Runners Clock in With Chip Timing in 2012 Triple Crown of Running Series

The starting gun isn’t the only measure of time in this year’s Triple Crown of Running Series taking place this season around Colorado. Chip Timing, a form of racing timing systems using RFID, will keep time for each athlete in the competition.

The Triple Crown of Running Series includes Pikes Peak Marathon, Pikes Peak Ascent, Garden of the Gods ten mile run and Summer Roundup Trail Run. For each of the races there will be a gun time and chip time given for race results. Chip time will be taken when runners cross the mat at the start and finish lines of each race. The Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon will include another set of mats for the A-Frame (three miles from the summit), and the summit. This way runners can tell how quickly they ran up to the peak.

The use of chip timing illuminates error and allows for instant and accurate results as participants complete the race. It’s likely the numbers given to each runner will have an RFID chip inserted in the paper to track each runner.
