Enve Releases Carbon Fiber All Mountain Tubeless Rims

Those looking for the tubeless ride off road are in luck. While tubeless compatibility was once an exception to the rule off road, bike parts manufacturer Enve has stayed true to its goal. The company released the first mountain clinchers in 2006, and brought out the first full carbon fiber mountain clincher in 2008. Enve has now had several years to tweak the product as the clincher wheel has gained popularity. The latest is one to get up early for, the Enve AM.

Enve uses a proprietary manufacturing process to produce the Enve AM. It involves targeted laminate and a purpose-driven design. The rim is 30 mm deep and features a 24 mm width between the hook beds, which works for tires between 2.2-2.4-inches wide. Several structural modifications give the AM clinchers better ride performance and strength without adding weight.

The new tubeless compatible Enve AM rims are available in both 26- and 29-inch models and in hole counts of both 28 and 32 holes. A set will retail for $860 with pre-built wheelsets on DT Swiss or Chris King hubs start at $2400.

Dave Zabriskie, the New Voice of Navigation

httpv://youtu.be/7AfwI_g-IFc

The headline may be a bit of an overstatement, but Dave Zabriskie recently had a recording session with Garmin Cervelo team sponsor Garmin to lend his voice to the downloadable Team Garmin bundle for Garmin Nuvi devices.

Zabriskie’s voice will be available as part of the downloadable Team Garmin bundle from Garmin Garage later in November. The video lets you hear, and see, some of what’s included in the bundle. “I’ll turn this car around…”

Nuvi devices are for cars, motorcycles and trucks, and not bicycles, but we thought it was worthy when a pro-cyclist gets to provide his voice for GPS driving directions. Besides, who knows the road better than a cyclist?

Hands On: SmartyPants Gummy Vitamins for Grownups

It’s after breakfast. I just opened a pack of gummy candies and ate five. Would you believe it if I told you I just had my daily recommendation for vitamins and minerals? It’s not what I had for breakfast. The gummy candies are SmartyPants Gummy Vitamins for Grownups.

SmartyPants is known for the gummy vitamins they make for kids. Now they’re available in grownup portions. The multivitamin includes Omega 3 and Vitamin D. Among the other vitamins are 100 percent daily-recommended values for vitamin C, vitamin D (150 percent), vitamin E, folic acid, vitamin B-12 (1667 percent), and iodine. Clocking in under 100 percent are daily sources of vitamin A, thiamin and zinc. The supplements also include Omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, though these are not rated for daily consumption despite studies that show their benefits. WingmanHD Video Camera Catches the Action

Athletes are capturing some amazing video. Biking on the trails; catching waves; skating some big tricks. Capturing the action while in motion, rather than filming when a friend rides by from a stationary position, adds to the authenticity of the video. It also requires some specialized equipment. That doesn’t mean, however, that you need to spend a lot of money, or have a film degree, to pull off some amazing video.

Delkin Devices just released the WingmanHD, a waterproof, 3-ounce action camera. The company claims the HD camera capable of shooting 1080p video is the lightest on the market at 3-ounces. The comparable Contour HD helmet camera weighs 4.3 ounces, as listed on Amazon.com. The weight for the newly released GoPro HD Hero2 camera was difficult to find.

The WingmanHD is powerful with a 1.5-inch LCD screen; 3x digital zoom and universal mounting system. The screen allows you to view what the action (if the camera is positioned where you can see it) and also has a playback mode so you can review video even before you get back to your computer. The camera comes with an 8 GB MicroSD Memory Card, rechargeable battery that provides 2.5 hours of recording time, a helmet mount, vented helmet mount, bar mount, wall and auto charger, a pwer and data USB cable, component cable, wrist strap and user guide. In November Nike plans to introduce the Nike Zoom KDIV Nerf Edition as part of the Kevin Durant line of Nike shoes. When Nike says Nerf, it means it. Highlights of green in the sole and trim top the shoes off in an eye-catching package.

Garmin Enters ANT+ Community with Garmin Fit App, Adapter

Garmin excels in the sports and fitness category with devices that track distance, speed, heart rate and other measures of a workout. Now it’s come to market with an ANT+ adapter for the iPhone, and companion app on iPhone and Android devices. We hope the Android adapter will soon follow so we can track our workouts on our device of choice.

The Garmin Fit app lets users track metrics such as speed, pace, distance, time, calories, heart rate and cadence. Some of these metrics require connectivity to devices beyond the phone. Cadence and heart rate, for instance, require a pod on the bike and chest strap, respectively. These are measured with companion Garmin devices, and sent wirelessly via the ANT+ adapter to the iPhone. Continue reading Garmin Enters ANT+ Community with Garmin Fit App, Adapter

Velocomp iBike Coach Pushes Riders

Gone are the days of the cycling computer with one or two buttons that cycle through speed, distance, cadence and limited readings. The smartphone is the perfect venue for the cycle computer, with the appropriate app. It’s got a nice big screen, and connectivity offers real-time maps and location data along with those stats of speed, distance and time on the bike.

Velocomp just introduced its iBike Coach for the iPhone. It’s a handlebar-mountable case that holds the iPhone and protects it from water and other damage. The case encloses the phone and protects it in the event of a crash or other blunt force.

Nike Soccer Shoe Laser Strike

httpv://youtu.be/cHLVsEO84oA

Nike just released its Nike T90 Laser IV soccer shoe. The “football” shoe is 20 percent lighter than the previous version. It features a streamlined silhouette that provides enhanced fit and lets wearers feel the ball. The forefoot area has a newly configured adaptive shield design that works with the foot’s natural motion to boost performance. Constructed from high performance synthetic leather, the upper provides a soft and close-to-the-foot fit. On the sole, a new stud design enhances speed and movement, without added weight or pressure.

To coincide with the launch, Nike Football created the T90 Strike Counter on Facebook. This app allows users to log their goals, and recreate the action in a 3D image. Report the spot on the pitch from where a goal was scored; where in the goal the ball went, and what part of the boot (shoe) was struck the ball. The data render a 3D image that can be shared with friends. Participants can also check out the 3D image and input from pro football players.

Louis Garneau Intros Carve Helmet

Each year helmets get lighter, but they also get stronger. Technology lends itself to a higher degree of protection using lighter-weight materials. However, even when you’re going to get down and dirty off road you’ll still want to look good doing so. For 2012 Louis Garneau will release the Carve helmet, which will offer that higher degree of protection without sacrificing style.  This new helmet promises to be lightweight, highly ventilated and totally geared toward mountain bikers.

Sportiiiis Gives Visual Feedback to Workout Stats

One of the drawbacks of adding a heart rate monitor, cycling computer and other devices to your workout is that you have to take your focus from the road ahead. With a heart rate monitor, you have to look at the watch for heart rate, calories and time. A separate cycling computer requires you to look at the screen by your handlebars to find out your speed, cadence and other measures.
