Danish Cargo Bike Ready to Roll

Butchers-&-BicyclesWhile the Dutch are often associated with cargo bikes their cousins to the north know a thing or two about bicycles as well. Denmark’s Butchers & Bicycles has created the Mk1 cargo bike that can handle corners better than most. The bike is actually designed to “lean” in when making a turn, which is something that will no doubt turn heads as well.

The Mk1 features the designer’s proprietary Balance Point Tilting system along with a powder coated T6 aluminum frame, an infinitely-variable NuVinci N360 planetary hub transmission, an ABUS frame lock, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes on all three wheels, and Schwalbe puncture-proof 20- and 26-inch tires. The bike also utilizes an ABS cargo box, which has a front access door along with mounts for children car seats. It has a maximum load capacity of 100 kg (220.5 lb), so this thing can probably haul as much as the rider’s can handle. Continue reading Danish Cargo Bike Ready to Roll

Made in America: Tie One On

KhordzIf you’re going to tie one on better to tie it on with the Khordz Hand Tied Mug, a multi-purpose line of drinkware. These customizable mugs are designed to replace single-use cups and are insulated with 25 feet of hand tied paracord, which is used as the sleeve and handle. It is suitable for a multitude of tasks; from use as a snare trap to hanging a hammock.

The 16 ounce food-grade, heat-resistant glass jar is designed to be easy to clean. The mugs are made in America, and the entire package is assembled here as well. The designers are looking to Indiegogo to snare some interest and mass produce the Khordz Hand Tied Mugs.

The World of Atlas

AtlasThe developers of the Atlas are looking to Indiegogo to bring out what they believe is the first fitness tracker that tracks all aspects of a workout. It can identify your exercise, count reps, calculate the calories you burn and even evaluate your form. The developers noted on the Indiegogo site that “Atlas is packed with a suite of inertial sensors, similar to those used in smartphones. The Atlas sensors see your movement in a 3D trajectory and identify the specific motion fingerprint of each exercise you’re doing. Atlas then sifts through a sea of data and picks out the pearls that are valuable to you.”

During and following workouts it can highlight the muscle groups you’ve focused on, and then suggest where to go next. Video after the jump

Weekend Reading List (01.19.2014): Grab On, Hub Bub, Mill Run

Grab On

From GearJunkie:’Slob’ To Chicken Salad… Snowboarding Grab Terms (on one handy chart)
Oh the colorful dialect of the park and pipe world! Thankfully, we have diagrams to help. I suppose some of these are dated as the language evolves as fast as the sport of snowboarding itself, but this gem of a diagram from Wikipedia might help those watching the Olympic pipe competition understand the terminology…a bit. One Stoopidtall Bike

StoopidtallerWhy do people climb mountains? As the story goes because they’re there; and perhaps a similar answer could be given by Richie Trimble who rides the talles bike we’ve seen. He is waiting to hear from the Guinness Book or Records to claim that he rides the world’s tallest bike, which is still pending. He took a bike that was 20 feet, 2.5 inches off the ground. That is considerably higher than the 14.5 foot Stoopidtall bike he rode in April.

Looking to best his own record he went even higher just after Christmas. It reportedly took him four days to build it and then he climbed up and on the 275 bike, which is fittingly known as the Stoopidtaller.

CES: Get On and E-Go

E-Go-CruiserAt CES this week some may have been possessed to skate (as the 1980s punk rock anthem once proclaimed), and took a ride on the E-Go Cruiser, the world’s lightest electric longboard at just 13.9 pounds. It is powered by one of the most powerful yet high capacity batteries, which allows users to travel 18 miles on a single charge.

The company claims the E-Go Cruiser is safe for beginners or experienced boarders, and provides an attractive alternative to urban transportation. Video after the jump

Do You Believe in Magnic?

Magnic-Light-iCWe have seen a lot of health related gadgets and gizmos at CES this week, but one that might not be here yet is the Magnic Light iC, a contractless bicycle dynamo. Currently the developers are looking to bring it out via a Kickstarter project.

The concept to this one is to power a 60g light unit for bicycles without batteries and without direct contact to the wheels. It utilizes eddy current technology where energy is drawn from the rotating wheel but without physical contact and thus without friction. This means the rider could power up the light and not face added resistance in the process. We’ll be sure to watch where this one heads next. Video after the jump

CES: Log Jam

FootLoggerThis week at CES a lot of attendees will be forced to do a lot of walking. That’s a good thing as a quick glance around the show suggests a bit of indulging from the holidays and a bit more than a bit of bulging. Walking is a rather simple way to stay healthy, but knowing if you walked enough can be a problem. This is where the FootLoggers insoles come into play. These utilize a three-axis accelerometer along with eight pressure points to determine distance walks. Knowing is the first step in setting goals that will get wearers on their way to better fitness.

You Pump iPUMP

iPUMPHitting the road without a plan for a flat tire is almost like asking to ruin the ride and perhaps the day. If you don’t want to lug around a large pump and don’t care for the one-shot functionality of those CO2 cartridges, the iPUMP might be for you. It features a carbon fiber body and Presta connector so it can pump you up – or at least your tire – quickly and won’t take up too much room in a pack or pocket.

The iPUMP is being developed through a Kickstarter project and apparently a lot of people are pumped up. More than 400 people have helped it go way past the developer’s $10,000 goal. Video after the jump

Make Your Personal Imprint

Imprint-GripWhile gloves can fit many hands, the truth is hands are fairly unique. The designers behind the Imprint Grips saw this and have designed a specially mountain bike grip that had be truly customized. The goal here is a grip that provides the maximum contact between the hand and the bike, which means the contact is supported evenly and thus removes all the high pressure points.

These are designed to be molded in hot water, and once customized will provide vibration damping that will provide a tight grip in all conditions. In addition to a truly custom fit these also offer a diamond pattern that further helps ensure a good feel while riding. The grips, which are now being developed via a Kickstarter campaign, are highly durable and the life is maximized by the increased contact area. This could be time to get a grip! Ride in the Sky

SkyCycleThe roads of London can be dangerous for cycling, but the designers have Foster + Partners have a solution: ride in the sky! Instead of building new roads for cars, the firm along with Space Syntax has looked to develop the SkyCycle, which could follow existing suburban railway corridors and provide bicycle only roads to ride throughout London. By following the rail network this could provide more than 220 kilometers of car-free cycle route, which could be accessed via more than 200 entrance points. Each route could accommodate 12,000 cyclists per hour and improve journey times by as much as 29 minutes.

No Menace to This Phantom

Phantom-FramesThere are plenty of methods for putting lights on bikes to help younger riders be seen at night, but instead of trying to add lights to the frame, the designers of Phantom Frames are looking to light up the bike. The concept, which is being developed via a Kickstarter project that ends today, looks to have a frame that is normal looking during the day – but at night it can’t be missed.

The concept came to light when Ken Spaulding in Santa Ana, California needed to replace his son’s rear bike light. When his son suggested why couldn’t the whole bike light up instead Ken decided to build one. The result was a series of designs including a polycarbonate frame filled with LEDs that resulted in the first prototype. Now Ken and his boy Jack are looking to bring their bright idea to the masses. Video after the jump
