Weekend Reading List (05.18.2013): Home Fitness, Training Surfaces, Board Ban

Home Fitness

JF-Kit-House

From Giz Mag: JF-Kit House makes you pedal for your breakfast
The JF-Kit House, by Spanish-based Elii Architecture, is an off-grid home concept which envisions occupants using exercise to offset their energy needs. To its credit, Elii Architecture makes it clear right off the bat that the JF-Kit House isn’t intended to be considered as suitable for human habitation yet. Rather, the architects did some brainstorming and imagined how our homes may evolve in a future of rapidly decreasing fossil-fuel resources. This was then used this as a jumping-off point to let imaginations run wild.

Training Surfaces

From Runner’s World: Train on Different Surfaces to Avoid Injury and Boost Performance
Most runners log their miles on neighborhood streets. But roads shouldn’t be your only training ground. “Running on different surfaces changes up the scenery, workout, and effort, giving road runners an often-needed break,” says Jennifer Novak, a running and multisport coach at Kona Fitness in New Orleans. A change of venue can also keep you healthier and boost your fitness. Running once or twice a week on grass, sand, or trails, or even in the pool, reduces pounding on your legs, which minimizes injury risk. And pushing off on softer surfaces engages and strengthens more muscles, which can translate into faster times on the road, says Novak. Here’s how to adapt your workout to whatever lies beneath.

Board Ban
