RunPhones, Music to Cold Weather Runner’s Ears

Music is essential in most workouts. Yet there can be a danger with headphones that block traffic and other noises. Headphones can also be a nuisance when they bounce on your ears or earbuds that don’t stay in your ears. There are a few headband-style headphones, and now AccousticSheep has come out with RunPhones, a headband with removable earphones built into the fabric.

The headband is made from a soft, wicking, washable mesh or fleece. The speakers are removable to make it possible to wash the band, or change it with another color or style to match your outfit. The benefit of the RunPhones is that the speakers allow you to listen to music and still hear ambient noise. So if a car approaches, or someone calls out to you, you’re better able to hear it and your music. The inability to hear ambient noise is one reason we typically don’t recommend biking or rollerblading with headphones. However these are worth trying on less-trafficked rides.

The headband is made using Polartec technology to give properties such as wicking, breathability, durability, and a lightweight feel. The fall and winter is the perfect time to introduce these as they work well as ear warmers. Though there is a summer version, it remains to be seen whether they will be a good option for the hottest days.

RunPhones are made by AccousticSheep, the makers of SleepPhones. SleepPhones are similar in concept, and let you listen to music or other audio programming when laying down and falling asleep. The removable speakers are thin and flexible enough to cover your ears but not interfere with the comfort when your head hits the pillow.
