Smart Phones Creating Digital Divide Amongst Gym Members, Users Claim Essential Workout Tool

Cell phone usage is frowned upon by many gym goers, and it’s even banned in certain gyms. Besides the annoyance of constant chatter, there’s also a privacy concern when it involves cell phones with cameras and areas like a locker room. However, a recent blog post by a fitness industry expert shows that the use of smart phones is on the rise, and creating a bit of a dilemma for gym owners.

A piece by Bryan O’Rourke references a survey by marketing firm Lab42 that found more consumers are using smart phones to stay connected while exercising. Out of 500 “social media users” Lab42 surveyed about their health and fitness, 51 percent responded that they use a smart phone during exercise. With the advanced functions, smart phone users are doing more than gabbing; the survey found that, while working out, users are checking e-mail (33 percent), listening to music (91 percent), and tracking their workout progress and food regimen (33 percent) with specialized apps (31 percent do so through websites). They are also sharing their progress with others (75 percent, with Facebook being the most popular), while 74 percent said they believe technology has made a positive impact on their weight loss plans and 72 percent said their motivation has increased.

So, what’s the issue? Cell phones and smart phones are dividing members into two groups, according to a New York Times article—those who use phones in the gym and those who abhor them. The phone users see their portable devices as essential workout tools (as evidenced by the Lab42 survey), but the increase in phone usage could also be attributed to younger members who are always connected, according to O’Rourke.

While it’s hard to measure the accuracy of the study based on only 500 respondents, anyone who steps foot inside a gym knows that smart phone usage is obvious; nearly everyone—young and old—who works out at our gym has a smart phone easily accessible. Whether we like them or not, smart phones are becoming a part of everyone’s workout.
