Rack ‘Em Up Artfully

Sturdy bike racks are a necessary component to ensuring that people can ride their bikes to work, but aren’t the most pleasing things to look at. A new “artful” attempt to provide new racks, made of recycled cast iron might just change the way people see the racks.

Last week the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency along with the Yerba Buena Community Benefit District unveiled and installed its first recycled cast iron “artful bicycle racks.” These are the first of 250 to be placed in the Yerba Buena neighborhood, and are meant to help meet the growing demand for bicycle parking download. The racks have been paid for by local property owners, and are designed to give a little more style than the usual utilitarian bike racks.

Kanguru to Carry Kids on Bike and More

Transporting the young ones can be tricky, especially for those with active lives. This is where designer Oliver Klein’s award winning Kanguru might be the one to beat. This transformable baby carrier/bike seat, which is made almost entirely of recyclable materials that can be easily replaced should any wear out or break, won a Gold BraunPrize 2012 for “Genius Design for Everyday.” The Kanguru can even stand upright on the ground, thus serving a third purpose as well. Again, genius for everyday.

Holiday Gift Idea: Smart Looking Dumbbell

Having a barbell – also known as a dumbbell – around isn’t a dumb idea. Doing a little lifting during the day can keep arms toned up, help utilize muscles to reduce repetitive stress and reduce mental stress as well. But you don’t need to have an ugly weight lying around when you can have the Alias Barbell to lift. Designed by Philipp Starck this could make a nice paper weight for those times when it isn’t being lifted!

Minimalist Shoes Goes to Almost Nothing

Zero is essentially nothing, but the Xero Shoes, which were invented by Boulder, Colo. Resident Steven Sashen, are just slighting nothing more than nothing. These feature no laces, no upper at the toes and offer just a 6mm thin layer that protects the feet from the ground. It is like running barefoot but still having a layer between the foot and the ground.

Sashen reportedly based his designs on shoes worn by the Tarahumara, Native Americans who were renowned for their long distance running. The Tarahumara wore huaraches – a type of sandal that was likely made of a leather weave – but Sashen’s modern take features a rubber sole. It won’t add much cushion but it will be enough to keep your feet off the dirt. Video after the jump

Holiday Gift Idea: Branching Off

Plenty of companies make canoe and kayak paddles, but this holiday season consider the paddles from Bending Branches of Osceola, Wis. Their products have been made in the USA since the company was founded nearly 30 years ago. Bending Branches worked to revolutionize the paddle industry by introducing composite tips to canoe paddles and the company has been designing and creating some of the most innovative paddles ever sense.

The Rockgard proprietary technology, which is derived from the same material as inline skate wheels, will ensure that the integrity of paddle is maintained even after extensive use. This helps seal the paddle against moisture and protects the most vulnerable areas including the tips and edges, and the company claims this will help the paddles last six times longer.

Don’t find yourself up the creek without a paddle, find yourself up the creek with a Bending Branches paddle!

Napsack Wearable Sleeping Bag

We’ve seen a few wearable sleeping bags, including the Selk’Bag (one could allow wearers to look like a lifesize version of Gumby), but the latest twist on a wearable sleeping bag is the Poler’s Napsack, which is reportedly “part sleeping bag, part hoodie.” The big innovation here is the placement of zippers and kudos to the creators for taking a simple idea and creating something so unique. In this case the zipper at the bottom lets you get your feet out and since it cinches at the bottom you can wrap it around the knees and wear it like a smock. The zippers near the shoulders further let you pull out your arms. The result isn’t the most fashionable looking item but for camping and waking up in the morning before you can get a fire going it could be a welcome item to sleep in and wear.

Survival Knife for a Mountain Man

According to movies and TV mountain men were quite rugged individuals and the SK Mountain survival utility knife would probably be something that intrepid individual might want to carry. It is part of a collaboration between Camillus Knives and Survivorman series host and survival expert Les Stroud.

It features a 4 3/4 –inch long by 1/8-inch thick 440-stainless steel blade that offers a 3 ¾-inch cutting surface and one-inch long saw tooth blade. This makes for a handy knife for camping and general outdoor use, while the Carbonitride Titanium bonded drop tip blade is reinforced to survival serious use.

The handle is made of glass filled polypropylene, with visible green thermoplastic rubber inserts to make it easy to grip and easy to find should it end up on the ground. The knife features a large lanyard loop, and rugged steel pommel that can be used as a hammer in a pinch, while hard ballistic nylon automatic lock knife retaining sheath is like a second tool. It features a signal mirror mounted on the fold out compartment, which can also be used to hold small items like a sewing kit or matches, plus it offers an integral pull through blade sharpener, fire starter, miniature LED flashlight and signal whistle. There is also 10-feet of nylon cord that come on a built in wrap area behind the mirror and sharpener.

This might almost be too much knife for a mountain man!

Holiday Gift Idea: Bike Rack

This isn’t what we had in mind when someone suggested you could get a “bike rack,” but for the serious cyclist who has a bit of a silly streak consider having the handlebars mounted much like a hunting trophy. So instead of a rack of antlers Bicycle Taximdermy can “mount” those bars!

Blaze of Glory

We first heard about Blaze back in June of 2011. This handlebar-mounted laser cast a virtual bike in front of you to provide a signal to cars that you were in their blind spot. The system was developed by University of Brighton student Emily Brooke in the U.K. That was the last we heard of it, until now. In the nearly a year and a half that has passed Brooke has launched a company, developed a working prototype and launched a Kickstarter project to fund the creation of the first batch. Sunday Q&A: Making Sense of Golf Strokes

While most of us may never have a swing like the golf pros, today there are plenty of tools that can help improve the swing. In the old days it just meant endless practicing but today that practice can include a digital helper in the form of a wearable sensor on the glove.

The GolfSense provides real time response, and Jason Fass, CEO of GolfSense tells us how it can improve your swing. Continue reading Sunday Q&A: Making Sense of Golf Strokes

Chuck Taylor Made for Maine Weather

The ionic Converse Chuck Taylors aren’t as common on the basketball courts these days, but the shoes remain popular off the court for skaters and anyone who wants a shoe that could survive for seemingly ever. One thing the canvas shoes have never been so good in is snow and mud. But the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Made in Maine Boot looks as if it could endure just about anything. The only catch is that the company is releasing just 80 pair that will be made available at select Converse and First String retailers. However, we did note that Converse has a lot of other boot options ready for the holidays.

New Look for Beginning Cyclists

The very notion of clipping into bicycle pedals may seem crazy to those who haven’t tried it. While it can be easily – and quickly – mastered, trying it isn’t always for the faint of heart. But Look Cycle, which was one of the companies to pioneer clipless pedals, has introduced the Keo Flex.

These entry level clipless pedals are aimed specifically at beginners and casual cyclists. These use a one-piece composite body and retention level, which helps keep them light because beginners shouldn’t have to endure heavier pedals after all. Unlike higher-end models these feature no retention force adjustment however. Continue reading New Look for Beginning Cyclists
