A Kayak to Stand On

Kayaks may just be one of the most maneuverable and quiet water crafts on the market today. They are fairly easy to transport, very low maintenance and are fairly inexpensive to purchase when compared to other watercraft options. Recreational paddling of open and whitewater has been the primary use of modern kayaks for decades, but there are more kayaks being designed and produced for the anglers out there. Just recently, Jackson Kayak of Spartan, Tennessee has brought to market the Cuda, a boat specifically designed for the open fresh and salt water fisherman in mind.

The Cuda has similar features to other open water, sit-on-top kayaks that are already on the market – a comfortable seat, tie downs, rotational modeled plastic construction, v-shaped hull, a optional rudder, tank wells and of course, a beverage holder. But the feature that should excite most fisherman, and even those who just like to paddle open water, is how stable the Cuda appears to be. Whether the paddler is sitting in the seat, with their legs over the side or even while standing on the kayak, the Cuda has been designed in such a way to not tip over.

While the question remains, why would anyone want to stand on a kayak? There are those who might. Fishing in marshy areas, brush or even open water, being able to stand allows the fisherman to cast in a more controlled and comfortable manner. Plus when they land the ‘big one’, reeling a fish in can be much easier while standing. For the non-anglers, the stability that the Cuda provides can help put a kayaker at ease when a power boat goes flying by.

The Cuda starts at $1199 and goes up to $1399 if the optional rudder is added. It is available in eight different colors and custom color options are available starting at $200 above the base prices. They are fairly large boats with the length measuring 14.3-feet and a dry weight of 74-pounds. The carrying capacity is 400-pounds, so if you are on the heavier end of the scale, you’ll need to get plenty of paddling before you can carry more gear. Landing a real, full-size barracuda while fishing from a kayak might not seem like a good idea, but if you did hook ‘a big one’, the Jackson Kayak Cuda might just be stable enough to help you reel one in.
