Adidas and Specialized Introduce Pro Only Cycling Shoes

Adidas has been turning heads the last couple of weeks with new shoes just in time for the Olympic Games, and now the company has introduced a new cycling shoe that comes through a collaboration with Specialized. However to get the new Sonic shoes you might have to make the Olympics. The shoes are pro-only and won’t be released commercially.

So what do the pros get? First, the R&D might of Adidas, which think isn’t too shabby, and then insight from Specialized. The Sonic features a Specialized sole and BOA closures, as well as an Adidas thermobonded upper. Continue reading Adidas and Specialized Introduce Pro Only Cycling Shoes

Olympic Technology Spotlight: P2i Nano-Coating

httpv://youtu.be/BSW9svih5Ro

There is a lot of technology that is being used in this summer’s Olympic Games and KineticShift is looking to spotlight much of it. In the water it can mean being water resistant and P2i has developed a liquid repellent nano-coating technology. The company has partnered with UK Sport, in conjunction with British Cycling and Sailing to provide this coating for bike components and sailing harnesses.

The company also worked with the Australian Canoe Slalom team (as shown in the video above) to provide protection for spray skirts.

Commuter Shoes for Riders

There are plenty of bicycles designed for commuters, and a lot of accessories including bags and apparel. But one piece of equipment often missing is the right shoe! Road and mountain shoes can be a problem as many buildings don’t like the idea of cleats on their precious floors. This makes it hard to keep a pair of shoes at the office and commute in with bike shoes.

But the Teva freeride shoes could work well for those who don’t mind flat pedals, which aren’t a bad idea for commuting. The shoes offer Pedalink tread to grip the pedals, while offering enough style that you might not need to change them for work.

Zuri Handcrafted Bamboo Bicycles

Bamboo as a material for bicycles isn’t really that new. There have been a few companies that have used the fast-growing, ultra-strong grass as a material choice for frame design. The latest is German-owned Zuri, which might seem as an odd choice as bamboo isn’t exactly native to the Rhine or Black Forrest.

However, the hand built bikes are actually produced in Africa from locally grown bamboo. The venture was started by David Hoffmann and Philipp Sayler of Munich, who set up shop in Zambia where the bamboo is harvested. The pair also look for bamboo that has real character and grain to give the bikes a nice sense of style. Continue reading Zuri Handcrafted Bamboo Bicycles

Tite Ends for the Bar

Handle bar wrap comes in many colors, and even degrees of padding – but all have the same problem. They require actual tape of some sort to close off the upper end. Cyclist and IT guy Tom Schoegler has created something different with the Tite Ends.

He worked with 3M and created a polyolefin based wrap that is thick enough to hold the bar wrap in place but yet it remains pliable and comfortable. It requires a heat gun or hair dryer to shrink it down – but the key is that it shrinks radially not lengthwise. Just fire up the gun and it shrinks to a perfect fit. Pure Fix Glows the Way

We’ve seen a lot of bike lights, reflectors and even a tube wrap that helps light up the night. But now Pure Fix Cycles says “let it go glow, let it go glow, let it glow” with the Kilo, the first ever glow in the dark fixed gear bicycle. For that matter we think this is the first EVER glow in the dark bike period. Additional photos after the jump

ICEdot to Provide Emergency Response System for Athletes

A helmet can help protect the wearer’s head in case of a fall or accident, but it can’t call for help. What is an individual to do if he or she falls while out alone and far from home? ICEdot (In Case of Emergency) is working to provide a solution, and the company has partnered with SenseTech LLC of Denver to develop and launch a helmet-mounted impact sensor.

In the event of an accident the sensor determines the crucial forces, and can activate communications on the wearer’s smartphone to send a request for help. This could be used with cycling, skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing and even motocross helmets. Continue reading ICEdot to Provide Emergency Response System for Athletes

H2bike System Water Bottle Meets Bladder System

There are those that love hydration packs but others dislike the idea of wearing a backpack filled with water. The Israeli company BlueDesert seems to have a solution – it basically turns a water bottle into a hydration pack that allows for sipping of water while on the go but without the need to war a bladder pack on the back.

The solution is fairly simple. The SmarTube (as it is called) is basically a coiled hose that connects to the bottle and acts as a straw for the rider. It also features what the company calls the SpiralTube, which mounts to the handlebars and automatically spoils the hose when it is released.

Camera Helmet

We’ve seen a lot of helmet cameras but now we’ve seen the first truce camera helmet – as in a helmet designed specifically to be used with a helmet-mounted camera. Now the first thing to keep in mind is that many bicycle race organizations have banned the use of helmet-mounted cameras, and some cycling groups recommend mounting the camera somewhere besides a helmet as the gadget can actually cause head and neck injury in a crash.

But if you absolutely want or even NEED to have a helmet-mounted camera, then consider the AMARA CAM helmet from Kali Protectives. This brain bucket features a built-in mounting point that accepts a number of popular sport camcorders and even head lamps. The helmets are made of polycarbonate shell and EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam liner that should help keep the head protected nicely enough. Continue reading Camera Helmet

Dirtbag is Dirt Cheap Bike Rack

Need a cheap bike rack? How about the Dirtbag from Küat Racks, a simple solution for those who don’t want to spend more than $13 for a bike rack! It is billed as the most affordable rack on the market, which is surely true – but using it could cost you.

This is because it “mounts anywhere” and it isn’t really a rack, as much as a simple piece of metal that clamps down the front fork with the help of the bike’s skewer. In fact it is probably a good idea to have an extra skewer to use the Dirtbag. Continue reading Dirtbag is Dirt Cheap Bike Rack
