Interbike 2012: Purely Custom(ize) Your Bike

You’ve just bought or finished building your new bike and it is just about perfect. The weight is where you want it and the positioning is spot on, but there just is something that doesn’t make it feel like your bike yet. A splash of color or some custom engraving can often be that ‘cherry on the top’ to finish off your ride and really make it feel like yours. Purely Custom, of Twin Falls, Idaho, is in the business of manufacturing and customizing anodized aluminum parts for the bicycle industry and they are doing it in America for a very reasonable price. Bright (Helmet) Idea

As we’ve noted of late the weather is getting cooler as fall has arrived, but more importantly the sun is setting earlier and that means less time to ride home before dark. Having lights and reflectors on a bike is always a good idea, but now the folks at BrightHelmet have had a bright idea by providing LED strips molded into the shell of the helmet, offering 360-degree visibility to drivers.

Height Adjustable Wheel Block for Indoor Riding

It is starting to feel like that time of the year when riding moves from the outdoors to the indoors. As the weather cools, and as it gets dark earlier many cyclists opt to hit the trainer instead of the road. Most rear wheel trainers thus raise the back end of the bike, which results in a feeling of going downhill – something that can effect balance and the quality of the ride on the trainer.

But the Retül Levül might just level the field – or rather the living room. It is much more than just a block or lift, and in fact is fully adjustable in height so the front wheel can be just where you need it. And it is much more stable than phone books. XFire Aims at Creating Bike Lane

There are times when drivers simply won’t share the road and nothing short of a protected bike lane will do the trick, but there are times where the driver of a car simply didn’t know how close he/she was to a rider. We’ve seen a few systems that light the way, by projecting a visual cue to drivers, including the LightLane and Blaze, which were both handlebar mounted light systems.

Now we’ve started to hear about the XFire Bike Lane Safety Light, which places a visual barrier on each side of the bike. The system utilizes two high-visibility red lasers that project a virtual bike lane, and these are meant to be bright enough to be seen under headlights and streetlights. It is designed to be weatherproof as well so it will help alert drivers even in foul conditions. Continue reading XFire Aims at Creating Bike Lane

Bike Friendly Knapsack

You don’t wear a football helmet to bike, and you probably don’t wear baseball shoes either while riding during the daily commute. So why try to use a bag that isn’t really designed for cycling? Messenger bags are good, but now the Brooks Piccadilly Knapsack might just be the best thing for commuter cyclists since bike lanes.

This leather pack features a single top design along with a top handle for easy carrying off the bike, but the harness system is what this stand out. It ensures ideal balance, which can be important when dodging cars and walkers while heading through concrete jungle to get to work. The Piccadilly might make the trip a little easier so you and your belongs make it there in one piece.

Abus Folding Lock

We’ve seen folding bikes and even folding bike helmets, but the new Abus Bordo 6000 Ecolution is a bike lock that folds up. As with prior models from Abus, the lock can fold into a compact package that can be mounted on the bike or stashed in a pack. The lock unfolds via a series of riveted links making for a variety of locking configurations.

The Bordo line is available in a range of security levels, but the Bordo 6000 Ecolution is designed to be recycled at the end of its life. That’s an odd twist for a product, especially one that most users would want to last forever. Some reviews also note that because it is easy to break down to be recycled it could be all too easy to break when it should be protecting the bike. Continue reading Abus Folding Lock

NYC Taxi Video Raises Door Prize Awareness

httpv://youtu.be/LcprI3xFf24

As a former New York city resident and cyclist, I’m very familiar with the door prize. That’s what happens when you’re riding and the driver or passenger opens the car door in front of you at a point when running into it is unavoidable. NYC DOT (Department of Transportation) produced a 30-second video that airs in taxis around the city to raise awareness and advises passengers to exit the taxi on the right side – by the curb – and to look before opening the door.
