Apple said it sold over 5 million iPhone 5 handsets in the first weekend. This means 5 million people (and that number keeps on rising) have a new phone and need a way to protect it. A few of you are probably taking those iPhone 5s out with you when you’re running, biking, or taking part in any number of activities that put the phone at risk of dropping on unforgiving cement. Apple Releases BikeGearsFree
With all the iPhone 5 news last week, a few Apple announcements and releases got buried. The iPod touch and iPod nano announcements got not quite as much press as the new phone. But one thing that slipped into iTunes (a new iTunes) without much notice was BikeGearsFree. The app lets you calculate cadence and miles per hour based on the size of your chainring and sprocket. Continue reading Apple Releases BikeGearsFree

Interbike: Cardo Systems BK-1 Demos in the Desert
We first heard about Cardo Systems and their BK-1 helmet-mounted communications and entertainment system for cyclists back in March. The system lets cyclists – or anyone – communicate via Bluetooth for up to a 1,600 foot range. That means those conversations on the road can happen even when cyclists are single-file, or not one right behind the other. Continue reading Interbike: Cardo Systems BK-1 Demos in the Desert
Interbike: Put a (Foot)Brake on It
Bicycle shoes are great for riding a bike. Clipping into the pedals provides better use of the pedal stroke, and actually helps make for a more stable ride. But walking around in cycling shoes is hardly fun. And sometimes after a long time on the bike it is nice to get out of the shoes. Of course bare feet aren’t going to work but the Footbrake will have you covered. This is a foldable sandal like shoe that can tuck in a cycling jersey pocket and be there when you need it.
Sounds like a plan to us!

LYCRA Talks Three Tiers of its Stretch Fabric
LYCRA has been around since 1958. Since then we’ve had time to see what a revolutionary material it is. The company that owns LYCRA just developed a three-tiered system for its fabrics: LYCRA SPORT, LYCRA SPORT BEAUTY and LYCRA SPORT ENERGY.
LYCRA SPORT is a fabric for active performance. LYCRA SPORT BEAUTY is a fabric that combines performance with beauty and style. LYCRA says this tier is for “looking in shape while getting in shape.” LYCRA SPORT ENERGY fabric is innovated for compression fabrics. This top tier will be used in high-intensity and high-energy-sports garments. We bet we’ll see this label on a lot of cycling and running shorts as more and more of that is getting the benefit of compression. Continue reading LYCRA Talks Three Tiers of its Stretch Fabric
