Knife Time: Swiss Army and Helle Blades Arrive

Whether out hiking, camping, hunting or just spending a day in nature it isn’t a bad idea to have a good blade. This week we actually saw two!

First up is the L.L. Bean 100th Anniversary Swiss Army Knife, which likely is rugged enough to survive until the company’s bicentennial in 2112! It was made in partnership with Swiss Army Knife maker Wenger with reclaimed walnut wood that makes each model truly unique. In addition to the blade this knife offers a bottle opener, wire bender, nail file, nail cleaner, corkscrew, can opener, Philips screwdriver, mini-key ring and awl. Video after the jump

Interbike: WD-40 Introduces BIKE Line

For years many shop mechanics have said to keep WD-40 away from the bikes. While WD-40 is good for solving a squeaky hinge or for helping loosen a rusty nut, the lubricant wasn’t really meant for a bicycle chain. But now WD-40 has announced the launch a new subsidiary business unit that is focused exclusively on cycling-specific maintenance products.

WD-40 BIKE will offer a range of products designed for bikes including wet and dry chain lubricants, a heavy-duty degreaser, a foaming bike wash and a frame protectant. These products were developed over a year with collaboration between the team at WD-40, professional bike mechanics and independent bike retailers. Tuf Enough Racks

There are bike racks that are tough and then there is Tuf Racks. These are for those who seriously want to ensure that the bike will make it to the ride. The Tuf Rack Indestructible Car Bike Rack looks like it could live up to the name.

It is made of MIG welded laser-cut 16-gauge steel that will protect the bike on the trip to the trails. It is power coated to look good too, and offers industrial-grade ratchet straps that are rated to 500pounds. About the only thing required is that the racks, which are designed for BMX ($169.99) and mountain bikes ($199.99), be mounted to a truck or SUV.

How Are You Fixed for Baladeo?

If you’re heading off into the wilds chances are you might not always want to eat with your hands, but don’t have space for a lot of utensils. The Baladeo Eco133 will solve that problem, as it folds up into a compact pocket knife-sized package but opens up into an individual knife and spork. This seems more ideal than eating with a bulky Swiss Army knife any day and allows for a semi-civilized attempt at eating.

In addition to the knife and spork tools provide a can opener and bottle opener, and are made of lightweight stainless steel to reduce bulk.

Polar Leads the Way With Integrated GPS

Heart rate monitors are great for keeping track of heart rate (obviously), time and calories burned. Some have added GPS as an add-on function, but now Polar takes it a step further by offering fully integrated GPS within the device. The Polar RC3 GPS is aimed at runners and cyclists who want a light weight heart rate monitor.

The water resister (IPX7) device offer GPS functionality for distance and speed recording without the need for an extra sensor. It features route mapping and a “back to start” option so you don’t need about worrying about how to get back home! Continue reading Polar Leads the Way With Integrated GPS

Surly Chews the Fat Tire Bike

Last year at Interbike we were able to try out some of Surly’s new snowbikes including the Pugsley and the Moonlander. These bikes of course don’t have to stay in the garage until the white stuff falls, and they work well in sand and mud as well.

But now Surly is coming out with a fat-bike that is meant for the trail as well. The Krampus is a fat tire mountain bike that offers three-inch wide tires but is actually a 29er that can handle singletrack at speed. Unlike the Pugsley, which requires special hubs, cranks, rims and other parts, the Krampus is compatible with most mountain bike parts. Continue reading Surly Chews the Fat Tire Bike

Sunday Q&A: Rocktape Talks Tape

You probably saw it during the Olympics: the brightly colored tape peaking out from underneath athlete’s uniforms. This tape has nothing to do with injury but rather is a legal way to enhance performance by increasing blood flow and helping to engage certain muscle groups during competition and recovery.

Rocktape president and founder Greg Van Den Dries answered what the tape means for today’s athletes. Continue reading Sunday Q&A: Rocktape Talks Tape

Barefoot Golfing?

Adidas has introduced a variety of new shoes this year – and now two different trends have apparently merged. Adidas has made inroads in the minimalist shoe category and has been active with a variety of golf shoes. Now the Puremotion golf shoes deliver that lightweight and minimal feel for the fairway. These shoes are waterproof and flexible, and come with a 90 day comfort guarantee.

Since most courses probably won’t let you golf barefoot this might just be the next best thing.

Riddell Reinvents the Football Helmet

As summer draws to a close it means football season is around the corner and this year many players will be donning a very new helmet. For the 2012 season Riddell introduced its new 360, the latest in a long line of next generation football helmets.

The 360 might not be technically “the helmet of the future,” but it could be the starting point at where the future will begin. The helmet has been tested against 1.4 million impacts but yet it isn’t actually guaranteed to prevent concussions – at least not yet. The new 360 tries to reduce the amount of movement the helmet has on the wearer’s head, and to accomplish this Riddell has installed an “occipital lock” that can keep the helmet firm and stable on the wearer’s head. Ecoxpower Brings the Gear

We’ve seen a new trend this year with bicycle hub-attachments that power lights and more. Earlier this month we noted the BikeCharge Dynamo and now rugged outdoor and waterproof lifestyle product maker Ecoxgear by Grace Digital has introduced the Ecoxpower pedal powered headlight and smartphone charger.

This nifty gizmo attaches to most standard and oversized hubs, which is what the Dynamo and other devices do, but the Ecoxpower takes it a step further by providing handlebar mounted, water-resistant yet touch-screen compatible phone/GPS case. This solves the problem of worrying about that expensive device while riding home in the rain. Continue reading Ecoxpower Brings the Gear

Pint Sized Road Bikes for Young Riders

Kids and bicycles go together about as well as anything. Childhood is when many future racers fall in love with bikes, but yet most kids are left with BMX or mountain bike style bikes these days. There are few road bikes – even of the old “10-speed” variety for the tween set.

But Culprit saw a need and introduced a line of road bikes in sizes meant for children. Josh Colp, the founder of Culprit, was asked why there weren’t actual race-worthy bike for kids so he set out to build some. The result is the Junior One and 650 Junior Two, which are made of double butted 7005-series alloy with smoothed out welds. The bikes almost look like carbon fiber – but we figure the kids need to prove they can take care of their bikes before moving up to the big leagues.
