Making the Case

Alabici has made its case – for larger sized mountain bikes that is. The new Sci’Con MTB AeroComfort travel case can accommodate 26-inch or 29-inch mountain bikes and it features a metal structure to ensure that the bike stays protected while traveling.

Moreover this nylon case, which includes self-healing zippers, manages to combine the flexibility of a soft case with the stability and security of a hardcase, with an AntiShock frame designed to protect the bike inside. Wheels also fit in separate holders within lateral shield cups. The case weighs less than 15 pounds.

Cyclist Radar

Often times when a car hits a cyclist the driver claims that the bicycle came out of nowhere or just wasn’t seen. Imagine if the car had some form of radar that could help detect riders and react! Well, that’s exactly what Volvo has introduced with its update to the pedestrian detection system, which features a full auto brake trigger.

The pedestrian system has been in place since 2010, but now will alert drivers and react to bicycles as well. If an imminent impact with a rider or pedestrian is detected the driver will receive a red warning flash while the car will activate full breaking power. The technology will be available in the V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80 from mid-May 2013. Video after the jump

Brain Bucket Indeed

Helmets are often called brain buckets, but the SMART is actually a cycling helmet that is pretty darn smart. While still under development via an Indiegogo project, its developers hope to create a cycling helmet with an integrated heart rate sensor.

Instead of wearing a heart rate monitor strap this system would provide real time, accurate monitoring via a sensor located in the helmet. This same type of sensors are currently used by fighter pilots and astronauts, and the developers have placed these in a Lazer Genesis helmet. The information gathered by the SMART sensor can be sent in real time to a mobile phone, sports watch or cycling computer via ANT+ and Bluetooth. Video after the jump

Night Watch

Expensive bikes are just magnets for thieves. One solution is to never, ever leave a bike unattended. That isn’t always possible, but fortunately there are those inventors and innovators who are looking at ways to keep our bikes safe.

One such example is the BikeWatch, which is being developed through Indiegogo. This concept device combines an LED light, an alarm and a cable lock. This ensures that riders have a small but durable cable lock for those times when a bike needs to be left for just a minute. If the cable is cut an alarm will sound for 10 minutes at a far more than annoying 105 dB. Attempts to remove the BikeWatch from the bike will get various “warning” alarms as well.

The system also provides a rear “blinky” light that can run for up to 24 hours of continued use. The entire BikeWatch is housed in an IP53 water-resistant housing. The BikeWatch sounds like a good way to protect the bike when a rider can’t actually watch it. Video after the jump

Light Stem

We’ve seen many bicycle stems that claim to be lightweight but there is one new stem that promises to lite it up instead. The StemLite is – as the name suggests – a handlebar stem with a built-in light. This ensures that riders will have a light, which can’t easily be stolen or lost. It also frees riders of needing to worry about a handlebar mounted system, not to mention the bulky battery pack.

Credit this innovation to the advances in LED technology. The StemLite utilizes 10 Nichia LEDs that combined can cast about 500 lumens on high mode. If that’s too much there is also a 300 lumen low mode, and even a flashing mode. The system is powered by just three AA batteries, with up to 12 hours per charge on high and 21 hours on low. The developers are now raising funds to bring out the StemLite via a Kickstarter project.

We’ve said it before, but this sounds like a bright idea. Video after the jump

Truly Lightweight Commuter Bike

There have been many attempts to create a lightweight commuter bike, but few have come close to Germany’s PG-Bikes BlackBraid Fixed. At just 11 pounds it is about as light as they come. This bike features a carbon fiber frame, belt drive and includes just a front brake.

One’s wallets might be a whole lot lighter to ride it however, as this bike reportedly costs around $20,000. Apparently you can put a price on less weight.

Leg Up

We’ve seen many attempts to recycle bikes and build new bikes for those in need, but one young inventor is looking to turn bicycle parts and creating durable, well-functioning prosthetic legs. 19-year old Parker Owen of Mobile, Alabama studied the diagram of a bicycle and created a method to create the “Cycle-Leg,” a low-cost prosthetic that could be used by those who couldn’t afford more expensive prosthetics. He hopes to create between 20-30 of these when he visits Honduras this winter.

League Notes Common Cause With AAA

Cars are often considered the enemy of cyclists but at this week’s 2013 National Bike Summit, hosted by the League of American Bicyclists the advocacy group noted that it found common ground with the AAA – the Automobile Association of America.

“At first glance, it may seem surprising that AAA would be a leading voice at the National Bike Summit, one of the biggest bicycle advocacy events of the year,” said League President, Andy Clarke. “But AAA has become an important partner in our work to raise awareness about the benefits of biking, improve the safety of cyclists, and promote and protect the rights and responsibilities of all road users.”

To this end the AAA has debuted a new Share the Road Public Service Announcement (PSA) that highlights the dual identity of many road users: driver and cyclists. Hopefully this will result in real sharing of the road and mutual respect from both sides. Video after the jump

Blinder Leading the Rider

Australian bike light maker Knog has produced many taillights to allow bikers to be seen, but now the company is introducing the Blinder Road lights, which deliver a 200 lumen front beam that lets riders see where the are going. The company is also upping the taillights with a new 70 lumen strobe.

The new lights are compact, USB rechargeable and waterproof and will have an integrated silicone package with an anodized aluminum face. While 200 lumens will be enough for the Blinder to light the way it proves lighting the way doesn’t need to be blinding.

BMC Offers Golden Lamborghini Bike

While it is made of carbon fiber the BMC Impec Lamborghini 50th Anniversary Edition road bike is pure gold. This specially made bike will be one of many creations that we expect to see this year from the legendary Italian auto maker. And while many bike companies may claim to be rolling out a limited edition, this one is truly “limited” as in to just three – each with a £3.1million price tag and each is already sold.

Come to think of it at that price this means the bike is worth more per ounce than actual gold!

Road Wear

Cycling attire looks great when you’re riding a bike. However, as we’ve long noted what might look good on the bike looks anything but good off the bike, and utterly inappropriate at work. While cycling shorts have really no place at the office, neither does a team jersey.

We’ve seen some efforts to make office friendly shoes and now Giro’s New Road Apparel is a line of commuter garb that will be fine for the work place beyond casual Friday. This line features Merino wool, which is breathable and stretchy, and a design that will be good on the bike and good on the office. The lineup includes different layers as well so you can be sure to dress appropriately as you ride to work.

Wrench Award

When something goes wrong with a bike most of us take it to the shop. Someone at the shop usually then brings it in the back and we pick up the bike. We thank the guy who rolls it out but often the unsung “hero” is the bike mechanic. In many shops we never see that guy or gal.

But now WD-40 BIKE has announced a “Wrench of the Month Program,” which is intended to shine a spotlight on the men and women behind the scenes at bicycle retailers nationwide. This program is there to applaud those who repair, assemble, mend or otherwise tend to our bikes. Kudos to them and kudos to WD 40 for launching this program, which let riders nominate their favorite mechanics online!
