We first heard about the Hӧvding inflatable bike helmet back in May (also called the “invisible helmet” because you don’t see it until you need it), and now the Swedish designed brain bucket is ready to ride – or ready for riders we should say.
The fashion forward helmet, which can detect a crash, and inflate allows riders to have the wind in their hair when they ride – and yet protect the same head and hair from being covered in blood and gray matter should a crash occur. It won’t come cheap, and will reportedly cost around $600. But can you put a price on stylish safety? Video shows the helmet in action after the jump
Summer doesn’t last forever. For cyclists that means you either follow those surfers around and look for that mythical endless summer or you accept the fact that you’re going to have to hit the trainer indoors. Or… you can tackle winter head on!
There are plenty of options for gloves, jackets and even cycling pants that can handle a serious winter. And now the Wölvhammer will keep the feet comfortable. There have been attempts to make a wintertime cycling boot, but this new design from 45NORTH might just be ready for the North Pole. Continue reading Wölvhammer Boots Ready for Winter
Urban transport bike maker Tern certainly took the folding bike market by storm in recent years, and now the company looks to swoop in again, fittingly with its Swoop series of bicycles that will feature an ultra low-step frame design. The Swoop offers a top tube that is only 11-inches (28cm) off the ground, which makes it one of the lowest step bikes on the market.
The design offers the promise of a low center of gravity that enhances stability, especially for less experienced cyclists. It also offers an upright riding geometry because who really needs to “race” to the office or store, and this puts less stress on the arms and neck, while also aiding in the ability to see the road ahead. Bike Luminance is a Kickstarter project that aims to create a bike helmet with a motion reactive lighting system that will signal your turns with the tilt of your head. A prototype of the helmet has LED lighting that blinks to signal a right turn, left turn and stop, depending on how you incline your head while riding. Commuting to work requires a bit of planning ahead. A flat tire can’t be an excuse for being late. In addition to carrying a spare tube it is a good idea to have a pump – even if you’re using a CO2 inflation system. It is always good to have a backup plan in place. The problem with being prepared is that it means carrying way too much stuff. One easy solution is a seatpost pump.
BioLogic hasn’t introduced the first seatpost to include a pump inside, but the company’s logically took the concept to the next step and fittingly named it PostPump 2.0. What makes stand out is that instead of a low-capacity pump that will have you trying to pump air until it is lunch time, the PostPump 2.0 functions much like a high-capacity floor pump.
It features a flip-out foot stand and yet makes use of a saddle as a handle so users can actually stand while pumping. The design further features precision-machined aluminum fittings to ensure maximum pressure and stroke volume. It also offers a flip-to-fit adapter so it can be used with post Presta and Schrader values. And yet it can still be integrated inside the post. This design recent won a 2012 red dot product design award. Continue reading Very Logical Pump
As summer soon will head to fall it means that riding on the trainer won’t be far behind. There are many cycle computers systems that pair with smartphones for riding on the road but now cycle trainer maker Kinetic (we like the name as much as we like their trainers) is set to roll out the Bluetooth Smart system that can be used with its fluid trainers.
The Kinetic inRide Watt Meter consists of a heart rate monitor, power sensor that connects to the rear of the trainer and an app for the iPhone 4S and new iPad. This system can measure speed and cadence while the user does the spin thing. The accompanying app can track power including current, average and max; heart rate, including current, average and max; speed; cadence, distance; and calories burned. Staying decidedly bi-partisan, health insurance provider Humana will be sending 20 Freewheelin pedal busses to both the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Tampa taking place August 26 – 30, and the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Charlotte, North Carolina running from September 2 – 6. Architect Charles Wagner has created a novel concept for track bike racing with his Luxodrome design, which essentially consists of side-by-side 200 meter and 250 meter tracks that are connected with diverging lanes. Of course this would require a new type of racing, but it could put a new spin on the century old sport.
Serious or even semi-serious road cyclists know that road pedals and cleats have one serious problem – namely that they wear out. This is most notable of the Look Keo style cleats, as the plastic wears quickly when riders do anything other than ride. Just touching down at stop signs and lights can quickly wear out the cleats, which often should be replaced once noticeable wear is seen – otherwise the cleats can float incorrectly in the pedals or worse break. Either can make it hard to pedal properly, which can be annoying and even dangerous.
But Fibrax have introduced a novel system, pedal cleats that can be rotated to prolong the life. Dubbed the 2Face the cleats can be removed, turned and remounted, which adds to the life of the cleats and ensures a few more miles. Continue reading Fibrax Shows 2Face
We know where we’ll be on the morning of September 19. We’ll be in Las Vegas at the Interbike Trade Show, and more specifically we’ll be at the Industry Breakfast, presented by Bikes Belong and NBDA. For this year’s inaugural industry breakfast John Burke, CEO of Trek Bicycle Corporation will be on hand to deliver the keynote address.
Burke’s keynote presentation is expected to address a clear plan to get the U.S. bicycle business from $6B to $10B a year by 2020, and what the industry needs to do to make it happen. He plans to describe the crucial role that the industry—retailers and suppliers–must play to create an effective movement that links bike businesses and consumers to shape a cycling-friendly future. This call-to-action presents the pathway to doubling the size of the U.S. bike industry and dramatically increasing IBD sales. Continue reading Trek CEO to Offer Keynote at Interbike
We first heard about BikeGlow almost two years ago, and the company – which produces a flexible light tube that can be wrapped around the frame to provide some extra illumination at night – has launched a Kickstarter project to produce a removable four LED tail light to the light show. The new light kit will consist of a 10 foot long tube that includes a tail light and will be available in several colors including , Green, Yellow, Red, Pink, Purple, Aqua and White.
It will reportedly run for up to eight hours on two AA batteries that are stored in the tail light, and the whole kit should make a bike visible from up to 500 feet.
The package will retail for $35 but Kickstarter pledges are going now for $20.
