High-end “Commuter Bike”

When we think of a commuter bike we think of something that you don’t mind locking up all day while you’re at your desk. We think of something that can take a beating, something that you ride to work and back but a bike that likely sits next to something at home that you ride on the weekends or after work.

Needless to say the Rizoma 77/011 is not such a bike. This carbon fiber commuting bike is a high-end bicycle from Italy and it evokes style, functionality and design. Priced at $4,700 it features custom components including an interchangeable rear cog that allows it to be ridden as either a single-speed or fixie. It utilizes the Gates Carbon-Drive belt system instead of a traditional chain, so no worries about grease on the legs.

Because at this price the Rizoma 77/011 is a bike you might opt to ride in an Italian suit. Video after the jump

Portable PowerPac

We’ve seen a number of systems that allow a bicycle to charge up devices on the go. These typically feature a dynamo but not Ideso has introduced the PowerPac, which works much like larger stationary bike power systems. This device, which recently found the Red Dot “Best of the Best 2012” Design Award, could be the world’s first product to offer removable power storage.

Previously the systems required a cyclist to ride a stationary bike and act much like a generator. This provided power but it wasn’t very portable. The other solution is to mount the dynamo to the bike and juice up a device while going somewhere. The PowerPac seems to be a little of each, and after riding for about 80 minutes or so the battery is what can travel, offering enough power to be used to fully charge or power a smartphone, computer, tablet, camera or other devices. Safe at any Speed: Ultimate in Custom Bike

The hipster crowd that loves their fixies usually like something unique, and French designer Tristan Kopp doesn’t disappoint with the prodUSER system. Essentially this bike has no tubes – well almost no tubes – but rather features a number of clamps, which can be used with various materials of the user’s choice.

He suggests that everyday branches be used and you’re good to roll. We question this concept because clearly someone could put PVC piping or an old broomstick but we don’t think it would actually be “safe.” Certainly a ride at your risk sort of thing!

Say You Want a Revolights

There is a certain irony in that many bicycle lights are located far higher than those on an automobile, which means that it isn’t able to illuminate the road as well. But Kent Frankovich and Adam Pettler had a revolutionary idea: mount the bike light on the wheel, which in turn put it closer to the ground.

The pair launched a Kickstarter campaign, with the goal to reach $43,500 and eventually raised more than $215,000, and the end result is that cyclists can now buy the new Revolights. Video after the jump

Slip On and Clip In

We’ve seen a trend in cycling shoes that don’t look like cycling shoes, but DZR has introduced the Jetlag Nero, the first and only (at least for now) SPD compatible slip on shoe. The company admits it is the “ultimate companion for the lazy cyclist,” but can you really call anyone who takes the time to have special shoes that clip in lazy?

Even the company admits this is a bit of an oxymoron, but either way we like that it is a slip on, clip in and go sort of shoe. Could be perfect for those who commute to work and don’t want the hassle of bringing multiple pairs of shoes – or worse riding on flat pedals!

“Classic” Riding Helmet

Vancouver-based start up SAHN Helmets says their brain buckets are “about riding. Not racing.” And we like the fact that they take note that not everyone is looking to go out and put in miles on a long training ride. Matt Kelly and Sen-Huy Tan opted to do something different.

Kelly has been creating skateboard and water sport helmets for 10 years at Predator Designs, while partner Tan is an industrial designer. What they have created is a urban lifestyle helmet that evokes a classic motorcycle or even horseback riding helmet. It certainly doesn’t scream bike helmet, but if it protects the helmet we don’t mind that it has some real style too.

California Protected Bikeways Could Benefit From Canadian Research

It is something everyone who rides on bike on city streets or even rural roads has encountered – the car that got a little too close for comfort. But fortunately riders in California will soon get some protection as a CalBike-sponsored law will accelerate the construction of protected bikeways throughout the state.

This also comes as new research from Canada shows that bikeways that provide even a little protection from adjacent vehicle traffic an cut bicyclist injuries a lot. In this way a little goes a long way. The research has shown that the chance of injury can drop by almost 50 percent relative to that of major city streets, when riding on a similar road with a bike lane and no parked cars. When a barrier is added the risk of injury drops for riders by 90 percent. Continue reading California Protected Bikeways Could Benefit From Canadian Research

Bicycle Pack Mule

Horses have an advantage over donkeys – girls like ponies and horse race is the sport of kings. But donkeys are beasts of burden, and just a step up the chain gang from mules. Horses may be good for riding but donkeys are the preferred choice for hauling goods.

This no doubt is what inspired the makers of the Donky Bike – and yes they dropped the “e” in donkey but we don’t know why. What we do know is that the bike looks to be smaller than the average two-wheeled hauler. It is designed to handle well in traffic, but still durable when it comes to hauling goods. It features a unique design that includes two removable racks, one in the front and one in the rear. This puts the design puts the load in the front over the frame not the fork so steering and handling isn’t affected.

The bike features 20-inch BMX wheels, V-brakes, a single piece crankset and 3-speed internal Shimano Nexus hub. This means there is little that can go wrong or be stolen. Since a donkey is something known as an “ass” we’d say this one is a smart ass or one haulin’ ass indeed! Video after the jump

Heated Dutch Treat for Riders

The Dutch love their bicycles, and they don’t stop riding for much. Because many residents don’t own cars they depend on the bikes to get them where they need to go all year round. That means riding in the rain, which we’ve seen firsthand and it didn’t look like fun. But it also means they need to ride in the winter, and that can be dangerous.

But some groups in the Netherlands are looking to solve the problem with heated bike paths. The Dutch Cyclists Union are exploring options to install underground pipes on their pavements to allow bike paths and roads that are used by cyclists to be usable all year. This would make the roads and paths snow free, which could reduce accidents. Continue reading Heated Dutch Treat for Riders
