Louis Garneau Sets Course

Louis Garneau has introduced its new Course 2LS Shoe with Boa Closure System for 2013. The Boa Closure system lets riders dial-in for a precise fit, and offers infinite degrees of fine-tuning with its duel reels. The Course 2LS also feature multi-vent intake air vents in the shoe to allow the shoes to truly breathe, while also offering interchangeable insoles – red for cooler weather to keep feet warm, and blue insoles for those warmer days to keep feet cool and dry.

The Course 2LS also has the power – or at least provides power transfer through its HRS-300 reinforced injection nylon that provides low coefficient of friction so the heel stays in place and less power is caused by slippage. The course is set for shoes to arrive this season.

Running Beacon

Glow-in-the-dark technology where you leave something under a bright light for a few minutes isn’t exactly new. But this technology, which has been popular with toys and children’s accessories, is now making its way to fitness apparel. New Balance is introducing the Beacon Jacket, which utilizes light-absorbing technology to add built-in visibility for runners who like to head out after the sun goes down. The new jackets were recently shown off at last month’s Outdoor Retailer Show, and will soon be lighting the night sky.

Made in America: POV Backpack

We’ve seen a number of action camera accessories that are designed to change the perspective, including a few wearable systems that change the view from first-person to third-person – putting the rider/runner/athlete in the shot.

The latest gizmo to entry this market is the VuPackPole, a POV/action camera backpack mount, which is now being developed by creator/designer Rodger Dean through a Kickstarter project. This pack is being designed and assembled in Alaska, and the frame is made using a CNC process from HPDE plastic, while the subsystem all and joint is made in Washington.

While this will allow wearer’s to be in the shot, the designers also noted that one problem with typical head-mounted systems is that the video can be shaky and hard to watch. By moving the camera to a pack it is more stable as well. According to Dean the joints will still give under pressure so no worries about getting caught up on branches! Video after the jump

Helmet Study to Include Hockey and Baseball

Much has been made about concussions and football helmets, but now the Virginia Tech – Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences is looking to expand its ground-breaking research to include hockey, baseball, softball and lacrosse. The five year plan will look to rate helmets worn in those sports and determine the ability the helmets have to lessen the likelihood of a concussion resulting from head impact.

The ratings for the helmets will begin with hockey in the fall of this year, followed by youth football in 2015, and then baseball, softball and lacrosse in 2016.

Reebok Looks to Go Off Road

Last summer Reebok introduced the striking Shark running shoes, which were quite unlike most shoes we’ve seen. Now Reebok is back with the ATV 19+, which takes the acronym with All-Terrain Vehicles. While these don’t have wheels they are ready to go off road and are designed with special lugs that provide independent suspension and offer a wide stable stance.

As the name suggests the shoes feature a total of 19 of these lugs, which are tipped with carbon rubber that is designed to go deep in loose dirt and help get you through the rough stuff. Video after the jump

Give It a SoloShot

We’ve seen a number of products – including poles and even a UAV aircraft – that can provide a different way to film the action with a rugged action camera. The latest twist is the SoloShot, a device holds the camera on a tripod and automatically records a person wearing a small GPS transmitter.

The robotic camera system can thus lock onto the wearer and provide an additional perspective that includes the ability to track or pan. Unfortunately this can’t tilt or zoom, nor does it allow the camera to be controlled remotely, but along with other options it could still be a great way to get that all so excellent long shot for a montage video! Hip to Be Square

Michelin has taken a cue from that old (and somewhat not so cool) Huey Lewis song “Hip to be Square,” but in this case square could be the new round. The Protek Max inner tubes, which we first heard about almost two years ago, feature a square profile and textured bumps that can help keep riders roller after a puncture.

These work along with a sealant and react in compression when punctured, and this reaction reportedly helps the tube close around any holes. The new tubes will be available this spring for around $13 and will be available for Presta and Schrader valves. How cool is that?

Cork Hat For the 21st Century

Back in Victorian times many soldiers and even civilians donned “pith helmets,” which were often not made of sola pith but rather cork. The material, which grows on trees in Spain and Portugal, is widely known for its use in corkboards and of course wine bottles.

But now Tilly Endurables, a Toronto-based hat maker, is utilizing a new material developed by Schoeller Texitle that comes from cork. And unlike the sun helmets of years ago, which used virgin cork, the Corkshell material is actually a byproduct from the production of wine corks. Just as cork was useful in protecting a wearer’s head from sun the Corkshell has the potential to provide 50 percent higher thermal insulation than other fabrics, plus it is soft and pliable. Floor It

Multipurpose rooms – such as those at schools and recreational centers – have a hard time hiding the fact that one purpose is a basketball court. Even if the hoop and backboard can be moved you’re still essentially stuck with the lines on the floor. But now the ASB GlassFloor system could revolutionize this, as it offers lighted lines that are only there when you need it.

The floor is made of glass, ceramic and aluminum – so not exactly the wood floors that we’ve come to know and love/loathe – but this material allows LED lights to be installed as marking lines, and thus make it easy for a floor to change from basketball to volleyball to floor hockey without piling on the lines. And unlike the use of tape for line markers there is no worry about someone tripping on the lighted lines.

Outdoor Retail Show 2013: Tent City

The Barebones Safari Tent doesn’t look barebones to us. In fact this tent offers 120 square feet of floor space and can sleep up to eight people. It features aluminum frame that can anchor to multiple surfaces including concrete, wood or dirt. It is constructed of a water- and UV-resistant Cordura shell that can stand up to year round weather exposure. Additional wall panels are also sold separately and this tent design offers expandable floor panesl for those who might wish to consider a tent city.
