Ride in the Peloton From Home

Peloton-BikeBeing able to go the distance in the peloton is what sets apart a rider, but now the Peloton Bike will allow riders of all levels to put in the miles and do so from the living room. This indoor cycling trainer delivers both live and on-demand indoor cycling classes, along with competition and even video chats.

The training bike is now being developed through a Kickstarter project, and the best part of about putting in the miles on this bike is that it means you’ll never be dropped by the group and have to ride home alone. Video after the jump

Made in America: Pedal Pushers’ Jersey Speaks the Truth

Pedal-PushersWith the words “Know Your Enemy NYC” this cycling jersey from Pedal Pushers is one we’d say has a hardcore look to it. Anyone who has ridden the mean streets of Sixth Avenue pre-bike lanes can understand this one. While New York City may be far more bike friendly, it still isn’t for the faint of heart. And while this one was made in California we still see it has that Big Apple attitude.

This jersey is for those who can handle a bit of traffic.

From Gizmodo: 100 Years of Tour de France Bikes Map the Evolution of Cycling
There are few professional sports as closely bound to technology as cycling. A bike isn’t just equipment, as skiis or a tennis racket might be—it’s a partner in a symbiotic relationship between the machine and athlete. And it’s remarkable to see how drastically certain parts of that machine have changed in the last century, while others have stayed largely the same. Levi Continues to Roll

LeviEarlier this year we noted that Levi had introduced jeans – the Levi 511 Commuter versions – that were made for cycling. The apparel maker continues to roll out new products for cycling in its “Commuter” line, which feature performance fabric and functional details. These include the 511 jeans, t-shirts (including the two above), as well as jackets, shorts, and pants.

Portable Pump

Air-SmithA “word smith” is someone who is often just full of hot air, but the Air Smith ALX pump from Planet Bike is actually something that put a lot of air in a bike tire, yet fit securely in a pocket. It features a rotating valve head and adapter that converts it to presta mode.

As with most portable mini-pumps you’ll still probably be pumping for a while to get the tire filled, but it does beat walking home. However this one offers a rubber hose that extends from the front making that endless pumping a little easier.

POC Goes to the Road

POCLast year POC made a big impact with its revolutionary award-winning ski and snowboard helmets and more recently with its mountain bike helmets. This year the company is looking to get on the road with new cycling helmets, apparel and eyewear lines. While snow sports sales now account for 80 percent of POC’s business the company is looking to divide its business between cycling and snow sports – likely to be more of a year round business.

POC will debut its new product lines at this year’s Eurobike and Interbike trade shows.

Made in America: Ticket to Transfer

TransferCarrying gear to a race can be tricky. It is bad enough to forget something on a training ride, but forgetting anything on race day is a disaster. The Inside Line Equipment Transfer bag, which can hold 21 liters of gear, will ensure that racers don’t have to sweat the small details because everything you might need fits in this one bag.

The bag is made in the USA of XPAC sailcloth and has seven storage compartments, with entry through the sides or the top. There is even an elastic exterior pocket for a helmet and a drawstring sleeve inside for dirty laundry and shoes while side pockets provide a place just for water bottles. This bag also offers ergonomic shoulder straps with a sternum strap.

Marin County Looks to Help Women Cyclists

RepairWhile some mass retailers still sell “girl’s bikes,” women cyclists often have to do with a male-dominated cycling world. To this end the Marin County Bicycle Coalition this year looked to ensure that women aren’t left by the side of the road. This year it introduced a “Women on Wheels” series, with classes aimed at helping female riders increase their confidence and develop skills to enhance their enjoyment of cycling.

The program is wrapping up this weekend, but hopefully the club will roll it out again in 2014.

Pulp Nonfiction

Paper-Pulp-HelmetBike sharing is a great way to get around a city without actually owning a bike. The problem is that when using a shared bike things like helmets aren’t exactly provided. The idea of “shared” helmets are in development, but these require sanitization after each use.

The Paper Pulp Helmet offers another solution, which its creators are looking to bring to market. While still in the concept stage the Paper Pulp Helmet was developed by Royal College Of Art in London graduates Tom Gottelier, Bobby Petersen, and Ed Thomas. These helmets can be made from newspapers collected from around the public transport network in London. These discarded papers are mixed with water to create a pulp, which in turn an organic element is added. Pigment is added to help differentiate the size.

The mixture is vacuum-formed into a shape, heated and then left to dry. The result is a simply helmet that can be reused or recycled. More importantly it can be sold for around £1 each (US$1.50), thus providing an expensive brain bucket for riders. Video after the jump

Foldable Brain Bucket

CLOSCAWe’ve seen a few concepts in foldable bike helmets, but the CLOSCA, which is now wrapping up a Kickstarter project, offers a little style along with functionality. While it likely won’t provide the same level of protection as a typical road or mountain bike helmet, for commuters who might otherwise not don a helmet this could go a long way at helping ensure that the rider’s head is indeed covered!
