The fitness tracking device category is full of endless possibilities. The new band from BASIS, which we wrote about back in January when they showed at CES, was just released this week. The wrist-based health tracker works as an online personal dashboard that shows all your activity so you can adjust your levels by adding more walking, running or other activities.
The band is a multi-sensor device and free web service that helps measure activity, and evaluate your sleep to help you improve those zzz’s.
BASIS is intended to simplify activity tracking and help encourage users to reach their goals. The program adjusts to days when you can’t get in your usual amount of activity, and offers rewards to users who do reach their goals.
“Every year, in their quest to become healthier, millions of people join a gym, start a new health program or download a fitness app,” said Jef Holove, CEO of Basis. “Often these approaches are too rigid to accommodate life’s ups and downs, require us to log our lives manually, or can be too time-consuming to fit into our busy schedules. Basis solves these problems to help people build lasting healthy habits.”
Activity is measured by several sensors built into the device. An optical blood flow monitor uses light-based sensing to see blood flow and capture heart rate patterns. A 3-axis accelerometer detects the body’s movements and measures activity levels and sleep quality. A perspiration sensor helps track the intensity of activity by measuring sweat leves. Skin and ambient temperature sensors measure heat dissipation and ambient effects.
The BASIS tracking monitor is available for $199, and comes with a free web subscription for tracking activity and viewing progress online.
