Cavalry Charge

Cavalry-7x50Call out the cavalry! Or at least head out with the Celestron Cavalry 7×50 Binoculars with GPS, which feature (as the name implies) integrated GPS, as well as a digital compass and reticle. This can help you determine the direction and distance of objects.

These would be ready for a cavalry charge thanks to the rubber armored exterior and waterproof construction. Nitrogen purging prevents lens got, while the olive drab color just has that cool military look. These provide a wide view of view, and there is even a built-in LCD screen that provides data on coordinates, altitude, and a compass readout.

Avalanche App

Galileo-LawinenFonLast October the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) warned against relying on a smartphone as an avalanche transceiver. As we noted in our reports one of the problems with apps is that these tended to rely too much on the phones power to transmit. However, the Galileo-LawinenFon system that was developed by researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) appears to have resolved some of those issues. This could provide greater accuracy for rescuers as users don’t rely just on the wireless technology of a handset. Instead the researchers have created a piece of hardware called the Galileo-SmartLVS, which connects to the phone via USB, and could better turn a handset into an avalanche transceiver.

“Like commonly available avalanche transceivers, the Galileo-LawinenFon has a transmit and search mode,” said Holger Schulz, a scientist at Fraunhofer IML. “Unlike previous transceivers however, when looking for victims the system is not restricted to the electromagnetic field formed by a transmitted signal but makes use of satellite signals as well. Since our solution draws on numerous available sensors and satellite systems, the signals transmitted by victims can be located with a great deal of precision. Magnetic field signals are processed in 3D so that we can pinpoint accident victims in a matter of seconds and improve their chances of survival.”

While still in prototype this could be welcome news for those who head out in ski country and worry about avalanches.

The Speed Play

Speed-Up-BagIf you commute by bike there is only so much stuff you can stuff in a bag. The Speed Up Bag could provide a bit more storage, but unlike other bags this one is mounted to the bike. Slovenian inventor Joze Petkovsek also claims that this is the most aerodynamic cycling bag around.

It is designed to mount on the handlebars and it provides less air resistance to the rider, less drag coefficient than standard bags and that all means higher cycling speeds. This bag is also waterproof so the contents inside can stay draw during the ride. The developers are looking to an Indiegogo campaign to get the Speed Up Bag up to speed and ready for launch. Boxing Gambling: How does Fury get fighting fit?

Tyson-FuryIn the boxing world, the upcoming clash between Tyson Fury and Joey Abell will be one of the most one sided fights of the year, that’s if you believe the bookies. Fury is the bookmakers’ favorite, with some placing him at 1/20 for the win. But how does Fury get himself to the top of his game before a big fight? Does his training regime make him the formidable favorite? Continue reading Boxing Gambling: How does Fury get fighting fit?

The Painted Edge

BobsledMuch is being made about the technology that is helping the U.S. Bobsled & Skeleton Federation at this year’s Winter Olympic Games in Sochi Russia. The BMW designed sleds have also gotten a boost from the paint!

The national teams are using AERAO Advanced Paint Technology, a film-based paint currently in use on high-performance professional racecars and commercial jetliners, and it is being employed on all team competition vehicles – including the two-man bobsleds.

AERO is a disruptive, green technology paint applique system, created and applied without solvents or sprayers, eliminating the fumes and environmental impact of harsh chemicals.

“In our sport, every hundredth of a second counts,” said USBSF CEO Darrin Steele. “We went with AERO paint because it is lighter and more durable than other materials we’ve used. This allows us to shave fractions of a second over the mile-long course and provide a competitive advantage to our teams.”

Infinity Plus One

InfinityWhen we think of the concept of infinity we think of more or at least endless, but the Infinity bicycle saddle is actually about less – or maybe it is more because it is less? We’re really confused on this one, but designer Dr. Vincent Marcel basically reinvented the saddle by inverting it. So instead of a convex shape to sit on he created a concave shape that has the bones rest inside the cutout with support on the muscles.

We first spotted the Infinity last fall when Marcel launched his Kickstarter campaign. He ended up with 1,330 backers and surpassed his $25,000 goal and then some. In the end he raised $188,340 to make the Infinity a reality. Now that it is a success he seems ready to get in production.

We’ve seen other saddles that look to do more with less, so we’ll be watching to see where this Infinity concept goes next. It could be nowhere it could be to infinity… you know the rest.

Under Performaning

Shani-DavisThe Under Armour designed speed skating uniforms were supposed to be super suits – there was already talk of a potential ban as the suits could give an unfair edge to the competitors. However, as The Wall Street Journal reported late last week – the super suits were a super dud!

Gold medal favorite Shani Davis didn’t show super speed on the ice and the paper reported that the suits may have a design flaw that could be slowing down skaters. This is the vent on the back, which is designed to allow heat to escape. Instead it is allow air to enter and is creating drag, which in turn is making it difficult for the skaters to maintain their low position.

Audio Gets in Focus

YurbudsMusic and working out just go so well together, but having earbuds that can go the distance has often been the problem. Earbuds that fall out of the ears are worse than no headphones at all. The Yurbud Focus will still in place thanks to Twist Lock silicone ear plugs while the over-the-ear mount will let you run, jump and more without fear. These also provide freedom as they can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth to portable music players, meaning you need to worry about let cable.

These are also resistant to sweat and light rain, and have about eight-hours of battery life, while the fabric cord will help ensure they don’t get all tangled up.

Full Kontact

KontactKontact has been made… for cyclists. The Kontact saddle works on the theory that providing a flat surface to sit on actually prevents the center of the seat from pushing up in between the “sit bones,” which in turn causes increased pressure. Kontact claims by providing a flat surface there is more contact area that reduces the pressure. The company is so sure of its results that it is offering a 30 day 100 percent refund policy on saddles.
