Those California Raisins are putting themselves back in the spotlight, or sunlight. A new study finds that raisins are as effective as sports chews for fueling workouts. Researchers at the University of California-Davis conducted the study, which was published in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition.
The study evaluated the effects that natural versus commercial carbohydrate supplements have on endurance running performance. The findings showed similar results between the two. Thos that consumed raisins or sports chews ran the 5K on average on minute faster than those that only consumed water. Eating raisings and sports chews promoted higher carbohydrate oxidation compared to water only.
“Raisins are the great alternative to sport chews as they also provide fiber and micronutrients, such as potassium and iron, and they do not have any added sugar, artificial flavor or colors,” said James Painter, PhD., R.D. and nutrition research advisor for the California Raisin Marketing Board. “As an added bonus, raisins are the most economical dried fruit according to the United States Department of Agriculture, so they are cost effective and convenient for use during exercise.”
A recent post on TheKitchn.com suggests making sports drinks by soaking dried fruits in water. So whether you eat raisins or make a raisin-water drink, you can fuel your workout with nature’s energy chews. There’s recipes and suggestions at the California Raisin Marketing Board website.
