plenty of sun glasses to protect the eyes and now Specialized has introduced the Solar Jet Jersey, a long-sleeve top that offers a UPF 50 rating. And while it might seem odd to wear a full sleeve jersey in the heat, this one features fabric that is light and breathable that even on a hot day it doesn’t let the wearer get heated up. Exergy Tour Tracker App for Women’s Cycling Race

In cycling, women don’t get a ton of recognition. Few races are broadcast on TV, and there aren’t quite as many teams worldwide as there are for men’s cycling. Even if you the Exergy Tour cycling stage race going on this week throughout Southwestern Idaho won’t be broadcast near you, you can track the progress of female cyclists on the inaugural tour with the Exergy Tour Tracker app, available for iPhone, iPad and Android.

The app will provide live coverage of the women’s cycling race in Idaho.

“The unique ability to bring the inaugural Exergy Tour to a world-wide audience through Tour Tracker and its innovative mobile video platform speaks to Exergy’s vision to further engage corporate sponsors, media, spectators, athletes and fans,” said Heather Hill, marketing, communications and events director for the Exergy Tour, in a corporate statement.

“On site during the event, spectators will also be able to watch the live Tour Tracker video simulcast on the big screens – allowing fans to watch start-to-finish coverage every day of the Tour whether they are at work, out and about, on the course or at the finish line.”

Prior to the start of the race we loaded the Tour Tracker app. It lists participating teams but doesn’t yet have profiles on each of the riders. We like the “Cycling 101″ section under Extras, which explains cycling terms such as a tour, stage, time trial, neutral start, finish line, general classification, peloton, domestique and other terms commonly used in professional cycling.

Brooklyn Cruiser Adds 3-Speed Models to its Commuter Line-Up

In response to consumer demand for the versatility of more gears, Brooklyn Cruiser recently unveiled two new 3-speed models at the New Amsterdam Bicycle Show at Skylight Soho in Manhattan.

The men’s Driggs 3 and women’s Willow 3 models are equipped with a Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub and grip shifter, delivering ease of operation and a virtually maintenance-free drive train. A front lever brake assists the coaster brake hub. Leather Saddle Offers Retro Appeal

With a look out of last century – and we mean way before 1999 – the World Traveller B17 from Brooks isn’t designed to be the fastest, lightest or sleekest. This leather saddle is however meant for the globe trekker, as it builds into the WCR Grand Tour, the competitive bike race that started in February with riders vying to circumnavigate the world.

The new bike saddle features a 1920’s style image – but with the year 2012 still part of the motif. It is made of durable leather, chromed-cooper steel rails and frame, along with cooper rivets. It should be ready for a tour of the world, or just treks around town.
