Bike Offers USB Port For Device Charging

Silver Back Stark 1 USB BikeIf you bring a camera, mobile phone, MP3 player or other electronic device on a long ride chances are it could end up out of juice before you do. But now Silverback is offering a way to use pedal power to power up your digital devices. The German bicycle company has added a USB port, powered by a dynamo hub, to its Starke 1 and 2 models.

The USB port is located in the head tube of the nickel alloy frame bicycles, which also feature Shimano components including front and rear hydraulic disc brakes. The dynamo hub also provides power to the bikes’ lights, while the Starke 1 even features an integrated electric motor that provides pedal assist.

The only drawback so far seems that devices can only be powered when the dynamo isn’t being used. So if you were hoping to do some riding to power up the mobile phone, or to listen to some tunes while resting your legs you might be out of luck. But it is still a good way to juice up your devices. The Silverback cycles will be ready to roll as part of the company’s 2012 line up.

iPhone Bike Computer Tackles Dead Battery Issue

There is one big reason that the iPhone isn’t the most ideal cycling computer – the longevity of the battery. While there are seemingly limitless apps for the iPhone related to fitness, the handset probably won’t go the distance. Typically the phone will give out before a lot of riders, especially those who are serious enough to take advantage of the advanced features the smartphone offers as a training monitor, especially the handset’s GPS mode.

However, Wahoo Fitness and Heart Rate Watch Company have come up with a solution, namely an auxiliary battery pack. It is a simple solution, but one that is key to turning the iPhone into a true bike computer. This extra juice can provide up to triple the run time for the smartphone. The drawback is that it does add up in the weight category when you factor in the phone, case and auxiliary battery. This comes in at about 1.25 pounds, which is quite hefty compared to the two ounces of standalone devices.

An Elegant PF30 Single Speed Solution

Eccentric bottom brackets (EBB) have been used for years on single speed bikes to make the job of tensioning the chain easier than using horizontal rear dropouts. This solution allows the use of vertical dropouts in the frame and a quick release skewer to secure the rear wheel – a feature that anyone who has been miles away from home with a flat, but no wrench to remove the wheel would appreciate. With the advent of the oversized PressFit-30 (PF30) bottom bracket shell used in all types of bikes to provide a stiffer, more efficient power transfer from the pedal to the rear wheel has lead to an unexpected aftermarket part for those wanting a single speed bike – the Eccentric 46 Bottom Bracket from Problem Solvers of Bloomington, Minnesota.

Recyclebank Offers Reward for Biking and Walking

It shouldn’t have to come to this, rewarding people for biking and walking – since better fitness should be the reward itself, but Recyclebank, a company that already rewards people for taking everyday green actions with discounts and deals from local and national businesses, announced last week a partnership with Transport for London to develop a program to reward people for cycling and walking in London.

This program incentivizes people to cycle or walk in the British Capital to help reduce pollution, ease congestion and boost fitness among Londoners. Members will collect points for every journey they make by bike or on foot; these points will be redeemable for a growing range of offers and discounts from Recyclebank reward partners.

This rewards program is another example of many initiatives that the Mayor of London and TfL have taken to build and improve public paths and parks, and the many other initiatives that make up the city’s bicycle rental program, launched in 2010.

“Walking and cycling are the healthiest and greenest ways to travel and we are truly inspired by the excellent work TfL has done to encourage people to make greener transportation choices in London. We are excited to partner with TfL and look forward to motivating Londoners to take greener actions,” said Jonathan Hsu, CEO of Recyclebank. “Our hope is that this program becomes something that other cities can emulate to reduce their environmental footprint, realizing the collective impact of individual green actions.”

The program is being delivered at no cost to TfL and will be free to join for anyone who cycles or walks in London. We think it is a good way to get people to make that first step – and hopefully many to follow.

Hands On: Bollé Tempest with Modulator Lenses

Click image for a closer view

Since the early 1990s, I have been an avid user of the Oakley Mumbo and M-frames with the Sweep lenses for all forms of cycling. They have protected my eyes from tree branches, sun, snow, mud, rocks, flying insects and anything else thrown my way. I never ride without them. They fit my head well and provide excellent coverage keeping the wind out of my eyes during fast descents. I have tried many other types of glasses and yet I keep grabbing my M-frames every time I ride… until now.

At Interbike this year, there were numerous eyewear companies and a number showing off photochromic lenses. Photochromic lenses darken when exposed to ultraviolet rays (UV) and fade back to lighter tint in low light areas or indoors. Shortly after the show, I received a pair of the Bollé Tempest glasses with their version of a photochromic lens, the Modulator, to try myself.

