Go Back to Berkeley to Get Low Down

They say you can’t go home again, and while we don’t know what they mean or who even “they” might be, we do know that you can get Back-To-Berkeley and even do so down low, or rather Back-To-Berkley Low Down via a trip to North Face.

The outdoor retailer is offering these hiking shoes, which could allow you to walk back home or to the back woods. These feature retro looks, but include some current technology, such as waterproof suede, polyurethane coated ballistic mesh upper and inner HydroSeal waterproof membrane liner, PrimaLoft Eco insulation and Winter Grip rubber outsoles. There are also IcePick temperature-sensitive lugs. Continue reading Go Back to Berkeley to Get Low Down

Shoes Fit for Ninja

Wear these in a running race and your competitors shouldn’t hear you coming, but you’d probably have to hone up your ninja skills. However, if you just want to look like the Japanese assassins the shoes will do the job. The Zemgear 360 Ninja Split-Toe Running Shoes offer the barefoot running experience while still keeping your feet covered. These feature a split-toe design (as the name suggests), a phylon outsole, tech bands to provide greater stability and a round-toe pattern for increased flex. The Gecko-Grip rubber pods will provide plenty of traction as well, and these weigh in at just 2.5 ounces. And they look pretty stylish as well.

So maybe those ninjas were on to something when they were taking out Japanese samurai all those years ago. Sword and throwing stars not recommended.

Re-Use for Broken Surfboards

The problem with many fitness and athletic products is that there is little that can be done with the material once it breaks. Some products can be recycled – such as metal bicycle frames – but all too often the broken parts and equipment is simply abandoned or tossed in the trash. For surfers this is a problem because even when thrown in the trash broken boards can end up as floating garbage.

But Southern California residents Ed Lewis and Kipp Denslow came up with another solution. They’re taking old and broken surfboards to create handplanes, essentially miniature boards that bodysurfers can strap onto their hands while catching waves. They’ve created a new company, dubbed Enjoy Handplanes, as well to sell their upcycled products and as a way to spread the word that a broken board shouldn’t mean the end of the materials usefulness.

Move Over Tubeless Tires – The Airless Tire is on the Way

httpv://youtu.be/v9SWIsY8rzQ

During World War II bicycles were widely used by the various military forces, but because of rubber shortages various solutions were considered as alternatives when the tires went flat. The Japanese simply gave up the rubber and its soldiers rode their bikes on the rims.

Energy Return Wheel likely has a far better solution, one that could be quite revolutionary. It is developing an airless mountain bike tire that would use rubber or alloy structures in place of air chamber. This could provide a bounce effect that could even increase acceleration.

There might be some drawbacks to address, such as how to keep mud, rocks and other debris from entering the inside of the tire, but this could be a great way to ensure that you won’t get a flat tire on the trails!

Backpack Adds Some Light

Torch clearly likes to put lights on things. Early this year we noted that the company had designed a helmet with a built in light, and now comes the Torch FLUX backpack, which also features an integrated LED light. This light can run for two to five hours, depending on whether it is used for steady or flash modes, and it features a USB connect for easy recharging.

The LED unit is also removable and can be mounted directly to a bike seat post for those times when a bag isn’t needed. The bag should be able to endure the daily commute with ease, as it is made of 1,000 denier Cordura nylon, and features a waterproof vinyl-coated polyester lining.

Under Armour Offers Ankle Support

In Greek mythology Achilles was invulnerable in all his body except his heel – and as the Ancient Greeks opted to not to wear armor on their feet this proved to be a fatal flaw for the seemingly invincible warrior. But athletes today wear specialty shoes to increase performance and protect against injury. Fittingly there is even a type of athletic armor for the feet, as Under Armour has introduced a new basketball shoe called the UA Charge. Continue reading Under Armour Offers Ankle Support

ROAM2 Wherever You Want

This month GoPro announced a new action camera, and that follows introductions into the category by Sony and JVC. Not to be left behind Contour has announced its ROAM2 camera, which it proclaims to be the simplest camera on the market. It offers instant on-record, and the frame rate has been up to 60fps at 720p. It can record at 1080p at 30fps as well.

The ROAM2 features two lasers on the side of the 170-degree wide angle lens to make what is being recorded. This is a novel alternative to a view finder and for those who are engaged in some activity like downhill snowboarding or mountain biking it might be a good way to know what’s in the shot. The ROAM2 is waterproof to one meter without separate housing, so it can handle a little water for sure. Continue reading ROAM2 Wherever You Want

Made in America: Light & Motion It Up

We’ve seen a lot of bike lights, and other gimmicky methods to light up a bike but sometimes simple is what it is all about. The new Light & Motion Taz offers 1,200 Lumens that will truly light the way for those riding when the sun isn’t shinning. This American made light is designed as a “crossover” model, so it can be used for mountain bikes as well as street bikes.

It is simple in that it features no cables, and instead contains the batter inside – making it easy for commuters who lock the bike outside during the day. It features multiple settings and can run at the full 1,200lm for 90minutes, or provide a respectable 600lm for three hours. At 300lm it can run constant for six hours, pulse for nine or flash for 18 hours. And it can get fully charged in about four hours.

Made in America: Made in the Mountains

With a name like American Mountain Co. could its products be made anywhere else but in America? The company is based in Sewickley, Penn. and has a factory in Spokane, Wash. and this start-up, which launched with a Kickstarter project, looks to introduce its first products – the hardshell jacket and fleece – this winter.

The company will source fabrics and materials from U.S. mills, but more importantly each piece will be feature a hand-signed label by the person who made it in the Spokane factory. We look forward to hearing good things from this company, which has announced plans to bring out a full line of outerwear and clothing in 2013.
