Every year we see many stories of bike giveaway programs and we still find the Bike Lady to be among the most touching. Ohio resident Kate Koch Gatch – a.k.a. the Bike Lady – has been helping get bikes to children in need for the holidays. She works with inmates at the Pickaway Correctional Institution, where they assemble the bikes, which are then provided to children.
We’re happy to report that a semi-trailer loaded with 510 sets of tires, pedals, brakes and gears left Huffy’s California distribution center last earlier this month, and has arrived Pickaway Correctional Institution, where the first wave of assembly. Kudos to Ms. Gatch – the Bike Lady – for helping deliver so many bikes under the trees.

Thrilled to report that we’re up to 1,052 NEW bikes, helmets and locks being spread across 16 Ohio county child protective services offices or the 2013 holiday season and for 1,052 foster kids. One final purchase will be made via a retail establishment and the expected year-end total will top 1,100. That will bring a grand total over six years of roughly 3,500 new bikes for Ohio foster kids …until we go at it again next year! Friends of the Bike Lady know how to roll!
