The Lying King Comes to Home Video
In 2009, Gibney was given unprecedented access to both the Tour de France and Armstrong, one of the most prominent figures in sports, to document the athlete’s return to cycling following his 2005 retirement. However, the story ended up being much more than a comeback tale. After years of denying allegations of doping and condemning ex-cyclists who were guilty of using performance-enhancing drugs, Armstrong became the center of a federal criminal investigation and an investigation by the US Anti-Doping Agency. As a result, the “ultimate comeback story” came to a halt.
Given this new information, the filmmakers decided that instead of chronicling the athlete’s comeback, The Armstrong Lie would be filled with new interviews from Armstrong himself, his former teammates, as well as cycling experts, emerging as an insider’s view and chronicle of Armstrong’s collapse.
The Blu-ray and DVD include exclusive commentary from the Director, as well as a Q&A with Gibney, Frank Marshall, Bill Strickland, Jonathan Vaughters and Betsy Andreu. Both releases also come with more than 40 minutes of deleted scenes.
Ride for Adventure
We know that many people ride for the fun of it, while others use the bicycle as a commuting tool. However the Adventure Cycling Association has seen its membership hit an all-time high of 46,724 members last year.
“Adventure Cycling continues to benefit from the surge of global interest in bicycle travel,” said Jim Sayer, executive director of the organization. “We are being asked by cities, states, and provinces all over North America how they can attract more bicycle tourism and we’re hearing from many businesses that want to get more involved in this thriving sector.”
Why not make a bike part of your adventure this year.

Cargo Bike Race in Rio Needs Crowdfunding
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil deliveries don’t happen on trucks, most goods are delivered via cargo bikes. The riders get little recognition though they keep the vibrant city thriving. This mirrors the scenario in Copenhagen 80 years ago, and a race for those who ride cargo bikes brought the riders into the spotlight. Now one race organizer is hoping to get his plans to organize a race for cargo bike riders in Rio off the ground. Continue reading Cargo Bike Race in Rio Needs Crowdfunding
Touching a Nerve
Booq has touched a nerve so to speak with its new Boa nerve messenger bag. It features water-repellent 1680 denier ballistic nylon exterior that will protect the value contents inside. With intelligently designed pocket-packed interior everything will have its proper place during a daily commute to work by bicycle – or just a ride on the subway. The interior is further lined with herringbone nylon to optimize storage space and keep gear from getting scratched, while a magnetic strap system shifts from a loose to secure fit in a cinch, so you won’t feel a pinched nerve from having this pack on your back.
DeFeet Warms the Toes with Thermeator Winter Cycling Socks
You can wear all of the appropriate clothing to arm yourself against the cold, but if your feet are cold, it’s all lost. That’s why we’re excited to see the new Thermeator cycling socks from DeFeet. The Thermeator sock is lighter in weight than knit socks, and actually claims to be 30 percent lighter than comparable merino wool socks. It has a faster drying rate, and quickly wicks moisture away from your feet. DeFeet says the Thermeator is flexible and thrives in cold, damp climates. While we will use these on any winter rides, we may take a few more opportunities to wear these warming socks this winter. Such as when we go for a hike, shovel the driveway, or even just go out to the store.

With Cat-Like Eyes
Gilbert and Sullivan suggested that pirates – specifically the Pirates of Penzance – may have had “Cat Like Tread” but CatEye is providing a cycling light for those who have eyes that aren’t quite as good as our feline friends. The Padrone computer is for those riders with aging eyes and provides larger numbers.
In addition it has seven basic functions that include current-, average- and maximum-speed, as well as trip distance, total distance, elapsed time and clock.
One Stoopidtall Bike
Why do people climb mountains? As the story goes because they’re there; and perhaps a similar answer could be given by Richie Trimble who rides the talles bike we’ve seen. He is waiting to hear from the Guinness Book or Records to claim that he rides the world’s tallest bike, which is still pending. He took a bike that was 20 feet, 2.5 inches off the ground. That is considerably higher than the 14.5 foot Stoopidtall bike he rode in April.
Looking to best his own record he went even higher just after Christmas. It reportedly took him four days to build it and then he climbed up and on the 275 bike, which is fittingly known as the Stoopidtaller.

Crafty Gloves
When cycling in the winter you need to have your hands covered but still have ample dexterity in the digitals. Craft has you – or rather your hands covered – with its line of new Hybrid Winter Glove that is actually a hybrid of a glove and mitten.
The glove is made of warm yet stretchable polyester with a brushed interior that keeps the fingers warm yet still allows you to use a touchscreen device such as a smartphone. When the wind picks up or the temperatures drop you can add a waterproof mitten cover to the mix.
CES: Clip it On
Bracketon has introduced its new GoPro-friendly camera mounts at this week’s International CES in Las Vegas. These include the Vented Helmet Strap, which can attach to almost every helmet on the market. The strap’s ball joints allows for a complete 360-degree rotation, so riders can capture the experience from any direction.
For those who take adventure in their hearts, the Xventure Chest Harness secures a GoPro camera safely to the torso to capture any excursions. This system features two durable side clips on either side for easy mounting and removal, along with an adjustable shoulder and side strap, making this harness a one-size-fits-most accessory.
The new Xventure Xlip Mount is also compatible with any GoPro camera and it allows any action camera to be clipped on, while the 360-degree rotation and adjustable neck allows users to take photos from almost any degree. The smooth, rubberized clamp makes it easy to attach to almost any stable surface.
Do You Believe in Magnic?
We have seen a lot of health related gadgets and gizmos at CES this week, but one that might not be here yet is the Magnic Light iC, a contractless bicycle dynamo. Currently the developers are looking to bring it out via a Kickstarter project.
The concept to this one is to power a 60g light unit for bicycles without batteries and without direct contact to the wheels. It utilizes eddy current technology where energy is drawn from the rotating wheel but without physical contact and thus without friction. This means the rider could power up the light and not face added resistance in the process. We’ll be sure to watch where this one heads next. Video after the jump
