Hear the earHero

Wearing headphones can help make a workout more enjoyable, and in turn make you want to go longer and even harder. The problem is that wearing headphones when running or worse cycling on the road can limit the ability to hear traffic. But the earHero has come to the rescue

This earphone system is designed to allow users to hear the world around them, while still providing reasonable sound quality to the listener. It was designed by audiologist Matt Murphy, and works by not actually blocking the ear canal – so you can wear these and hear that car approach. Continue reading Hear the earHero

Phiaton PS 20 Headset Gives You Great Sound Wirelessly

While everything around us seems to be going wireless, when it comes to headphones most are us are still tethered. Anyone who uses headphones during a workout or activity knows how cumbersome they can be when they’re flailing around. New wireless technologies like Bluetooth, however, have allowed headphone manufacturers to cut the cord. One such product is the Phiaton PS 20 BT Stereo Headset ($149), a pair on in-ear headphones that are Bluetooth 3.0 compatible, which provides amazing sound quality, according to Phiaton.

When paired with your phone you can answer calls without removing them; you can pair up to eight devices at once, while using two of them simultaneously. Other features include the “Echo-Off” noise reduction; 14.3mm drivers that Phiaton says produces pure and accurate sound; a “half in-ear” design that’s ergonomic, and offers “excellent bass response of in-ear style buds with the crystal clear high frequency response of open-ear style earphones”; “MaxBass” technology with a dual-chamber structure to reduce or eliminate vibration and echo; and calling time of 6 hours, music-playing time of 6 hours, and 250 hours of standby time.

Heart Rate Teller

How important is information to an athlete? Today knowing details like heart rate and recovery during training can make all the difference in performance when it comes time to compete. Runners have long been told not to turn their heads as they break stride, but given the vast amount of information on the wrist it is sometimes worth taking the eyes off the course to keep the eyes on the prize.

Cyclists meanwhile compete with all sorts of information including heart rate, power output, distance traveled and much more on handlebar mounted devices. But swimmers are pretty much left in the deep end when it comes to getting the most basic information. That is about to change as the Swimmer’s Talking Heart Rate Monitor can provide that heart rate through audible cues. Additional images

eers for the Ears

At times it might seem as if comfortable and sound quality are mutually exclusive with earbubs, but Sonomax Technologies hopes to change that perception with its new PCS-150 and PCS-250 custom-fit earphones that will arrive next month. These promise to offer low profile, ergonomically shaped design and ear loop that comfortably cradles the back of the ear, while providing a channel for the wire from the sound source, as well as assisting the user in proper insertion and removal.

Designed for active users and fitness enthusiasts, the PCS-150 eers utilize a tuned dynamic speaker to deliver enhanced bass response through bass reflex technology.

And in addition to sounding good for music, both models will offer users the ability to answer calls through a smartphone. Continue reading eers for the Ears

The PMX 680 Headphones Are Good Enough for Karl Meltzer

While not exactly brand new, this week Sennheiser let it be known that ultrarunner Karl Meltzer tones up and tunes out with the Sennheiser/adidas PMX 680 Sport headphones. There are a lot of audio choices out there, but Sennheiser has a point. If Meltzer, who regularly runs 100-mile ultra-marathons, uses the headphones then they probably are something the rest of us might consider.

According to Sennheiser Meltzer runs two to three hours with music playing, and says he appreciates the support of the neckband, which also includes a reflector at the back to provide a little safety.

The PMX 680 also allows him to make volume adjustments without stopping or reaching for his audio player. He can adjust the volume from a clip on his shirt. So for those looking for a new set of headphones, think of it this way, if it works for Karl Meltzer it probably is good enough for the rest of us!

Years

They say you can learn a lot about the rings in a tree trunk. In the video above a record player plays slices of wood. Year ring data is translated into music.

This music — which sounds like a moody piano soundtrack for a existentialist movie about a rainy day — is made by slicing a tree in cross-section, placing it on a turntable, and using a tone-arm with a PlayStation Eye Camera in the head. Output is processed through Ableton Live. It’s called Years, and it was created by Bartholomäus Traubeck. Continue reading Thursday Reading List (1/19/2012)

Discussion on How Polar Polyester and Fleece is Made

Polar Fleece was created in the 1970s. Sometime later its production became mostly from recycled materials. While we’ve seen TV shows and read articles about the fabric’s construction, it’s still a interesting to learn how oil, or a soda bottle, becomes a fuzzy, warm fabric.
