New bike owners are getting their money back from California bike shop the Santa Monica Mountains Cyclery. That is anyone buying a qualifying bike – most bikes $750 and up – will earn $0.10 per mile for every mile ridden and logged on Strava.com in 2012.
“We know that many people out there want to improve their fitness and maybe lose a few pounds, and we just want to give them a little nudge in the right direction,” says David Kooi, owner of SMMC.
The pledge will pay out twice during the year, where participants will receive gift cards for the miles they’ve ridden. “A simple training plan that consists of three rides per week averaging 20 miles per ride will reward the customer with more than $300 for the year,” says Kooi. That’s approaching 50 percent of the purchase price of the bike.
Rides are logged through Strava.com, which works as an app on Android, iPhone and certain GPS platforms. The app adds a social element where users can friend each other and view the miles they’ve ridden, as well as challenge friends to put on more miles or go on particular rides. SMMC will track participating user’s rides by creating a group for those users to join.
This is a program that encourages regular activity, weight loss and fitness. The offer is good for those who purchase qualifying bikes by January 22.