Hit the Traill for Winter

Winter riding means bundling up and that begins with a solid base layer. While it might sound like all you need is a heavy sweat shirt that could result in you overheating, then sweating and then getting chilled when you reduce your effort. The key to a good base layer is one that won’t make you too warm but won’t leave you cold either.

The Nalini Traill is just the sort of fitness under garment that will help keep you warm and dry. The jersey features a variable knit technology, with sections allowing for ventilation so you don’t get too heated up, while other sections will still keep your body warm. The long sleeved jersey is made of Meryl Actisystem so that it is lightweight, snug and warming. And while it is very tight fitting jersey it has enough give so that you don’t feel like you’re being compressed by it. It is the sort of base layer that will let you put in your ride and return to home base feeling warm and dry even in the dead of winter.

LED Lite Up the Night For Biking

Riding a bike at night has numerous hazards, namely that fact that drivers can’t see them. But now a start up from Utah father and son team Rick and Brandon Smith might add some light to the night. LED by Lite essentially consists of four strips of silicone-encased LED bulbs, where two mount to the front fork and two to the rear. Following the tradition of car lights it is meant for white in the front and red in the back, but unlike car lights these can be seen from 360 degrees.

All four strips are waterproof and are designed to be removed and reinstalled in just seconds thanks to the QAD (Quickly Attaching and Detaching) System. The lights are powered by a BlackBox12-volt lithium-ion battery pack, which can be charged with a wall adapter or from a computer via a micro USB cord.

WingmanHD Video Camera Catches the Action

Athletes are capturing some amazing video. Biking on the trails; catching waves; skating some big tricks. Capturing the action while in motion, rather than filming when a friend rides by from a stationary position, adds to the authenticity of the video. It also requires some specialized equipment. That doesn’t mean, however, that you need to spend a lot of money, or have a film degree, to pull off some amazing video.

Delkin Devices just released the WingmanHD, a waterproof, 3-ounce action camera. The company claims the HD camera capable of shooting 1080p video is the lightest on the market at 3-ounces. The comparable Contour HD helmet camera weighs 4.3 ounces, as listed on Amazon.com. The weight for the newly released GoPro HD Hero2 camera was difficult to find.

The WingmanHD is powerful with a 1.5-inch LCD screen; 3x digital zoom and universal mounting system. The screen allows you to view what the action (if the camera is positioned where you can see it) and also has a playback mode so you can review video even before you get back to your computer. The camera comes with an 8 GB MicroSD Memory Card, rechargeable battery that provides 2.5 hours of recording time, a helmet mount, vented helmet mount, bar mount, wall and auto charger, a pwer and data USB cable, component cable, wrist strap and user guide. Garmin Enters ANT+ Community with Garmin Fit App, Adapter

Garmin excels in the sports and fitness category with devices that track distance, speed, heart rate and other measures of a workout. Now it’s come to market with an ANT+ adapter for the iPhone, and companion app on iPhone and Android devices. We hope the Android adapter will soon follow so we can track our workouts on our device of choice.

The Garmin Fit app lets users track metrics such as speed, pace, distance, time, calories, heart rate and cadence. Some of these metrics require connectivity to devices beyond the phone. Cadence and heart rate, for instance, require a pod on the bike and chest strap, respectively. These are measured with companion Garmin devices, and sent wirelessly via the ANT+ adapter to the iPhone. Continue reading Garmin Enters ANT+ Community with Garmin Fit App, Adapter

Super Cooper Bicycle

Britain’s Mini-Cooper (technically now German as it is owned by BMW) has been known for its stylish compact cars, but in recent years the company has also shifted gears and followed the wheels of high-performance auto brands such as BMW and Porsche by rolling out a line of bicycles! The Cooper Bikes aren’t meant to be race machines, but instead are aimed at the urban commuters, with sleek Reynolds steel frames.

In total Cooper Bikes has introduced eight models in three groups, and these feature quality parts including Sturmey Archer cranks, Brooks leather saddles and Tektro rim brakes. Three of the four T100 bikes are designed as single speeds with freewheels but feature flip-flop rear hubs for those who like the fixed gear configuration; while Zandvoort model features a 3-speed Sturmy Archer rear hub transmission. The company also has 5-speed models, but it is the T100 Sebring (pictured) that has caught our eyes. This is a Mini with me in mind.
